Liver laceration in an intercollegiate football player.

Serious abdominal injuries in athletics, including liver trauma, are relatively rare. When they do occur, the athletic trainer and the team physician must be able to recognize the signs and symptoms and employ the appropriate first aid and follow-up care. In this paper, we present a case study of a football player who suffered a lacerated liver as a result of a forceful blow to the right side of the chest. Although his case was typical of most isolated liver injuries and he did not experience massive internal bleeding, the potential for life-threatening exsanguination exists and must be recogn

Gait in male trans-tibial amputees: a comparative study with healthy subjects in relation to walking speed.

Walking speed, stance duration and ground reaction forces were studied with the use of a stable force platform (Kistler) in 24 male transtibial amputees and 12 healthy subjects matched for sex and age. The aim of the study was to compare the gait performance of two groups with unilateral trans-tibial amputations for either vascular disease or trauma and also to compare the results of the two groups with the results of a group of healthy subjects. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to compare the stance duration and the ground reaction forces in relation to walking speed. The vascular

Therapies for radiation injuries: research perspectives.

Exposure to radiation damages the immune, hematopoietic, and gastrointestinal components of the host defense system. This may lead to serious endogenous or exogenous infections. When radiation injury is combined with other physical trauma, e.g., burn or wound, the resulting damage to these systems is synergistic, and treatment for infection requires multiple approaches. This paper reviews successful single and combined therapeutic modalities for infections in irradiated mice and irradiated mice inflicted with trauma that are currently conducted at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institu

Minimal invasive treatment of proximal femur fractures with the long gamma nail: indication, technique, results.

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of complex unstable proximal femur fractures from the trochanteric region to the middle shaft area is difficult and often highly invasive, especially in older patients with osteoporotic bones. METHODS: In 1993, we began to treat all unstable proximal femur fractures from the trochanteric region to the middle third of the shaft with the long gamma nail (LGN) and allowed the patients immediate full weightbearing after surgery. Perioperative, postoperative, and follow-up data were analyzed. RESULTS: During a 3-year period, we treated 37 patients with unstable

Prehospital care, importance of early intervention on outcome.

The improvement of rescue systems and on-scene therapy has lead to a significant reduction of early posttraumatic death. It was the goal of this study to critically analyse the value of prehospital care in respect to early but also to delayed complications (single = SOF or multiple organ failure = MOF) In a retrospective analysis 1223 polytraumatized patients treated during 1984 and 1994, with an injury severity of more than 20 points according to the Injury Severity Score = ISS, on-scene therapy ("field stabilization") was evaluated. We could show that a sufficient preclinical airway manageme

A microtransplantation approach for cell suspension grafting in the rat Parkinson model: a detailed account of the methodology.

Shortcomings of current techniques used for the intracerebral transplantation of ventral mesencephalic dopamine neurons include low graft survival, high variability, considerable implantation trauma and suboptimal graft integration. In order to overcome these limitations, we have adopted a microtransplantation approach which allows precise and reproducible implantation of ventral mesencephalon cell suspensions at single or multiple sites with minimal trauma and improved survival and integration of the grafted neurons [Nikkhah et al. (1994) Brain Res. 633, 133-143]. The present study was undert

Pathological fracture following minimal trauma as the initial presentation of parathyroid carcinoma-associated hyperparathyroidism in a young man: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignant endocrine tumor, accounting for approximately 0.005% of all malignancies and representing an uncommon cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone leads to severe hypercalcemia, resulting in multisystem complications, including skeletal fragility, nephrolithiasis, neuromuscular manifestations, and cardiovascular and neurocognitive disturbances. Preoperative diagnosis remains challenging, as PC frequently mimics benign parathyroid disease both clinically and radiologically. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-ye

Clinical, Genomic, and Neurophysiological Correlates of Lifetime Suicide Attempts among Individuals with an Alcohol Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Research has identified multiple risk factors associated with suicide attempt (SA) among individuals with psychiatric illness. However, there is limited research among those with an alcohol use disorder (AUD), despite their disproportionately higher rates of SA. METHODS: We examined lifetime SA in 4,068 individuals with an AUD from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (23% lifetime SA; 53% female; mean age: 38). We explored risk for lifetime SA across other clinical conditions ascertained from a clinical interview, polygenic scores for comorbid psychiatric probl

Physiological Effects of Endotracheal Suctioning in Neonates: A Prospective Observational Study in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

PURPOSE: Endotracheal suctioning is a routinely performed but potentially distressing intervention in neonates with an artificial airway. Although necessary for secretion clearance, ETS can provoke adverse physiological responses affecting multiple systems. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in physiological variables during ETS in mechanically ventilated neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit. METHOD: A prospective observational study was conducted in the NICU of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, over a period from August 2022 to February 2023. Neonates aged 30 to 40 weeks o

Physiologic impact of inflammation in the polytrauma patient.

Polytrauma represents one of the most challenging scenarios in modern trauma care, with fracture healing outcomes that defy conventional expectations. Although isolated fractures typically follow predictable healing patterns, the presence of multiple injuries creates complex interactions that can either accelerate or severely impair bone regeneration. Remarkably, patients with traumatic brain injury often demonstrate enhanced fracture healing with rapid callus formation and shorter time to union, whereas those with systemic inflammatory burden from thoracic or multiorgan trauma frequently expe

Time Variable Models of Severe Hemorrhagic Shock in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Classical teaching dictates that damage control resuscitation is ideally implemented within the first or 'golden' hour after trauma-related hemorrhage. Given the heterogeneity of trauma, varied models must be utilized to guide ongoing investigation. We sought to determine exactly what happens during the 'golden hour' by varying hemorrhage and down times and mimicking venous or arterial bleeding while varying oxygen therapy, a readily available pre-hospital intervention, on survival in a small-animal rodent model. METHODS: Rats were bled by 40% of their blood volume over 30 or 60 m

Exploring the Link Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder, characterized by brief episodes of vertigo triggered by changes in head position. While idiopathic cases are frequent, post-traumatic BPPV has been increasingly recognized, particularly in individuals who have experienced traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI, ranging from mild concussions to severe head trauma, is a significant cause of neurological morbidity and is often associated with vestibular dysfunction. The pathophysiology of post-traumatic BPPV is thought to involve direct mechanical disruption

Operative management of a nail wound projectile to the skull base with unusual trajectory: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating cranial trauma through the orbit presents significant diagnostic and surgical challenges, especially when external signs are minimal. Blast injuries may drive foreign bodies (FBs) along unpredictable trajectories, risking vascular injury, intracranial hematoma, CSF leak, and infection. Prompt imaging and early multidisciplinary intervention are critical for avoiding complications and sequelae. OBSERVATIONS: A 24-year-old sustained a blast injury from mortar fire, resulting in a 10-cm nail penetrating his skull base. Remarkably, he walked 7 km to a medical facility, pre

Distinguishing vulnerability and resilience to posttraumatic stress disorder evaluating traumatic experiences, genetic risk and electronic health records.

What distinguishes vulnerability and resilience to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains unclear. Levering traumatic experiences reporting, genetic data, and electronic health records (EHR), we investigated and predicted the clinical comorbidities (co-phenome) of PTSD vulnerability and resilience in the UK Biobank (UKB) and All of Us Research Program (AoU), respectively. In 60,354 trauma-exposed UKB participants, we defined PTSD vulnerability and resilience considering PTSD symptoms, trauma burden, and polygenic risk scores. EHR-based phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) were condu

The impact of trauma core dimensions on anxiety and depression: a latent regression model through the Post-Traumatic Symptom Questionnaire (PTSQ).

Adverse life events (e.g., severe accidents, violence/abuse, organic disorders) can elicit traumatic responses characterized by intrusive thoughts, hyperarousal, and avoidance-highlighting the need for sound assessment tools. Also, these traumatic components could heighten anxiety and depression symptoms. This study aims included to: (1) assessing the psychometric properties of the Post-Traumatic Symptom Questionnaire (PTSQ) and delineating clinical cut-offs; (2) investigating how distinct trauma components contribute to anxiety and depression symptoms. Involving 761 participants who experienc

Transient regional osteoporosis of the ankle with shifting bone marrow edema pattern within the joint.

We describe a case of bone marrow edema (BME) shifting within one ankle joint in a 35-year-old - male patient. He presented with increasing pain and no history of trauma. Clinically no local swelling was found and laboratory findings and plain x-ray studies were normal. He did not improve on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 2 weeks. A Gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging showed no evidence of synovitis, but BME was observed in the talus and transient regional osteoporosis was diagnosed. The patient was treated conservatively by protective partial weight bearing of the affect

Exposure to footshock stress downregulates antioxidant genes and increases neuronal apoptosis in an Aβ(1-42) rat model of Alzheimer's disease.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that develops from exposure to trauma, mostly when normal psychological mechanisms fail. Studies have shown that people who have PTSD are susceptible to developing dementia, mostly Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting common underlying risk factors in the comorbidity. However, data elucidating links between these conditions is scarce. Here we show that footshock stress exacerbates AD-like pathology. To induce a trauma-like condition, the rats were exposed to multiple intense footshocks followed by a single reminder. This was
