We investigated the therapeutic effects of milacemide in seven patients with myoclonus and three patients with the stiff-person syndrome in an open-label trial. Milacemide was initiated at 800 mg/day and was gradually increased to a maximum dosage of 2,400 mg/day. No significant improvement occurred in the 10 patients.

Mortality rates for institutionalized persons with mental retardation were presented. Rates were provided for two time intervals, 1974 through 1979 and 1980 through 1985, and by age, race, and gender. Consistent differences between black and white residents or by gender were not indicated. However, significant improvement in mortality did occur between the two time periods. This case demonstrates a radiographic personal identification. A body was found but no positive results were obtained from the remains regarding the cause of death, the manner of death, or precise identification. At the autopsy, a characteristic radiographic deformity was found in the hip joints. After searching the registry of persons with congenital acetabular dysplasia and super-imposing the postmortem radiograph on the films of the registry, the identification was successful.

Towards the end of 1988, 85 out of 170 patients indicated for endoscopic papillotomy (EPT) were over 65 years of age, and, of these, 54% were 75 and more. EPT was successful in 90.6% of those over 65. Total morbidity was 4.7% and mortality 1.2%. Total parenteral nutrition is now a broadly used method whose efficacy is confirmed, even if it is still not free from risk of complications. The Authors report their own clinical experience on 130 cases in the period 1981-1988. Complications were registered in 4.6% of the observed cases. Sessile (villous) tumours of the rectum are uncommon and individual surgeons are unlikely to have wide experience in their management. A study was made of a unique personal series (AMC) of 104 cases encountered from 1974 to 1984; minimum duration of follow-up was 5 years. A curriculum for teaching self-protection skills to eight adults with mild mental retardation was evaluated. The curriculum, which was presented in a small-group format across nine 25 to 30 minute sessions, uses instructions, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and praise to teach skills needed to discriminate and safely respond to abduction and sexual abuse situations. In 86 patients with chronic granulomatous and granulating periodontitis in the absence of other pathology the lipid peroxidation products levels were increased as indicated by accumulation of malonic dialdehyde and diene conjugates in the whole blood.
