[Injuries to the permanent teeth. Periodontal lesions].

Tooth luxations are relatively common. In case of concussion or subluxation the tooth is not displaced. The treatment will consist of relief of the tooth. Most frequent complications are pulp necrosis and obliteration of pulpal tissues. In case of extrusive luxation pulpal tissues and the periodontal ligament are injured. When tooth mobility is increased flexible splinting should be considered. Endodontic treatment is necessary after extrusive luxation of a tooth with completed root formation. Teeth with open apex often show pulpal obliteration after extensive luxation. Lateral luxation is mor

[Heterotopic replantation and delayed implant restoration following complete avulsion of maxillary central incisors: a case report].

Dental trauma is one of the relatively common emergencies in clinical dental practice, with a high incidence rate, and the maxillary central incisors are the most frequently affected. This article reports a case of a 17-year-old female patient who suffered traumatic complete avulsion of teeth 11 and 21, with tooth 21 lost after avulsion. The prognosis for replantation was poor due to the absence of the buccal alveolar bone wall of tooth 11. Therefore, tooth 11 was treated with extracorporeal root canal therapy and then replanted into the alveolar socket of tooth 21, which had better conditions

Autotransplantation of Maxillary Third Molar with Its Attached Buccal Cortical Plate Combined with a Connective Tissue Graft.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth replacement often leads to insufficient vertical volume in the recipient socket bone. The aim of this novel report is to present a successful fully guided autotransplantation of a maxillary right third molar (tooth #1) with its attached buccal plate. The procedure was combined with a palatal connective tissue graft to reconstruct a buccal hard and soft tissue defect of an irreparable maxillary right first molar (tooth #3). METHODS: A 45-year-old man complaining of pain in tooth #3 came to the clinic. Tooth #3 was non-restorable due to an extensive caries and a vertical roo

Esthetic and functional rehabilitation of a severely compromised central incisor: an interdisciplinary approach.

This case report of a patient with a central incisor with rapid destruction of periodontal tissues associated with pathologic tooth migration illustrates the esthetic and functional reconstruction of a severely compromised tooth. An interdisciplinary approach, including resolution of the infection and regenerative periodontal surgery followed by orthodontic tooth movement, transformed a hopeless tooth with high mobility, attachment loss approaching the apex, and a Miller Class IV recession into a clinically healthy tooth. Treatment planning for periodontally involved anterior teeth with pathol

Trauma to the primary dentition.

The guiding principle in managing trauma to the primary dentition is potential sequelae to the permanent tooth. If the risk to the permanent tooth is great, the primary tooth should be removed. If esthetics are a concern to the parent, a number of appliances can be fabricated to temporarily manage this issue. It is important that parents realize that the desire to maintain optimum esthetics by maintaining a significantly injured primary tooth can, in many cases, cause more damage to the permanent tooth. Where avulsions have occurred, the old adage "when in doubt, leave it out" is still perhaps

The Sweet Tooth Trial: A Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial Investigating the Effects of A 6-Month Low, Regular, or High Dietary Sweet Taste Exposure on Sweet Taste Liking, and Various Outcomes Related to Food Intake and Weight Status.

BACKGROUND: Public health organizations currently recommend lowering the consumption of sweet-tasting foods, on the assumption that a lower exposure to sweet-tasting foods lowers preferences for sweet taste, decreasing sugar and energy intake, and aiding obesity prevention. However, empirical data supporting this narrative are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of a 6-mo low, regular, and high dietary sweet taste exposure on liking for sweet taste. METHODS: In a parallel-groups randomized controlled intervention study, 180 healthy adults (female/male:

Mechanical evaluation of newly developed mouthpiece using polyethylene terephthalate glycol for transoral robotic surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS), performed with the da Vinci surgical system (da Vinci), has been classified as a surgical approach for benign and malignant lesions of the oral cavity and laryngopharynx. It provides several unique advantages, which include a three-dimensional magnified view, ability to see and work around curves or angles, and the availability of two or three robotic arms. At present, however, the da Vinci surgical system does not provide haptic feedback. The potential risks specific to the transoral use of the da Vinci include tooth injury, mucosal laceration, ocular injury,

Weight, height and eruption times of permanent teeth of children aged 4-15 years in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tooth eruption is a continuous biological process by which developing teeth emerge through the jaws and the overlying mucosa to enter into the oral cavity. Tooth eruption time and sequence are important factors in dental treatment planning, particularly in orthodontics, but also in forensic dentistry to estimate age of a child. Tooth eruption time is influenced by many factors. In this study we set out to determine the timing of eruption of permanent teeth and assess its association with the height and weight of school children aged 4-15 years in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: This was

Autotransplantation for Restoration of Dentition Defects After Excision of Jaw Cysts.

Bone defect caused by jaw cystectomy has always been the main factor affecting postoperative wound healing and is also the common cause of maxillofacial bone defect, which brings challenges to the subsequent restoration of missing teeth. In this paper, the authors report a 22-year-old young woman who had a mandibular cyst in the left lower posterior tooth area. She underwent mandibular bone cyst excision and simultaneous extraction of teeth 36 and 37. One and two months after the removal of the mandibular bone cyst, autologous tooth transplantation was performed in stages from tooth 28 to toot

PDLSC-CM targets HAPLN1 in macrophages to reduce root resorption in delayed replanted teeth.

BACKGROUND: Tooth avulsion is the most serious dental trauma, mainly affecting anterior teeth in adolescents. Delayed tooth replantation is the most common situation in clinical, but root resorption is a common complication that can lead to tooth loss. As implant is not feasible in adolescents, strategies to mitigate root resorption remain a major challenge in dentistry. We aim to evaluate the therapeutic effect and potential target of periodontal ligament stem cell-conditioned medium (PDLSC-CM) to reduce root resorption in delayed replanted tooth. METHODS: Clinical samples from delayed tooth

[Root resorption of vital and endodontically treated teeth in orthodontic movement].

Orthodontic tooth movement frequently induces the resorption of the tooth root, although valuable information concerning the relationship between the root resorption and force magnitude, duration and types of tooth movement and the condition of periodontium obtained. However, it is incompletely known that the situation of candidated tooth itself of orthodontic movement in which pulpectomized non-vital condition influence the process of root resorption and subsequent repairing. Thus, the study was conducted to clarify the effect by the pulpectomy accompanied with tooth movement on the process o

The teeth and dentition of the filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) revisited tomographically.

The upper and lower tooth-bearing jaws of the filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) were scanned using a micro-CT system in order to address the existing gaps between the traditional pictures of the morphology and histology. 2D tomograms, reconstructed 3D models and virtual dissection were employed to examine and evaluate the in situ geometry of tooth implantation and the mode of tooth attachment both separately and collectively. No distinct sockets comparable to those in mammals were evident, but shallow depressions were observed in the premaxillary and the dentary. The opening of the tooth pulp

Multidifferentiation potential of dental-derived stem cells.

Tooth-related diseases and tooth loss are widespread and are a major public health issue. The loss of teeth can affect chewing, speech, appearance and even psychology. Therefore, the science of tooth regeneration has emerged, and attention has focused on tooth regeneration based on the principles of tooth development and stem cells combined with tissue engineering technology. As undifferentiated stem cells in normal tooth tissues, dental mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs), which are a desirable source of autologous stem cells, play a significant role in tooth regeneration. Researchers hope to reco

Surgical resection after orthodontic eruption: A case report of compound odontoma-induced impacted maxillary right central incisor.

Herein, we described the multidisciplinary treatment of a mixed dentition patient with impacted maxillary right central incisor and adjacent compound odontoma. In contrast to conventional treatment procedures, orthodontic traction was first performed for the affected tooth in this case, followed by resection of the odontoma. The odontoma did not shift after eruption of the incisor and was safely removed after alignment of the impacted tooth. No root resorption, gingival recession or bone defect occurred in this case. These results demonstrated that the orthodontic force can break the connectio

Managing An Unexpected Cemento-Dentinal Tear with a 3D-printed Crown Generated Chairside: A Case Report with 2 years Follow Up.

A 65-year-old Caucasian female was seen for the treatment of a failing mandibular fixed dental prosthesis (FDP). When the abutment teeth were evaluated, tooth 44 had an extensive carious lesion and was determined non-restorable, and tooth 47 was deemed salvageable. The patient presented and accepted a treatment plan involving the extraction of tooth 44, a three-unit zirconia implant-supported FDP to replace teeth 44,45, and 46, and a zirconia crown for tooth 47. At the time of insertion, when the interim restoration covering tooth 47 was removed, the cementum and dentin of the tooth separated

Mucogingival considerations in orthodontic treatment.

Alterations in the mucogingival complex will occur during orthodontic tooth movement, but these are independent of the apico-coronal width (height) of the gingiva. The integrity of the periodontium can be maintained during orthodontic therapy also in areas that have only a minimal zone of gingiva. In terms of changes in the position of the soft tissue margin and in gingival dimensions, the important factors to consider are the direction of the tooth movement and the bucco-lingual thickness of the gingiva. Lingual tooth movement will result in an increased bucco-lingual thickness of the tissue

Semi-Immediate Autotransplantation of a Maxillary Third Molar With Unfavorable Root Anatomy: A Case Report.

Tooth autotransplantation is a procedure in which a donor tooth is transplanted within the same patient's jaw to replace a missing tooth. Donor tooth root morphology and periodontal ligament integrity are key factors influencing success. We report a semi-immediate autotransplantation of a maxillary third molar with a 90° divergent root into a site previously affected by a periapical abscess. After the extraction of the compromised tooth (#15) and removal of the interradicular septum, the site was left to heal to allow soft tissue closure and infection resolution. During this period, CBCT imagi

Long-Term Follow-Up of a Patient with Ankylosis of a Primary Incisor Caused by Trauma: A Case Report.

Introduction and Clinical Significance: Tooth ankylosis is a serious complication that can occur because of the replantation of an avulsed tooth. However, few reports have investigated the follow-up of replanted or ankylosed primary incisors because the replantation of primary teeth is not recommended in the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology. Case Presentation: A boy aged 4 years and 8 months was referred to hospital for further evaluation of the maxillary right primary central incisor. It had been avulsed and replanted 2 years earlier. The tooth was positioned

Quantifying the potential of morphological parameters for human dental identification: part 2-selecting the strongest identifiers in mandibular permanent teeth.

The current study aimed to select the best dental morphological identifiers for human identification. Sixty-two panoramic radiographs were collected retrospectively, in which six measurements were performed on all seven mandibular left permanent teeth: tooth length (TL), crown length (CL), root length (RL), crown width (CW), cervical width (CEJW), and root width (RW). Nine length-width ratios were then calculated using these measurements. Three groups of statistics were considered: (1) inter-observer reliability quantified by intra-class correlation (ICC); (2) mean "potential set"; and (3) Spe
