Rare earth magnets and impaction.

Aberration in the eruption process was found to be a prime etiologic factor in inducing impaction. Thus an ideal treatment approach should attempt to mimic the normal eruption modus. However, conventional traction methods have been found to be associated with gingiva inflammation, bone recession, reduced attached gingiva, periodontal pockets, exposed cementoenamel junction, and root resorption of the impacted and adjacent teeth. These side effects are the result of premature exposure of the impacted tooth to the oral cavity through a nonself-cleansing pathway and an uncontrolled force system.

Is Orthodontic Treatment with Microperforations Worth It? A Scoping Review.

Malformations of teeth and dental arches can produce functional modifications intermingled with esthetic alterations. Children's rehabilitation may be long, requiring multiple interventions. One of the main challenges of contemporary orthodontics is to reduce treatment time by accelerating orthodontic tooth movements. Among the currently used methods, micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) are flapless, minimally invasive perforations that induce a local trauma to the bone, increase healing capacity, and accelerate dental movements. The use of MOPs in orthodontics is spreading but there are no definit

Polymethyl methacrylate-based bone cement using a prototype for gingival smile: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of gummy smile (GS) with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based implants is suggested in specific cases such as those in which there is a lack of lip support due to a marked depression of the anterior maxillary process; however, it can be associated with certain complications related to the material and the surgical approach. METHODS: A patient with a GS of combined etiology was treated with clinical crown lengthening and lip repositioning surgery with placement of a PMMA-based bone cement implant to fill the subnasal depression. Surgical planning was performed using a

Clinical characteristics of odontogenic sinusitis with periapical lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Although the symptoms and radiographic signs may mimic rhinogenic sinusitis, odontogenic sinusitis (OS) with periapical lesions (PALs) is fundamentally an endodontic infection. It is considered to be one of the main causes of OS, especially when presented unilaterally. Despite this routine dental examination is not performed and periapical infection frequently remains undiagnosed by otolaryngologists and radiologists. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective observational study covered a group of 61 patients with symptomatic OS with PAL. Assessment of quality of life was done usin

Unexpected soft tissue changes in response to root coverage using an acellular dermal matrix allograft: 12–year follow up.

A woman undergoing orthodontic treatment presented with recession and reduced keratinized gingiva on teeth 31 and 41. The patient declined creation of a donor site for conventional autogenous connective soft tissue grafting and opted for an acellular dermal matrix soft tissue substitute for root coverage. Orthodontic treatment followed, and the patient returned for orthognatic surgery after 12 years. Long-term follow up revealed that root coverage remained stable over time and creeping attachment on both teeth was observed. Unexpectedly, an increase in the width of keratinized gingiva was obse

The influence of volume, type of irrigant and flushing method on removing artificially placed dentine debris from the apical root canal during passive ultrasonic irrigation.

AIM: To determine the influence of volume, irrigant and method of flushing on the removal of artificially-placed dentine debris from the apical part of root canals during passive ultrasonic irrigation. METHODOLOGY: Access cavities were prepared in 15 canine teeth and their root canals instrumented to size 20, 0.10 taper. Each root was split longitudinally, forming two halves. A groove was cut in the canal wall 2-6 mm from the apex in each half which was then filled with dentine debris prior to the roots being reassembled. All canals were ultrasonically irrigated, using a size 15, 0.02 taper s

Successful treatment of pulpal-periodontal combined lesion in a birooted maxillary lateral incisor with concomitant palato-radicular groove. A case report.

Palato-radicular groove (PRG) is a common developmental anomaly of maxillary incisors, whereas PRG associated with a birooted maxillary incisor is relatively infrequent. The clinical significance of PRG is related to the incidence of localized periodontitis with or without pulpal pathosis, depending on the depth, extent, and complexity of the groove. Successful treatments of PRG in single-rooted incisors have been reported in the literature. However, treatment of PRG in birooted incisors has often been ineffective. This case report describes a pulpal-periodontal combined lesion occurring on a

Plaque pH and microflora of dental plaque on sound and carious root surfaces.

Given the hypothesis that root caries is the result of acid formation by acidogenic micro-organisms, the present study was performed to relate sucrose-induced pH response of dental plaque on root surfaces to the microbial composition of the overlying plaque. Seventeen caries-active elderly Chinese with poor oral hygiene and with both sound and carious root surfaces were examined. Plaque pH was measured before and up to one hour after a controlled sucrose mouthrinse. Plaque samples for microbiologic analyses were collected from 2 sound and 2 or 3 carious pH-measurement sites in each subject. Th

The Effect of Speed and Rotation for Protaper File Systems on Postobturation Pain in a Single Visit and Multiple (Two) Visits in Root Canal Therapy: An In Vivo Study.

INTRODUCTION: The basic idea of a root canal treatment is to alleviate the pain and heal the infection within the infected tooth, which can be resolved in a single visit or multiple visits in root canal therapy. Therefore, in this article, an in vivo comparison of single visits and multiple visits using different rotation and speed for two Protaper universal design file systems is done on the basis of time taken and incidence of pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred single-rooted premolars with irreversible symptomatic pulpitis were assigned to two groups of 50 patients each using the odd-

Extracellular matrix in tooth cementum and mantle dentin: localization of osteopontin and other noncollagenous proteins, plasma proteins, and glycoconjugates by electron microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Noncollagenous proteins (NCPs) are considered to have multiple functions related to the formation, turnover, and repair of the collagen-based mineralized tissues. Collectively, they comprise a class of generally acidic, mineral-binding proteins showing extensive posttranslational modifications, including glycosylation, phosphorylation, and sulfation. METHODS. We have used colloidal-gold immunocytochemistry and lectin-gold cytochemistry, together with transmission electron microscopy, to examine the organic matrix composition of tooth cementum and the subjacent mantle dentin in rode

Three-Dimensional Correlation Between Impacted Maxillary Canine Angulation and Root Resorption of Adjacent Lateral Incisors: A CBCT Study.

Background: Impacted maxillary canines frequently cause external root resorption of adjacent lateral incisors, a complication that may compromise tooth survival and orthodontic outcomes. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables precise three-dimensional assessment of canine position and resorption severity, yet the quantitative relationship between canine angulation and resorption remains incompletely characterized. Objectives: The objectives were to quantify the correlation between impacted maxillary canine angulation relative to the vertical reference line and the severity of adjacent la

Protocol for immediate implant replacement of infected teeth.

Extraction and immediate implant placement has become routine procedure due to reduced treatment time and the preservation of anatomical structures. However, in many cases, this technique involves teeth with different degrees of tissue compromise due to underlying infections. Until now, the degree of implant compromise has not been described, nor has a clinical management protocol been established for these cases. The aim of this article is to report the clinical results of a protocol used for immediate implant placement and provisionalization in infected extraction sockets. A classification o

Microscopic characterization of root surface-associated microbial plaque in localized juvenile periodontitis.

The purpose of this investigation was to characterize by scanning electron microscopy, the microbial morphotypes associated with the roots of teeth from patients exhibiting localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). Eighteen teeth were examined from 10 adolescent patients who satisfied the standard clinical diagnostic criteria for LJP. The microscopic evaluation was facilitated by dividing that portion of the root exposed to the periodontal pocket into coronal, middle, and apical one-thirds. Controls consisted of an equal number of teeth matched as to pocket depth and anatomical type obtained fro

Light and ultrastructural studies of human chronic periapical lesions.

Forty clinically chronic periapical granulomas and cysts and their corresponding teeth were removed. Diagnosis was by light and transmission electron microscopy. Ultrastructural features of the root surfaces concerned and the corresponding soft tissue were detected by scanning electron microscopy. Chronic periapical inflammation had caused root resorption which affected the cementum and/or the dentin. There were no ultrastructural differences between granuloma- and cyst-induced root resorption. Resorption lacunae were devoid of epithelial and connective tissue attachment. However, root surface
