Screen time and myopia: A serial multiple mediator SEM analysis.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has influenced education systems worldwide, and significantly increased screen time for college students, posing a potential risk of myopia. In China, ninety percent of college students suffer from myopia. Excessive screen time changes college students' lifestyles, imposes potential health risks, and affects opportunities for employment. It is important to identify the potential correlation between screen time use and myopia among college students. METHODS: This paper conducted a nationwide experiment using Chinese college students and set a multiple-mediator SEM model to

Toxoplasmosis: Recent Advances in Understanding the Link Between Infection and Host Behavior.

Humans, wildlife, and domestic animals are intimately linked through shared infections. Many parasites and pathogens use multiple host species, either opportunistically or sequentially, such that managing disease risk frequently requires a broader understanding of the ecological community. The coccidian protozoan Toxoplasma gondii infects more than one hundred species of vertebrates, ranging from bats to beluga whales. In humans, acute toxoplasmosis can have serious health consequences for immunocompromised individuals. Even amongst asymptomatic patients, however, toxoplasmosis has been linked

Evaluation of the Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury Questionnaire.

Fear avoidance behavior is related to symptom persistence and disability in various health conditions, such as chronic pain. Fear avoidance behavior also may impact recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but no measure of this construct has been psychometrically validated for the mTBI population. Adults who sustained an mTBI (n = 159) were recruited from three outpatient mTBI clinics. Participants completed the new Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury Questionnaire (FAB-TBI). The FAB-TBI includes 16 items drawn from well-established fear avoidance scales, primarily i

Self-testing for liver disease - response to an online liver test questionnaire.

Background: Elevated liver enzymes and chronic liver disease are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Broad availability of internet questionnaires obtains representative insights into awareness of (chronic) liver disease in the general population. Also, these tools may be used to identify persons and populations at risk to prevent advanced liver disease. Methods: An online questionnaire regarding awareness of liver disease, risk behavior and awareness of own liver tests was implemented online. During 43 months study period, 210,230 participants accessed the online questionnaire.

The Impact of Various Promotional Activities on Ebola Prevention Behaviors and Psychosocial Factors Predicting Ebola Prevention Behaviors in the Gambia Evaluation of Ebola Prevention Promotions.

The outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) from 2014 to 2016 is over. However, several outbreaks of contagious diseases have already arisen and will recur. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EVD prevention promotions in the Gambia and to assess the psychosocial factors that steer three behaviors: handwashing with soap, calling the Ebola Hotline, and not touching a person who might be suffering from EVD. In 2015, data were gathered from 498 primary care providers. The questionnaire was based on psychosocial factors from the risks, attitudes, norms, abilities, and self-regulatio

Identification of repellent odorants to the body louse, Pediculus humanus corporis, in clove essential oil.

The control of body lice is an important issue for human health and welfare because lice act as vectors of disease such as typhus, relapsing fever, and trench fever. Body lice exhibit avoidance behavior to some essential oils, including clove essential oil. Therefore, odorants containing clove essential oil components may potentially be useful in the development of repellents to body lice. However, such odorants that induce avoidance behavior in body lice have not yet been identified from clove essential oil. Here, we established an analysis method to evaluate the avoidance behavior of body li

Illness beliefs and walking behavior after revascularization for intermittent claudication: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are recommended to increase physical activity to reduce cardiovascular risk. Vascular intervention (surgery or angioplasty) treats the symptom (intermittent claudication), but not the underlying cardiovascular disease. This study aims to explore the beliefs and physical activity behavior of patients with PAD who have received vascular intervention. METHODS: Twenty participants who had received a vascular intervention for intermittent claudication between 6 months and 2 years previously participated in semistructured interviews. The interv

Evaluating the seriousness of adolescent adjustment reactions.

Adolescents can be expected to inflict some pain on their environment periodically, and complete conformity of an adolescent is not necessarily a sign of mental health. With the exception of some particular behaviors such as a suicide attempt, auditory hallucinations, or a school phobia, one cannot make a prediction about the existence of, or seriousness of, a psychological problem of an adolescent based solely on the occurrence of any one particular antisocial act. Such typical adolescent problems such as stealing, truancy, sexual involvements, and drug use can be either a normal part of adol

Prisons and Embodiment: Self-Management Strategies of an Incarcerated Population.

Weight gain and obesity in prison are, like elsewhere, associated with an increase in caloric intake and reduction in physical activity, but these factors are not solely under the control of a prisoner. Nineteen semistructured interviews were conducted in two male prisons in the United Kingdom to explore participants' thoughts, beliefs, and feelings on the role prison plays on weight change. Data from interviews were analyzed through grounded theory methodology. The concept of embodiment was used to explain not only how prisoners tend to believe the physical and emotional consequences of impri

Contraception-Related Posts from Adolescents, Young Adults, and Caregivers on Reddit: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To summarize contraceptive information shared and sought by adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and caregivers on Reddit. METHODS: Posts were collected from 8 subreddits (June 2022 to September 2024) using contraception-related keywords. Eligible posts were in English and authored by self-identifying AYAs (<26 years) or caregivers; comments from 10% of posts were included. We used hybrid inductive-deductive qualitative content analysis to characterize each post's primary purpose and to summarize common methods, side effects, medical and access questions, confusion/misconcepti

Temporal trends of no moderate to vigorous physical activity in adolescents: a 16-year trend analysis of 115,926 participants.

BACKGROUND: Engaging in no moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) has been recognized as an important indicator in physical activity (PA) surveillance, as any engagement in MVPA confers health benefits compared to none. Studying the prevalence of no MVPA can provide valuable insights into physical inactivity patterns and inform public health intervention efforts. While some cross-sectional studies have examined this issue, no research has analysed year-to-year trends. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess trends of no MVPA among adolescents and key subgroups using a nationally

'Getting addicted to it and losing a lot of money… it's just like a hole.' A grounded theory model of how social determinants shape adolescents' choices to not gamble.

BACKGROUND: Gambling abstinence when underage lowers the risk of harmful gambling in later life. However, little research has examined why many young people refrain from gambling, even though this knowledge can inform protective strategies and lower risk factors to reduce underage gambling and subsequent harm. This study draws on the lived experience of adolescent non-gamblers to explore how social determinants while growing up have shaped their reasons and choices to not gamble. METHODS: Fourteen Australian non-gamblers, aged 12-17 years, participated in an in-depth individual interview (4 g
