Dim light at night interacts with intermittent hypoxia to alter cognitive and affective responses.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and dim light at night (dLAN) have both been independently associated with alterations in mood and cognition. We aimed to determine whether dLAN would interact with intermittent hypoxia (IH), a condition characteristic of OSA, to alter the behavioral, cognitive, and affective responses. Adult male mice were housed in either standard lighting conditions (14:10-h light-dark cycle; 150 lux:0 lux) or dLAN (150 lux:5 lux). Mice were then exposed to IH (15 cycles/h, 8 h/day, FiO2 nadir of 5%) for 3 wk, then tested in assays of affective and cognitive responses; brains w

Neural resources for processing language and environmental sounds: evidence from aphasia.

Although aphasia is often characterized as a selective impairment in language function, left hemisphere lesions may cause impairments in semantic processing of auditory information, not only in verbal but also in nonverbal domains. We assessed the 'online' relationship between verbal and nonverbal auditory processing by examining the ability of 30 left hemisphere-damaged aphasic patients to match environmental sounds and linguistic phrases to corresponding pictures. The verbal and nonverbal task components were matched carefully through a norming study; 21 age-matched controls and five right h

Stimulant medications affect arousal and reward, not attention.

Prescription stimulants such as methylphenidate are being used by an increasing portion of the population, primarily children. These potent norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors promote wakefulness, suppress appetite, enhance physical performance, and are purported to increase attentional abilities. Prior functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have yielded conflicting results about the effects of stimulants on the brain's attention, action/motor, and salience regions that are difficult to reconcile with their proposed attentional effects. Here, we utilized resting-state

Complementary deficits in perceptual classification in pure alexia and acquired prosopagnosia - New insights from two classic cases.

Pure alexia and prosopagnosia traditionally have been seen as prime examples of dissociated, category-specific agnosias affecting reading and face recognition, respectively. More recent accounts have moved towards domain-independent explanations that postulate potential cross-links between different types of visual agnosia. According to one proposal, abnormal crowding, i.e. the impairment of recognition when features of adjacent objects are positioned too closely to each other, might provide a unified account for the perceptual deficits experienced by an agnosic patient. An alternative approac

Photon-Counting Detector CT-Based Virtual Monoenergetic Imaging With Metal Artifact Reduction for Endodontic Diagnostics.

INTRODUCTION: This ex vivo study aimed to determine the optimal energy level for virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) and to evaluate the effectiveness of iterative metal artifact reduction (iMAR) in assessing simulated endodontic challenges and complications. METHODS: Sixteen extracted third molars were simulated with one of eight distinct endodontic diagnostic challenges and imaged using PCD-CT at radiation doses equivalent to standard-dose cone-beam CT. VMIs were reconstructed from 70-190 keV at 10 keV increments, both with and wit

The identification and prediction of atrial fibrillation in coronary artery disease patients: a multicentre retrospective study based on Bayesian network.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) coexisting with coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a prevailing issue that often results in poor short- and long-term patient outcomes. Screening has been proposed as a method to increase AF detection rates and reduce the incidence of poor prognosis through early intervention. Nevertheless, due to the cost implications and uncertainty over the benefits of a systematic screening programme, the International Task Force currently recommends against screening. This study is to employ Bayesian networks (BN) for assessing the pre-test probability (PTP) of AF i

Neuropsychological and functional correlates of clock-drawing test in elderly institutionalized patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing need for a cognitive assessment tool that can be used for older adults with schizophrenia in clinical settings. The clock-drawing test (CDT) is a brief cognitive test that covers a wide range of cognitive function. Although it is widely used to assess patients with dementia, limited data are available on its usefulness in older patients with schizophrenia. Thus, we investigated the psychometric properties of the CDT and their relationship with life functions to examine the test's usefulness for assessing cognitive function in older adults with schizophrenia

Dissociable patterns of neural activity during response inhibition in depressed adolescents with and without suicidal behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired attentional control and behavioral control are implicated in adult suicidal behavior. Little is known about the functional integrity of neural circuitry supporting these processes in suicidal behavior in adolescence. METHOD: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in 15 adolescent suicide attempters with a history of major depressive disorder (ATTs), 15 adolescents with a history of depressive disorder but no suicide attempt (NATs), and 14 healthy controls (HCs) during the performance of a well-validated go-no-go response inhibition and motor control task that meas

Exergame as medicine? Functional brain adaptations linked to cognitive changes in neurocognitive disorders: exploratory randomized controlled trial.

Tailored multidomain lifestyle modifications are recommended for reducing dementia risk in mild neurocognitive disorder (mNCD). However, evidence of their capacity to modify disease trajectories and restore functional brain abnormalities remains limited. We aimed to explore functional brain adaptations and correlate underlying cognitive improvements in response to a personalized "exergame as medicine" program ("Brain-IT") for secondary mNCD prevention. Participants were randomized to 12 weeks home-based "Brain-IT" (physical-motor-cognitive with integrated biofeedback breathing training; 120 mi

Predicting unplanned readmissions in the intensive care unit: a multimodality evaluation.

A hospital readmission is when a patient who was discharged from the hospital is admitted again for the same or related care within a certain period. Hospital readmissions are a significant problem in the healthcare domain, as they lead to increased hospitalization costs, decreased patient satisfaction, and increased risk of adverse outcomes such as infections, medication errors, and even death. The problem of hospital readmissions is particularly acute in intensive care units (ICUs), due to the severity of the patients' conditions, and the substantial risk of complications. Predicting Unplann

Favorable effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in attentional control and conversion rate to psychosis in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Omega-3-polyunsaturated-fatty-acids were suggested against cognitive dysfunctions and conversion to psychosis. However, a recent multicenter trial found no effect in reducing conversion rates in individuals at risk of developing schizophrenia. Patients' genetic heterogeneity and the timing of treatment might influence omega-3 efficacy. Here, we addressed the impact of omega-3 early treatment in both mice and human subjects with a 22q11.2 genetic hemi-deletion (22q11DS), characterized by cognitive dysfunctions and high penetrance of schizophrenia. We first tested the behavioural and cognitive c

Population interactions between parietal and primary motor cortices during reach.

Neural interactions between parietal area 2/5 and primary motor cortex (M1) were examined to determine the timing and behavioral correlates of cortico-cortical interactions. Neural activity in areas 2/5 and M1 was simultaneously recorded with 96-channel microelectrode arrays in three rhesus monkeys performing a center-out reach task. We introduce a new method to reveal parietal-motor interactions at a population level using partial spike-field coherence (PSFC) between ensembles of neurons in one area and a local field potential (LFP) in another. PSFC reflects the extent of phase locking betwee

Anal fissure nanocarrier of lercanidipine for enhanced transdermal delivery: formulation optimization, ex vivo and in vivo assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Pathogenesis of anal fissure (AF) is associated with raised resting anal pressures (RAP) involving contraction of smooth muscle. Therefore, the drug delivery strategy should be customized to reduce this raised RAP. In this investigation, in order to achieve this task, a transdermal nanoemulsion (NE) gel of lercanidipine (LER) was developed and optimized to evaluate its permeation ability and in vivo performance. Further, the same formulation was explored for droplet size analysis, zeta potential measurement and stability studies. METHODS: Pseudo-ternary phase diagram was constructe

Longitudinal changes in hand dominance and manual dexterity in normal aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI): a kinematic study.

INTRODUCTION: Decrements on hand dominance in older populations, including neurodegenerative conditions, have been reported cross-sectionally. At present, no longitudinal research on this issue is available. METHODS: To address this research gap, we conducted a detailed kinematic analysis of unimanual movements of the dominant and non-dominant hands in 16 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (M age = 69.3 yrs) and 20 healthy controls (HC) (M age = 69.9 yrs) at two points in time with an averaged time interval of 4.5 years between evaluations (3.5 yrs. for HC; 5.35 yrs. for MCI). Functional mapping of the somatotopic organization of the supplementary motor area using navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and computer vision-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The supplementary motor area (SMA) is a cortical region involved in motor and language functions. Motor representations within the SMA follow a somatotopic organization: Anterior regions are linked to orofacial movements, middle regions to upper limb movements, and posterior regions to lower limb movements. SMA lesions may produce impairments that correspond to this somatotopy; therefore, preoperative assessment may aid diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to revise and extend a protocol for assessing the SMA using navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS),

Oscillatory Neural Signatures of Visual Perception Across Developmental Stages in Individuals With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Numerous behavioral studies have highlighted the contribution of visual perceptual deficits to the nonverbal cognitive profile of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. However, the neurobiological processes underlying these widespread behavioral alterations are yet to be fully understood. Thus, in this paper, we investigated the role of neural oscillations toward visuoperceptual deficits to elucidate the neurobiology of sensory impairments in deletion carriers. METHODS: We acquired 125 high-density electroencephalography recordings during a visual grating task in a group of

A computer-aided method based on geometrical texture features for a precocious detection of fetal Hydrocephalus in ultrasound images.

BACKGROUD: Hydrocephalus is the most common anomaly of the fetal head characterized by an excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain processing. The diagnostic process of fetal heads using traditional evaluation techniques are generally time consuming and error prone. Usually, fetal head size is computed using an ultrasound (US) image around 20-22 weeks, which is the gestational age (GA). Biometrical measurements are extracted and compared with ground truth charts to identify normal or abnormal growth. METHODS: In this paper, an attempt has been made to enhance the Hydrocephalus characteriz

Altered prefrontal cortex activity during working memory task in Bipolar Disorder: A functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging study in euthymic bipolar I and II patients.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) deficits are among the most frequently impaired cognitive domains in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD), being considered promising cognitive endophenotype of the disorder. However, the related neurobiological correlates still deserve further investigation. The present study was aimed to explore whether dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activity during WM processing was abnormal in euthymic bipolar patients and may represent a potential trait-related phenotype associated with the disorder.
