Repeated positive fighting experience in male inbred mice.

Repeated aggression is a frequent symptom of many psychiatric and neurological disorders, including obsessive-compulsive and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, bipolar and post-traumatic stress disorders, epilepsy, autism, schizophrenia and drug abuse. However, repeated aggression is insufficiently studied because there is a lack of adequate models in animals. The sensory contact model (SCM), widely used to study the effects of chronic social defeat stress, can also be used to investigate the effects of repeated aggression. Mice with repeated positive fighting experience in daily agoni

Panic disorder and depression: relationship between psychological and biochemical aspects.

In a group of medication-free out-patients suffering from depression and/or panic disorder we investigated the interdependence between psychological parameters such as aggression and biochemical parameters such as serotonin and tryptophan. We compared the findings in the patient group with a reference group. In the group of patients as a whole negative correlations were observed between the concentration of serotonin in platelets and depression and with hostility and aggression against others. Serotonin in plasma and tryptophan correlated negatively with hostility. The findings support the sug

An exploration of the sleep quality and potential violence among patients with schizophrenia in community.

PURPOSE: Sleep quality in patients with schizophrenia is correlated with potential violence. However, few studies have conducted in-depth discussions on community patients with schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of demographic characteristics, psychiatric symptom severity, and sleep quality in community patients with schizophrenia on the risks of potential violence and its subdimensions (ie, physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility). DESIGN AND METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional research design. Using convenience sampling, 78

Intermittent Explosive Disorder and Substance Use Disorder: Analysis of the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Sample.

OBJECTIVE: A relationship between aggression and substance use has been debated for many years. While substance use increases the risk of aggressive behavior, no studies have reported on the relationship between impulsive aggression and substance use/disorder, specifically. METHODS: We analyzed data from the community-based National Comorbidity Survey Replication (N = 9,282 subjects) in order to examine the relationship between current DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder of impulsive aggression, and current substance use disorders (SUDs), overall, and with regard to alcoho

Can spouses provide knowledge of each other's communication patterns? A study of self-reports, spouses' reports, and observational coding.

The purposes of this study were (1) to assess individuals' self-reports of communication and their reports about their spouses' communication in order to examine the congruence of spousal views and (2) to investigate whether each report provided unique information about observed marital interactions. These associations were evaluated in a sample of 119 longtime married couples. The Verbal Aggression and Cooperation subscales from the Conflicts and Problem-Solving Scales were used as measures of negative and positive aspects of communication. The findings indicated that self-reports of both ver

Validity of the Children's Picture-Frustration Study: a social-cognitive perspective.

We used three studies to examine the validity of hostility scores from the Children's Form of the Picture-Frustration (P-F) Study in the context of Dodge's (1986) social information-processing model of aggression. Dodge's theory states that frustration results in retaliatory aggression only if the frustrated individual attributes hostile intent to the frustrator. Further, differences between aggressive and nonaggressive children in retaliatory aggression are more likely when the frustrator's intent is ambiguous than when the frustrator's intent is clear. In Study 1, items on the Children's P-F

The pharmacological management of oppositional behaviour, conduct problems, and aggression in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Part 1: psychostimulants, alpha-2 agonists, and atomoxetine.

OBJECTIVE: Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have oppositional behaviour, conduct problems, and aggression. These symptoms vary in severity, and may be related to a comorbid diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD). Critical evaluation of the efficacy of ADHD medications may guide the clinician regarding the usefulness of medications for these symptoms. METHOD: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of psychostimulants, alpha-2 agonists, and atomoxetine for oppositional behaviour, conduct problems, and aggression in

Prevalence and determinants of violent disciplinary practices for children in Bangladesh: Evidence from a nationally representative survey.

Violent discipline, characterized by the use of physical force resulting in bodily pain, discomfort, or resorting to scolding and emotional abuse to correct children's misbehavior, has gathered considerable attention due to its negative impact on children's development. This study aims to identify the prevalence and factors associated with different violent disciplinary practices toward children of 1-14 years age in Bangladesh. Utilizing data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) conducted in 2019, this analysis, based on interviews with parents of 70027 children, focuses on three

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fluoxetine in patients with intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a disorder of impulsive aggression that affects as many as 7.3% of the U.S. population during some period of life. Since central serotonergic (5-HT) system dysfunction is related to impulsive aggressive behavior, pharmacologic enhancement of 5-HT activity should reduce impulsive aggressive behavior in individuals with IED. METHOD: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the selective 5-HT uptake inhibitor fluoxetine was conducted in 100 individuals with IED (research diagnostic criteria) and current histories of impulsive ag

Self-injurious behavior among Greek male prisoners: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm among prisoners is a common phenomenon. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of self-injurious behavior (SIB) among Greek male prisoners, record their motives and determine independent risk factors. METHODS: A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was administered to 173 male prisoners in the Chalkida prison, Greece. The questionnaire included items on self-harm/SIB, demographic parameters, childhood history, family history, physical and mental disease, lifestyle and smoking habits, alcohol dependence (CAGE questionnaire), illicit substance use, aggression (Bu

Dichotomous Regulation of Social Behaviors by Nucleus Accumbens Neurons in Female and Male Syrian Hamsters.

Social relationships, including dominance status, are powerful regulators of mental health, and social experiences impact the continued expression of these behaviors. However, very little is known about the neuronal mechanisms that regulate the positive reinforcing effects of aggression that underlie social dominance, including potential sex differences. To address this gap, we used viral-mediated gene expression in Syrian hamsters to investigate how nucleus accumbens neurons regulate behavioral adaptations caused by aggression and other social interactions in both males and females. We found

Effects of men's subtle and overt psychological abuse on low-income women.

A social influence approach to the psychological abuse of women (Marshall, 1994; 1996) was expanded and tested. Distinctions are made between obvious acts (e.g., verbal aggression, controlling behaviors), overt acts which are easily recognized and described, and subtle acts which are least likely to be recognized as psychologically abusive. Men's violence and sexual aggression, and overt (dominating acts, indifference, monitoring, discrediting) and subtle (undermining, discounting, isolating) psychological abuse were examined as they related to women's psychological and emotional state and per

Assessment of aberrant behavior maintained by wheelchair movement in a child with developmental disabilities.

A child that used a wheelchair was anecdotally observed to display little aggressive behavior when being pushed in his wheelchair, but higher rates of aggressive behavior when movement was terminated. A functional analysis was conducted to systematically assess the relationship between aggression and wheelchair movement. The functional analysis results revealed elevated rates of aggression when it resulted in being briefly pushed in the wheelchair. This functional hypothesis was subsequently validated by teaching the child to request movement through appropriate means and demonstrating that ag

Response covariation of escape-maintained aberrant behavior correlated with sleep deprivation.

We examined the relation between sleep deprivation and changes in level and allocation of aberrant behavior (aggression and self-injury) for a child with moderate mental retardation. First, a series of functional analyses identified that self-injury (SIB) and aggression were maintained by escape from demands (i.e., were members of the same response class). Escape from demand conditions were then held constant over time while natural levels of sleep deprivation occurred. This final analysis demonstrated a correlation between sleep deprivation and increases in escape-maintained aberrant behavior

Does Coercive Process Play a Role in Teen Dating Violence?

Coercion theory posits that a vicious cycle of negative reinforcement traps both parents and children, shaping young children to become stably aggressive in conflicts with their parents. Research on intimate partner violence has found some evidence supporting the application of coercion theory in explaining aggressive escalation in adult conflicts as well. It is unclear whether the same processes are at play during teens' early dating relationships. On the one hand, dating aggression emerges as soon as dating relationships do. On the other hand, we also know that if aggression presents extreme

Association between Shame Aversion and Ruminative Retribution: Evidence for Moderation by Externalization of Blame and Control.

Shame aversion has been theorized to motivate aggression against the self or others as means of down-regulating shame. Additionally, the direction of aggression may depend on tendencies to attribute blame or causes internally or externally. Data from two separate samples were used to examine shame aversion and its interaction with causal or blame attributions in relation to aggression, controlling for shame-proneness, which is more commonly studied. Results indicated that shame aversion was positively associated with verbal, relational, and passive-rational aggression, as well as with ruminati

Comparing Sex Buyers With Men Who Do Not Buy Sex: New Data on Prostitution and Trafficking.

We investigated attitudes and behaviors associated with prostitution and sexual aggression among 101 men who buy sex and 101 age-, education-, and ethnicity-matched men who did not buy sex. Both groups tended to accept rape myths, be aware of harms of prostitution and trafficking, express ambivalence about the nature of prostitution, and believe that jail time and public exposure are the most effective deterrents to buying sex. Sex buyers were more likely than men who did not buy sex to report sexual aggression and likelihood to rape. Men who bought sex scored higher on measures of impersonal

Drug abuse and intimate partner violence: a comparative study of opioid-dependent fathers.

Because very little is known about the coparenting relationships of drug-abusing men, this comparative study was designed to examine the lifetime prevalence and recent frequency of intimate partner violence in the coparenting relationships of 106 fathers enrolled in methadone maintenance treatment. When compared with 118 community controls, the opioid-dependent fathers reported greater prevalence of physical, sexual, and psychological aggression directed at the mother of their youngest biological child over the course of the relationship. They also reported more frequent physical, sexual, and
