Towards Migraine-Event Prediction Using Continuous Long-Term Biometric Sensor Data.

Migraine is a common chronic headache disorder characterizsed by episodes of moderate to severe headaches, resulting in a large personal- and societal burden. To address this, we implemented a mobile app solution aimed at enhancing continuous data collection and increasing data coverage for the Empatica E4 biometric sensor device. Our ultimate goal is to use this system in a future migraine event prediction system. In our initial study, three participants wore the E4 device for eight days and were interviewed about their experience. Main user-experience feedback included the need for more freq

Acceptability of a mobile sensing application to characterize community integration among homeless-experienced veterans.

Mobile sensing applications that collect active, Ecological Momentary Assessment data, and passive, Global Positioning System data provide reliable, longitudinal assessments of community integration. Ensuring their acceptability by vulnerable populations is warranted. Acceptability-related perceptions of a mobile sensing application were gathered via focus groups with homeless-experienced Veterans with serious mental illness (n = 19) and individual interviews with providers (n = 5) to inform subsequent application tailoring and testing. Rapid assessment generated structured summaries and matri

Lower limb prosthetic users' activity classification through real-world inertial sensing.

The prescription of lower limb prosthetics relies heavily on the assigned K-level. K-level assessment has been criticised for subjectivity and variability, potentially leading to inappropriate component selection and poorer functional outcomes. This study presents an original methodology for objectively determining activity levels from inertial sensor data, developed through rigorous data collection on 20 amputees who walked on various types of outdoor terrain (flat ground, stairs, ramp, grass/uneven/unstable surfaces), with and without a walking aid. Advanced machine learning algorithms were

Socio-economic assessment of dog population management systems: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Dog Population Management (DPM) systems primarily aim to reduce the free-roaming dog population, improve the health and welfare of humans and dogs, and foster their peaceful coexistence. A key challenge to resource allocation and evidence-based policy making in DPM is the rare evaluation of the associated socio-economic impacts. This scoping review identifies, maps, and summarizes published parameters and methods on the socio-economic aspect of DPM systems. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, and with a protocol registered on the Open Science Framework, this review explore

Level of satisfaction and sexual and reproductive health needs of deaf persons in Ghana: a sequential explanatory mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: The intersection between deafness and culture in sub-Saharan African contexts such as Ghana has culminated in restricted access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. While some attention has been given to the barriers faced by deaf persons in accessing SRH services, discussion of their needs and satisfaction with SRH services is at an embryonic stage. This lends support to the use of sequential mixed-method study design to assess the level of satisfaction and SRH needs of deaf persons. METHODS: This study was guided by explanatory sequential mixed-method study design.

Treatment for sialorrhea (excessive saliva) in people with motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive, neurodegenerative condition which may cause dysphagia, as well as limb weakness, dysarthria, emotional lability and respiratory failure. Since normal salivary production is 0.5 to 1.5 litres daily, loss of salivary clearance due to dysphagia leads to salivary pooling and sialorrhea, often resulting in distress and inconvenience to patients. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review evidence on treatment of sialorrhea in MND, including medications, radiotherapy and surgery. SEARCH STRATEGY: We se

Self-harm and Violence Presenting to Emergency Care Registry (SAVER) project: protocol for a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Intentional injuries can be broadly classified into those that are self-inflicted (eg, suicide, self-harm), and those that are inflicted by others (eg, homicide, assault). Many risk factors are the same for all intentional injuries. It is widely accepted that there needs to be a public health approach to self-harm and interpersonal violence prevention, including surveillance of presentations to emergency departments. Self-harm and interpersonal violence are important causes of morbidity and mortality in Wales. Interpersonal violence surveillance is already operationalised in Wale
