Detection of oedema on optical coherence tomography images using deep learning model trained on noisy clinical data.

PURPOSE: To meet the demands imposed by the continuing growth of the Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patient population, automation of follow-ups by detecting retinal oedema using deep learning might be a viable approach. However, preparing and labelling data for training is time consuming. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of training a convolutional neural network (CNN) to accurately detect retinal oedema on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of AMD patients with labels derived directly from clinical treatment decisions, without extensive preprocessing or relabellin

Individualized correction for maternal weight in calculating the risk of chromosomal abnormalities with first-trimester screening data.

AIM: In the algorithm developed by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) Germany designed to evaluate the findings of routine first-trimester screening, the false-positive rate (FPR) was determined for the entire study group without stratification by maternal weight. Based on the data received from the continuous audit we were able to identify an increase in the FPR for the weight-related subgroups of patients, particularly for patients with extremely high body weights. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that the variability of the FPR can be reduced through adjusting the concentrations of

Detection challenges of temporal encephaloceles in epilepsy: A retrospective analysis.

Temporal encephaloceles (TEs) are herniations of cerebral parenchyma through structural defects in the floor of the middle cranial fossa. They are a relatively common, but only relatively recently identified potential cause of drug-resistant epilepsy. Uncontrolled epilepsy is associated with many negative long term health consequences including a heightened risk of death. The most effective treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy is surgery. One of the most predictive factors associated with successful surgery is identification of an abnormality on imaging. However, TEs can be difficult to detec

An automatic detection method of cerebral aneurysms in time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography images based on attention 3D U-Net.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by ruptured cerebral aneurysm often leads to fatal consequences. However, if the aneurysm can be found and treated during asymptomatic periods, the probability of rupture can be greatly reduced. At present, time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography is one of the most commonly used non-invasive screening techniques for cerebral aneurysm, and the application of deep learning technology in aneurysm detection can effectively improve the screening effect of aneurysm. Existing studies have found that three-dimensional features play an important role in

Charge-Engineered Polyglycerol Nanodiamonds for Enhanced Intestinal Retention and NV Spin Imaging in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Surface condition critically influences the biological labeling and performance of nanodiamond (ND) quantum sensors hosting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins. Polyglycerol (PG) grafting improves colloidal stability and suppresses nonspecific biomolecular adsorption; however, it can also reduce intestinal retention, making sufficient ND loading a key challenge for in vivo optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) imaging. Here, we introduce PG-grafted NDs with different terminal groups, -COOH, OSO3Na, and NH2, to investigate charge-dependent biocompatibility for whole-intestinal ODMR imaging in Ca

A hypersensitive neuromorphic airflow sensor inspired by vision-compensatory scorpion mechanoreceptors for respiratory pattern analysis.

Efficient acquisition of spatial airflow information is vital for organisms to orient within complex environments and detect predators. For scorpions with degraded vision, specialized mechanosensory trichobothria provide a crucial vision-compensatory mechanism, enabling hypersensitive perception of subtle airflow fluctuations. Inspired by this evolutionary adaptation, we present a biomimetic neuromorphic airflow sensor (BNAS) integrating a bioinspired lever-amplification structure with a pressure-induced ionic enrichment mechanism. This synergistic design inherits the hypersensitive anemosensa

Retrospective estimate of COVID-19 infections in nine Colombian cities in 2020.

COVID-19 led to a pandemic in 2020, which officially arrived in Colombia on 6 March 2020. As in other parts of the world, the spread of the virus was underestimated due to the lack of diagnostic tests and follow-up protocols. The present study estimates the number of daily cases of COVID-19 infection compatible with theoretical knowledge of the disease, seroprevalence studies, and records of daily deaths due to the disease. To this end, the REMEDID (Retrospective Methodology to Estimate Daily Infections from Deaths) algorithm was applied in nine Colombian cities. On average, official records d

Accurate detection of tumor clonality and ongoing expansion mode from genomic data.

Recent evidence shows that despite considerable effort, currently available algorithms for estimating intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH) remain limited. We developed DECODE (Deciphering Cancer Origin from DNA Evolution), a novel mutation clustering method that incorporates the impact of sample-specific sequencing coverage and mutation calling biases. On synthetic data, DECODE outperformed existing methods across multiple clonality metrics and accurately detected and characterized the neutral tail in the site frequency spectrum (SFS), which encodes the tumor's ongoing expansion mode. In acute myel

Novel surveillance design exploiting network analysis for efficient, rapid detection of emerging Clostridioides difficile strains.

Whole genome sequencing is being introduced in England to support national surveillance of key hospital-acquired pathogens, starting with Clostridioides difficile, to facilitate novel strain identification and enable timely interventions. However sequencing capacity is limited. Symptomatic and asymptomatic patients attending multiple hospitals can act as inter-facility transmission vectors; here we therefore identify the empirical network of shared patients from analysing national admission data and simulate spread of a hypothetical novel strain. Algorithmically optimising detection, incorpora

Interpretable Artificial Intelligence for Analysing Changes in Gases in the Uterine Environment of Cows According to Physiological Structures in the Ovary.

The objective of the present study was to examine the relationship between the gases in a cow's uterine environment and its ovarian physiological structures using the sunflower optimisation algorithm (SFOA) deployed in a device called Metrisör, developed by our project team. A total of 500 uteruses obtained from slaughtered cows served as the experimental sample. Gas measurements were taken from 489 uteruses with no clinical metritis or microbiological growth. Additionally, the diameters of the corpus luteum and follicles in the ovaries were measured using callipers. These results were then an

Ppb-Level Photoacoustic Detection of Chloroform Using Four-Microphone Array.

The photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) system commonly enhances the efficiency of optical-acoustic-electrical energy conversion by increasing the laser power, optimizing the resonance characteristics of the photoacoustic cell (PAC), and improving the sensitivity of acoustic sensors. However, conventional systems using a single-microphone or a dual-microphone differential setup for point sampling of the photoacoustic signal fail to account for its spatial distribution, leading to a loss of spatial gain. Drawing on microphone array theory derived from sonar technology, this study, for the first ti

Four-channel carbon dot fluorescent sensor array with a pattern recognition approach for the discrimination and quantification of rifamycin antibiotics.

A four -channel fluorescent sensor array was developed for the detection of rifamycin antibiotics (RFs), which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. This sensor array was composed of two synthetic carbon dots (B1 and S1) and two additional sensors (B2 and S2), which were derived from the mixture of B1 and S1 with chromium ions (Cr3⁺), respectively. The distinct interactions between individual sensors and specific RFs produced varying fluorescence quenching responses. These differential optical signals, when analyzed through a pattern recognition algorithm, enabled the identification of five distinct
