Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is considered to be an uncommon cardiac anomaly, carrying a very high rate of mortality. After treatment, the prognosis is excellent. Thus, it is important to make a timely diagnosis and clarify the anatomical details of the SVA. Here, we report a right SVA with dissection into the interventricular septum, with bulging and incomplete rupture into the left outflow tract. The SVA was evaluated using echocardiography (transoesophageal, transthoracic, and three-dimensional echocardiography) and cardiac computed tomography (CT), especially three-dimensional reconstr

BACKGROUND: Reintubation is a serious adverse respiratory event after Stanford type A aortic dissection surgery (AADS), however, published studies focused on reintubation after AADS are very limited worldwide. The objectives of the current study were to establish an early risk prediction model for reintubation after AADS and to clarify its relationship with short-term and long-term prognosis.
METHODS: Patients undergoing AADS between 2016-2019 in a single institution were identified and divided into two groups based on whether reintubation was performed. Independent predictors were identified

OBJECTIVE: Morphological risk factors for the rupture of intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (IVADAs) have not been well characterized. In this study, we aim to identify morphological characteristics associated with IVADA rupture.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 249 consecutive patients with single IVADAs (31 ruptured and 218 unruptured) admitted to Beijing Tiantan Hospital between January 2016 and December 2020. Various morphological parameters were measured using three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography images. Univariate and multivariate logistic regr

Foreign body (FB) fully embedded in the gastrointestinal tissue forming a buried FB is rare, characterized by deceiving endoscopic appearances, e.g., erosion, ulceration, or subepithelial lesion. Conventional endoscopic removal is challenging in this circumstance under which surgery is usually indicated. We reported a gastric buried FB that treated via endoscopic submucosal dissection.

BACKGROUND: The mortality of acute aortic dissection (AD) can reach 65~70%. However, it is challenging to follow the progress of AD formation. The purpose of this work was to observe the process of dissection development using a novel tear-embedded silicone phantom.
METHODS: Silicone phantoms were fabricated by embedding a torn area and primary tear feature on the inner layer. CT scanning and laser lightening were conducted to observe the variations in thickness and volume of the true lumen (TL) and false lumen (FL) during development.
RESULTS: The model with a larger interlayer adhesion dam

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Emerging evidence has demonstrated that abnormal body composition may potentiate the development of frailty, whereas little work focuses on the role of divergent adipose tissue. Therefore, we aimed to determine the potential contribution of adipose tissue distribution to multidimensional frailty in decompensated cirrhosis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study. Divergent adipose tissues were assessed by computed tomography-derived subcutaneous adipose tissue index (SATI), visceral adipose tissue index (VATI) and total adipose tissue index (TATI), respectively

Modified xanthan produced by xanthan lyase has broad application prospects in the food industry. However, the catalytic performance of xanthan lyase still needs to be improved through rational design. To address this problem, in this work, the glycosylation and its influences on the catalytic performance of a xanthan lyase (EcXly), which was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, were reported. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the N599 site of EcXly was modified by a single N-glycan chain. Based on sequence alignment and three-dimensional

INTRODUCTION: The examination of morphological alterations in tissues is fundamental in Pathology. Traditional training in gross dissection has several limitations, including the risk of transmissible diseases, formaldehyde exposure and limited specimen availability. We describe a teaching method using anatomical simulators.
METHODS: Liquid silicone-based artisan neoplastic anatomical models were used in conjunction with clinical scenarios. Eighty-five medical students participated in a gross dissection experience and were asked to complete a feedback questionnaire. Additionally, a workshop w

Morphological study of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), a specialised peripheral synapse formed between a lower motor neuron and skeletal muscle fibre, has significantly contributed to the understanding of synaptic biology and neuromuscular disease pathogenesis. Rodent NMJs are readily accessible, and research into conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) has relied heavily on experimental work in these small mammals. However, given that nerve length dependency is an important feature of many peripheral neurop

Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) is a life-threatening medical condition associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Important mechanisms underlying AAD are the dysregulation of vascular homeostasis and adverse remodeling. Vascular homeostasis maintains normal physiological function. Various physical, chemical, biological, and other internal or external environmental changes dysregulate vascular homeostasis, leading to vascular degeneration and aggravated aortic injury. This process is dependent on the communication between homeostatic mechanisms and the extracellular environment,

OBJECTIVES: Synchronous aortic dissection (AD) with involvement of pre-existing infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are fortunately rare. Extension of the dissection flap to involve the aneurysm is particularly dangerous with pressurization of the false lumen within a diseased aortic wall. The aim of this article is to present a unique case of an acute AD with extension to involve a large AAA in a patient with an underlying connective tissue disorder.
METHODS: A 24-year-old male Marfan syndrome patient with prior type A dissection repair presented with a descending thoracic AD and a

Extracranial vertebral artery dissection is a cerebrovascular disease that occurs most commonly in young people. A 32-year-old man experienced sudden cervical pain and was diagnosed with left vertebral artery dissection after arterial changes were identified by ultrasonography. The reduction in the size of an intramural hematoma in the left vertebral artery and in the peak systolic velocity were evaluated over time. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and cerebral angiography are generally performed to diagnose and follow-up extracranial vertebral artery dissection; however, carot

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of aortic root preservation versus aortic root replacement (ARR) after acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) repair.
METHODS: In this observational study of consecutive aortic surgeries between 2007 and 2021, patients with ATAAD were identified via a prospectively maintained institutional database and were stratified by root preservation versus ARR (including valve-sparing and complete ARR). Kaplan-Meier survival estimation and multivariable Cox regression analysis were performed.
RESULTS: Among the 601 patients underwent aortic arch reconstruction for ATA

Since the introduction of transanal endoscopic microsurgery, local excision of "early" rectal lesions has offered the possibility to reduce the invasiveness of treatment for the limited disease. Flexible endoscopy techniques allow today different alternatives consisting of endoscopic mucosal resection or endoscopic submucosal dissection. The first is a straightforward and relatively easy technique, but it prevents a correct pathological staging of the lesion due to fragmentation and the verification of disease-free margins. The second relies on operators' audacity depending on their increasing

PURPOSE: To describe snare-assisted vessel targeting to selectively overcome a dissection in the iliac bifurcation and gain antegrade access to the hypogastric artery (HA).
TECHNIQUE: The technique is demonstrated in a 64-year-old woman with an asymptomatic Crawford type III thoracoabdominal aneurysm. A 2-stage endovascular repair, consisting of a thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and a branched endovascular aortic repair was planned. In the control angiography after TEVAR, a disrupted plaque with consequent dissection in the right iliac bifurcation was detected. The perfusion of th

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) caused by a ruptured vertebral artery (VA) dissecting aneurysm (DA) under severe COVID-19 treatment, and discuss the potential relationships.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman with COVID-19 fell into severe pneumonia needing mechanical ventilation at 10 days post-onset (day 10). The patient had no risk factors for DA or stroke other than COVID-19 infection. At day 17 when weaning ventilatory management, her systolic blood pressure was transiently elevated, and her consciousness did not recover thereafter. Computed tomograp

OBJECTIVE: Neomedia has been frequently used for aortic root repair in acute type A aortic dissection. We aimed to determine the efficacy and necessity of neomedia during acute type A aortic dissection root repair.
METHODS: From January 2010 to February 2021, 308 patients with acute type A aortic dissection underwent aortic root repair with neomedia (n = 132) or without neomedia (n = 176). Of these, 121 matched pairs were identified using propensity score matching based on age, sex, coronary artery disease, preoperative renal failure, acute stroke, prior cardiac surgery, cardiogenic shock, co
