Tolerance and safety of 45S5 bioactive glass used in obliteration procedures during middle ear surgery: Preliminary results.

OBJECTIVE: Otologists face many disadvantages after extensive mastoid drilling and canal wall down technique in cholesteatoma surgery. Mastoid and epitympanic cavity obliterations or reconstructions after canal wall down procedure using bioactive glass seem to be an interesting solution to overcome some of these disadvantages. Bioactive glass offers many benefits including the availability when there are no sufficient autologous materials for obliteration, its antibacterial activity in chronic infected ear and decreasing the recidivism of cholesteatoma. The objective of this study is to evalua

Exposure to blast shock waves via the ear canal induces deficits in vestibular afferent function in rats.

The ears are air-filled structures that are directly impacted during blast exposure. In addition to hearing loss and tinnitus, blast victims often complain of vertigo, dizziness and unsteady posture, suggesting that blast exposure induces damage to the vestibular end organs in the inner ear. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. In this report, single vestibular afferent activity and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were investigated before and after exposure to blast shock waves (∼20 PSI) delivered into the left external ear canals of anesthetized rats. Single vestibula

Effect of Terpenoids and Flavonoids Isolated from Baccharis conferta Kunth on TPA-Induced Ear Edema in Mice.

In this study, we isolated from the aerial parts of Baccharis conferta Kunth (i) a new neoclerodane, denominated "bacchofertone"; (ii) four known terpenes: schensianol A, bacchofertin, kingidiol and oleanolic acid; and (iii) two flavonoids: cirsimaritin and hispidulin. All structures were identified by an exhaustive analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS). Extracts from aerial parts were screened for anti-inflammatory activity in the mice ear edema model of 12-O-tetradecanoylforbol-13-acetate mice. Dichloromethane extract (BcD) exhibited 78.5 ± 0.72% inhibition

Ear asymmetry in Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus): Two phases of asymmetrical development of the squamoso-occipital wing.

Ear asymmetry is an adaptive characteristic present in the order of owls (Strigiformes). It developed independently up to seven times in this taxon and is accompanied by morphological adaptations in bones or soft tissues around or at the ear openings. Within all strigiform species, the Boreal or Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus) possesses a particularly complex bilateral ear asymmetry that results from modifications of the neurocranium and some cartilaginous elements. While the ear asymmetry in adult birds has been described in detail, data on its development is scarce. Here we describe the d

Auricular suppurative perichondritis secondary to exclusive endoscopic ear surgery for tympanoplasty: A case report and literature review.

Endoscope is an innovative method for otologists in middle ear surgery. Many previous studies have confirmed the safety and efficiency of the endoscopic technique, as a reliable therapeutic option with very low complication rates, clearly supporting the use of endoscopy in ear surgery. Auricular suppurative perichondritis secondary to exclusive endoscopic ear surgery for tympanoplasty is an extremely rare type of those without any previously reported cases. In this report, we describe the course of auricular suppurative perichondritis of a 55-year-old woman. The patient was ultimately healed t

Round window and promontory movements during bone conduction with different middle ear conditions in Thiel embalmed specimens.

BACKGROUND: Thiel conservation is mainly based on a watery solution of salts. We have shown that bone conduction (BC) evokes motion in normal middle ears of Thiel embalmed specimens that is comparable to the motion for other cadaveric models. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether promontory and round window (RW) motion identifies differences in BC transmission for different middle ear conditions. METHODS: We investigated the conditions of mobile ossicle chain, cement-fixed stapes and stapedectomy in seven ears. A retroauricular bone anchored hearing system provided BC stimulation. The motion

Effects of Intradermal Radiofrequency Treatment and Intense Pulsed Light Therapy in an Acne-induced Rabbit Ear Model.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition that can have psychologically deleterious effects. Since current treatments carry the risks of antibiotic resistance or teratogenicity, novel treatment modalities are under investigation. Our study investigated the efficacy of intradermal radiofrequency treatment (RF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) in the treatment of acne vulgaris in a rabbit ear model. We evaluated the effectiveness of IPL, RF, and a combination treatment on cultured Cuticobacterium acnes strains in an induced rabbit ear model, according to clinical outcomes as well as histological and imm

Case Report: Case report: A rare case of middle-ear Rhabdomyosarcoma in a 4-year-old boy.

We present a rare case of a four-year-old boy with a botyroid embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the right middle ear. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignancy which is thought to originate from embryonic mesenchymal cells of striated skeletal muscle.  It is a disease primarily of children and is exceptionally rare in parameningeal regions.  The diagnosis is often delayed and easily misdiagnosed as aural polyp. Therefore, advanced disease is common at the time of diagnosis.  A four-year-old boy presented with a four-month history of recurrent left ear blood and pus discharge, otalgia and fevers

Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF) Modulates Epidermal Progenitor Cell Kinetics through Activation of p63 in Middle Ear Cholesteatoma.

The basal stem/progenitor cell maintains homeostasis of the epidermis. Progressive disturbance of this homeostasis has been implicated as a possible cause in the pathogenesis of epithelial disease, such as middle ear cholesteatoma. In many cases of stem/progenitor cell regulation, the importance of extracellular signals provided by the surrounding cells is well-recognized. Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is a mesenchymal-cell-derived paracrine growth factor that specifically participates in skin homeostasis; however, the overexpression of KGF induces middle ear cholesteatoma. In this study, t

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of manual and powered irrigation of the middle ear using saline or 1% baby shampoo to treat biofilm-forming bacterial middle ear infections. BACKGROUND: Biofilms play a major role in recalcitrant otitis media and are challenging to treat. Many therapeutic strategies have been attempted and the role of topical therapies is still being investigated. Topical irrigation using saline or 1% baby shampoo and the use of a hydrodebrider have been investigated in biofilms involved in chronic rhinosinusitis and their role within the middle ear is yet to be d

Inner ear and retrocochlear pathology on magnetic resonance imaging for sudden and progressive asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: In sudden and asymmetrical progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is required to evaluate retrocochlear pathology and, with recent advances in MRI techniques, inner ear pathology. Given the limited literature regarding inner ear pathology associated with SNHL, we aimed to assess the incidence of retrocochlear and inner ear pathology, and congenital malformation on MRI in sudden SNHL (SSNHL) and progressive SNHL. METHODS: A total of 987 acoustic neuroma (AN) protocol MRI internal acoustic meatus studies performed at our institution to invest

Internationally adopted children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate: Middle ear findings and hearing during childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Adopted children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate form a diverse group of patients. Due to increased age at palatal repair, adopted children have a higher risk of velopharyngeal insuffiency and poor speech outcome. Delayed palate repair may also lead to longer lasting Eustachian tube dysfunction. Decreased function of the Eustachian tube causes otitis media with effusion and recurrent acute otitis media, which can lead to other middle ear problems and hearing loss. METHODS: One-hundred-and-thirty-two adopted children treated by the Cleft palate team in Wilhelmina Children's Hospi

Anatomical and morphometrical study of middle ear ossicles in 2 to 3-month-old Makouei sheep fetuses.

The middle ear ossicles are important due to transmission of sound to the inner ear leading to sound understanding. The aim of present study was to determine the anatomical and morphometrical aspects of middle ear ossicles in Makouei sheep fetuses. For this experimental study, eight sheep fetuses at the age of 2 to 3 months were provided from public slaughterhouse; their middle ear ossicles were removed from tympanic cavity subsequently and assessed anatomically using stereomicroscope. For statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test were used. The results showed that rostral

Middle Ear Histopathology Following Magnetic Delivery to the Cochlea of Prednisolone-loaded Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Rats.

Delivery of therapy to the cochlea is a challenge and limits the efficacy of therapies meant to treat hearing loss, reverse tinnitus, and protect hearing from chemotherapy regimens. Magnetic injection is a technique that uses magnetic fields to inject nanoparticles from the middle ear into the cochlea, where they can then elute therapy to treat hearing disorders. To evaluate the safety of this treatment in the middle ear, 30 rats were subdivided into 6 groups and treated by single or multiple intratympanic injections of saline, prednisolone, nanoparticles, or nanoparticles loaded with predniso

Influence of Oral Probiotic Streptococcus salivarius K12 on Ear and Oral Cavity Health in Humans: Systematic Review.

Traditionally, probiotics are linked to the good health of the intestine and most clinical studies focus on that field. Evidence of oral probiotic use for ear and oral cavity disease prevention with impact on human health is limited. This work reviews existing studies and literature on Streptococcus salivarius K12 as an oral probiotic and effects of S. salivarius K12 on human ear and oral cavity human health. The studies were accessed via database searches: MEDLINE, PubMed, and Elsevier. The search included/focused on/encompassed publications from 2003 to 2016 with keywords related to K12 Stre
