Tranexamic acid in hip fracture patients: a protocol for a randomised, placebo controlled trial on the efficacy of tranexamic acid in reducing blood loss in hip fracture patients.

INTRODUCTION: There is a high incidence of blood transfusion following hip fractures in elderly patients. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has proven efficacy in decreasing blood loss in general trauma patients as well as patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery. A randomised controlled trial will measure the effect of TXA in a population of patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. METHODS: This is a double-blinded, randomised placebo-controlled trial. Patients admitted through the emergency room that are diagnosed with an intertrochanteric or femoral neck fracture will be eligible for enrolmen

Total hip arthroplasty for vascular necrosis of the femoral head in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: a midterm follow-up study of 28 hips in 24 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is one of the most frequently reported complications in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and often requires total hip arthroplasty (THA). Our objective was to analyze the perioperative management, technical problems, clinical outcomes, and complications associated with THA in patients with SLE. METHODS: A total of 28 total hip arthroplasties performed for 24 patients with SLE, including 19 women and 5 men with a mean age of 38.8 years performed from 1998 to 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. SLE disease activity index and ASA

Cemented total hip arthroplasty with subtrochanteric femoral shortening transverse osteotomy for severely dislocated hips: outcome with a 3- to 10-year follow-up period.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for the treatment of severe dislocation of the hip is a technically demanding procedure. In most previous reports, techniques and clinical outcomes using cementless prostheses are widely reported, but there have been few reports on the technique and outcomes using cemented prostheses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of a cemented THA with a simultaneous subtrochanteric femoral shortening transverse osteotomy in patients with Crowe type III or IV developmental dysplasia of the hip. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 15 hips in 1

Varus derotation osteotomy for the treatment of hip subluxation and dislocation in GMFCS level III to V patients with unilateral hip involvement. Follow-up at skeletal maturity.

PURPOSE: Hip displacement is common in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The risk of hip displacement is related to gross motor function level as graded with the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Most clinicians agree that surgical treatment is indicated for progressive hip subluxation in patients with CP. However, it is unclear whether unilateral bony surgery and musculotenduous release is effective in cases in which the contralateral hip is well seated. The purpose of this study is to describe the fate of the original and the contralateral hip of severely involved patients

Outcome of rotational acetabular osteotomy for early hip osteoarthritis secondary to dysplasia related to femoral head shape: 49 hips followed for 10-17 years.

BACKGROUND: Hip osteoarthritis in Japanese patients is in most cases secondary and purpose to congenital dislocation of the hip or acetabular dysplasia - often associated with a deformed femoral head. Thus, we examined the outcome of rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) procedures in patients with early-stage osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip, and its relationship to femoral head deformity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of RAO procedures in 49 hips of 48 patients (43 females). All patients had radiographic evidence of early-stage o

[Development assessment of a hip ultrasonographic screening program for the early diagnosis of congenital hip dysplasia at the orthopedic university department Homburg/Saar from 1986 to 1990].

The results of the hip ultrasound newborn screening at the orthopaedic department of the University Hospital Homburg/Saar underline the necessity of an early diagnosis of Hip dysplasia already during the first days of life. In the course of the following publication the benefit of using abduction-pants in case of physiological unripe and primary pathological hips is described closely. From October 1985 to December 1990 2317 newborns have been examined by ultrasound. The rate of Hip Dysplasia (type IID, IIg, IIIa) was at 104 hips (2.2%). Clinical striking facts were only found in 46.3% of all p

Predisposing factors for a second fragile hip fracture in a population of 1130 patients with hip fractures, treated at Oulu University Hospital in 2013-2016: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The life-time risk of a second fragile hip fracture is 8.4%, but the risk factors that predispose to a second hip fracture remain unresolved. This study aimed to define risk factors that predisposed patients to a second hip fracture. METHODS: For this retrospective study, we retrieved clinical data on 1130 patients with fragile hip fractures (67.2% female, mean age: 79.3 years) that underwent surgery at the Oulu University Hospital in 2013-2016. These data included the fracture risk assessment score (measured with the FRAX tool), the bone-mass T-score, laboratory values, ambulatory

The association of lumbosacral transitional vertebral anomalies with acetabular dysplasia in adult patients with hip-spine syndrome : a cross-sectional evaluation of a prospective hip registry cohort.

AIMS: Some patients presenting with hip pain and instability and underlying acetabular dysplasia (AD) do not experience resolution of symptoms after surgical management. Hip-spine syndrome is a possible underlying cause. We hypothesized that there is a higher frequency of radiological spine anomalies in patients with AD. We also assessed the relationship between radiological severity of AD and frequency of spine anomalies. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of registry data, 122 hips in 122 patients who presented with hip pain and and a final diagnosis of AD were studied. Two observers anal

Is the economic and social cost of one-stage bilateral hip resurfacing lower than two-stage procedures? Retrospective case-control study of 260 hips.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the economic impact of medical practices and estimates of intra- and extra-hospital costs have an important role in controlling healthcare spending. But few studies of this nature have been done for bilateral surgery in a single operative session. This led us to carry out a health economics study to determine whether (1) bilateral hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) performed in one stage instead of two stages will reduce the health care expenditures (costs of hospitalization, medical leave, rehabilitation), (2) it is equally safe for the patient. Hypothesis One-stage bil

Clinical outcomes and quality of life after total hip arthroplasty in adult patients with a history of infection of the hip in childhood: a mid-term follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty for adult patients with a history of infection of the hip in childhood could be a more technically demanding procedure due to complicated anatomy and the possibility of reinfection. Here, we conducted a mid-term analysis of clinical outcomes in such patients after primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: We reviewed 101 patients (101 hips; 51 men; mean age, 52.3 years) who underwent cementless THA between 2008 and 2015, at a mean of 24 years (range, 11-43) since the resolution of childhood hip infection. Patients were followed up for a mean

Medial Protrusio Technique in Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: A Prospective 6- to 9-Year Follow-Up of 43 Consecutive Patients.

BACKGROUND: The medial protrusio technique may be used during total hip arthroplasty (THA) on patients with developmental dysplasia. However, studies have yet to determine whether a cementless cup can be sufficiently stable to withstand loading forces. This study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of this technique. Furthermore, we sought to determine the relationship between the rate of medial protrusion and the incidence of cup loosening. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients (43 hips) underwent cementless THA between April 2006 and March 2009 by using the medial protrusio techn
