BACKGROUND: The effect of concurrent (active) and treated hookworm infections on the immunogenicity of vaccination with the recombinant fusion protein Ay-Ancylostoma-secreted protein 2 was analyzed in the Golden Syrian hamster.
METHODS: Hamsters were infected with the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum and vaccinated with the recombinant protein, with Quil A used as adjuvant. As controls, hookworm-infected hamsters were treated with the anthelmintic drug pyrantel pamoate before vaccination. Naive hamsters (i.e., those with neither previous hookworm infections nor treatment) were also vaccinated.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Severe alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is associated with high mortality. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) has been demonstrated to play an important role in its pathophysiology.
METHODS: Twelve patients with biopsy-confirmed AH and a Maddrey discriminant factor >32 were treated with a single infusion of the anti-TNF monoclonal antibody Infliximab at a dose of 5mg/kg body weight. Serial measurements were made for various cytokines using specific enzyme-linked immunoassays (ELISA). In four patients, liver biopsy samples were available pretreatment and on day+28 of therapy.

We have begun an autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) treatment protocol for patients with myeloma who achieve a minimal disease (less than 10% marrow plasma cells) status. Sites of bony disease are irradiated before BMT. Melphalan 70 mg/m2 on days 1 and 2 is followed by 1200 rads total-body irradiation administered in fractionated doses over 3 d.
