Exploring the impact of trauma-adapted yoga in forensic psychiatry.

The specialized field of forensic psychiatry deals with the care of criminal offenders who suffer from severe mental disorders. As this field is positioned at the intersection of illness, crime, and security, it poses complex challenges. While high-quality clinical studies in forensic psychiatry settings are limited, recent investigations have suggested yoga as a complementary clinical tool within correctional environments. This report of a quasi-experimental study examines the impact of a 10-week trauma-adapted yoga intervention on mental health, antisocial and aggressive behaviors, pain perc

Can dissociative amnesia be a residual symptom of prolonged complex post-traumatic stress disorder?

BACKGROUND: Dissociative amnesia, a disorder characterized by impairments in multiple memory areas, is frequently associated with trauma. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is marked by mood dysregulation, negative self-concept, and impaired interpersonal relationships, in addition to the classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship between CPTSD and dissociative amnesia, as well as whether CPTSD should be considered a dissociative subtype, remains uncertain in the literature. Individuals diagnosed with CPTSD tend to exhibit higher levels of dissociat

[Splenectomy via the Transdiaphragmatic Approach].

The spleen is one of the most commonly injured organ in blunt traumas to the chest and abdomen. Splenic injury can be a serious complication of fracture of the left 9th to 11th rib. The authors present a case report of a 65-year-old male patient with a blunt trauma to the left chest and abdomen, diagnosed with multiple left rib fractures, left hemothorax and splenic injury with a small subcapsular hematoma with no signs of active splenic bleeding. Due to hemodynamic instability and a large volume of blood loss via the chest drain, the patient was indicated for emergency left thoracotomy. A per

Percutaneous transjugular approach without arterial monitoring for the treatment of a direct carotid-cavernous fistula with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) because of COL3A1 mutations is a rare inherited collagen vascular disease associated with spontaneous arterial dissections, aneurysms, vessel rupture, and organ rupture. A direct carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is the most common central nervous system vascular anomaly in vEDS; however, its treatment is challenging due to extremely fragile arteries and veins. OBSERVATIONS: A 22-year-old woman presented with pulsatile tinnitus and mild diplopia. CCF formation without trauma, cervical dissecting aneurysms, thin skin, and multiple ligament tears

Open Reduction Internal fixation of Incarcerated Greater Tuberosity Avulsion Fracture: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries of the upper extremity. These fractures are frequent in the elderly population due to low-energy trauma and in the younger patient secondary to high-energy trauma that is associated with shoulder dislocations. Proximal humerus fractures are frequently classified according to the Neer classification which is defined by the number of segments and the amount displacement required to define the fracture as displaced. Segments include the greater tuberosity (GT), the lesser tuberosity, the humeral head, and the humeral shaft. Fractures ar

Co-occurrence Patterns of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important social and public health problem, affecting millions of women worldwide. Violence in a relationship can occur in multiple ways, including physical violence, psychological aggression, and sexual violence. In this study, utilizing data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), we comprehensively investigate the interplay between physical, psychological, and sexual violence, in terms of their co-occurrence patterns, their relation to trauma symptoms and overall health of victims. For this purpose, we perform network anal

Biomechanics considerations in the treatment of double traumatic non-contiguous subaxial cervical lesions.

Double traumatic non-contiguous lesions of the subaxial cervical region are a rare event mostly caused by multiple, simultaneous or rapidly consecutive high-energy-impact traumas. The modality of treatment chosen for these lesions must be related to local lower cervical spine biomechanics. We present the case of a 59 year-old patient who suffered a subaxial cervical spine double fracture-dislocation following a complex-dynamic trauma. Radiological imaging displayed a C4-C5 and C7-T1 fracture-dislocation with cord signal intensity abnormalities. This patient showed a complete neurological defic

A methodology for assessing deployment trauma and its consequences in OEF/OIF/OND veterans: The TRACTS longitudinal prospective cohort study.

Many US veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq have multiple physical and psychiatric problems. A major focus of research has been on determining the effects of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), but mTBI is rarely diagnosed in the absence of co-occurring conditions such as blast exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, etc. These potentially interactive psychological and physical conditions produce complex patterns of cognitive, psychological, and physical symptoms that impede civilian reintegration and complicate efficient and effective treatment planning. PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and trauma: An examination of the influence of trauma type on comorbidity using a nationally representative sample.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are highly comorbid (Collimore et al., 2010). Trauma may present a shared environmental factor contributing to the development of comorbidity; however, existent research has been hampered by use of restrictive samples and limitations in the range of traumas investigated. The current study examines the relationship between a broad range of potentially traumatic events and the comorbidity between PTSD and SAD using Wave 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (n=34,653). Different types of combat experiences and associated symptoms in OEF and OIF National Guard and reserve veterans.

OBJECTIVE: It is well established that exposure to combat is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The experiences of military personnel serving in combat zones vary widely however, leading to increased attention to the impact of different types of combat trauma. The present study examined the relationships among 3 conceptually based categories of combat exposure with 4 PTSD symptom clusters (reexperiencing, avoidance, numbing, and hyperarousal) and symptoms of guilt, depression, and anxiety. METHOD: Participants were 206 National Guard and Reserve members who had recently r

Nasoseptal flap closure of traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leaks.

The vascularized nasoseptal flap has become a principal reconstructive technique for the closure of endonasal skull base surgery defects. Despite its potential utility, there has been no report describing the use of the modern nasoseptal flap to repair traumatic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and documenting the outcomes of this application. Specific concerns in skull base trauma include septal trauma with disruption of the flap pedicle, multiple leak sites, and issues surrounding persistent leaks after traumatic craniotomy. We performed a retrospective case series review of 14 patients who u

Untangling the psychiatric comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder in a sample of flood survivors.

This report empirically examines multiple explanations for the high rates of psychiatric comorbidity seen with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One hundred sixty-two St. Louis area survivors of the 1993 Great Midwest Floods were interviewed a few months after the flood subsided using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) and its Disaster Supplement to assess psychiatric history relative to PTSD and five other psychiatric disorders. Thirty-five subjects (23%) met criteria for PTSD related to the flood. PTSD was frequently comorbid with other disorders. Seventeen subjects (10%) developed

Cumulative trauma disorder risk for children using computer products: results of a pilot investigation with a student convenience sample.

OBJECTIVES: Cumulative trauma disorder is a major health problem for adults. Despite a growing understanding of adult cumulative trauma disorder, however, little is known about the risks for younger populations. This investigation examined issues related to child/adolescent computer product use and upper body physical discomfort. METHODS: A convenience sample of 212 students, grades 1-12, was interviewed at their homes by a college-age sibling or relative. One of the child's parents was also interviewed. A 22-item questionnaire was used for data-gathering. Questionnaire items included frequen

Impact of urethral injury management on the treatment and outcome of concurrent pelvic fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple treatment options exist for concurrent posterior urethral trauma and pelvic fractures. Because of the increased risk of contamination, the surgical repair of fractures may be prohibited by suprapubic urologic catheters. To characterize the incidence and long-term outcomes of these management conflicts, we reviewed our experience with concomitant pelvic fractures and posterior urethral injuries. METHODS: For a 42-month period, 61 patients with concurrent lower urinary tract and pelvic trauma, including 23 with posterior urethral injuries, were retrospectively reviewed for
