Interventions for replacing missing teeth: alveolar ridge preservation techniques for dental implant site development.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone changes following tooth extraction can compromise prosthodontic rehabilitation. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has been proposed to limit these changes and improve prosthodontic and aesthetic outcomes when implants are used. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical effects of various materials and techniques for ARP after tooth extraction compared with extraction alone or other methods of ARP, or both, in patients requiring dental implant placement following healing of extraction sockets. SEARCH METHODS:

Protecting Frontline Health Care Workers from COVID-19 with Hydroxychloroquine Pre-exposure Prophylaxis: A structured summary of a study protocol for a randomised placebo-controlled multisite trial in Toronto, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Primary Objective: To determine if pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with 400mg hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), taken orally once daily reduces microbiologically confirmed COVID-19 among front line health care workers at high risk for SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Secondary Objectives: To compare the following between study arms: adverse events; symptomatic COVID-19; duration of symptomatic COVID-19; days hospitalized attributed to COVID-19; respiratory failure attributable to COVID-19 requiring i) non-invasive ventilation or ii) intubation/mechanical ventilation; mortality attributed to COVID-19,

The effect of waterbirth on neonatal mortality and morbidity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Women have been giving birth in water in many centers across the globe; however, the practice remains controversial. Qualitative studies highlight the benefits that waterbirth confers on the laboring woman, though due to the nature of the intervention, it is not surprising that there are few randomized controlled trials available to inform practice. Much of the criticism directed at waterbirth focuses on the potential impact on the neonate. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to systematically synthesize the best available evidence regarding the effect of waterbirth, comp

Polymer-based restorative outcomes following deep margin elevation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Deep margin elevation (DME), also known as cervical margin relocation or proximal box elevation, has been proposed as a minimally invasive approach for managing subgingival margins and facilitating adhesive placement of indirect restorations. By relocating deep proximal margins coronally, DME improves isolation and enhances bonding procedures. The technique relies primarily on resin-based polymeric materials, including conventional, flowable, bulk-fill, and injectable composites, as well as resin-modified glass ionomer cements. These materials exhibit distinct polymerization behavi

[Ginsenoside Rb3 regulates the phosphorrylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathway to alleviate inflammatory responses and promote osteogenesis in rats with periodontitis].

OBJECTIVES: To explore the promoting effect of ginsenoside Rb3 (Rb3) on osteogenesis in periodontitis environment, and to explain its mechanism. METHODS: Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) were cultured by tissue block method and identified by flow cytometry. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) method and calcein acetoxymethyl ester/propidium iodide staining were used to detect the effect of Rb3 on the viability of hPDLSCs cells. In vitro cell experiments were divided into control group, 10 μg/mL lipopolysaccharides (LPS) group, 10 μg/mL LPS+100 μmol/L Rb3 group and 10 μg/mL LPS+200 μmol/

Effects of targeted clinical examination based on alerts from automated health monitoring systems on herd health and performance of lactating dairy cows.

Our objectives were to compare the proportion of lactating dairy cows diagnosed with health disorders (HD) and herd performance when using a health monitoring program designed to rely primarily but not exclusively on alerts from automated health monitoring (AHM) systems or a health monitoring program based primarily on systematic clinical examinations, milk yield monitoring, and visual observation of cows. In a clinical trial, at ∼30 d before expected parturition, nulliparous and parous Holstein cows, stratified by parity and days in gestation, were randomly assigned to the high-intensity clin

Effects of replacing inorganic salts of trace minerals with organic trace minerals in pre- and postpartum diets on feeding behavior, rumen fermentation, and performance of dairy cows.

Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of complete replacement of supplementary inorganic salts of trace minerals (STM) by organic trace minerals (OTM) in both pre- and postpartum diets on feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation, rumination activity, energy metabolism, and lactation performance in dairy cows. Pregnant cows and heifers (n = 273) were blocked by parity and body condition score and randomly assigned to either STM or OTM diets at 45 ± 3 d before their expected calving date. Both groups received the same diet, except for the source of trace minerals (TM). The STM group was supp

Effect of encouraging awareness of reduced fetal movement and subsequent clinical management on pregnancy outcome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Reduced fetal movement, defined as a decrease in the frequency or strength of fetal movements as perceived by the mother, is a common reason for presentation to maternity care. Observational studies have demonstrated an association between reduced fetal movement and stillbirth and fetal growth restriction related to placental insufficiency. However, individual intervention studies have described varying results. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine whether interventions aimed at encouraging awareness of reduced fetal movement and/or improving its subsequent cl

OBJECTIVE: To establish the workflow of determining the jaw position of repositioning splint with the aid of digital technique, and to evaluate the accuracy of this workflow and compare the accuracy of raising different vertical dimensions in vitro. METHODS: A volunteer was recruited. The data of full-arch scans, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image and ultrasonic jaw motion tracking of the volunteer were acquired. Negative pressure wound therapy for treating leg ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Leg ulcers are open skin wounds that occur between the ankle and the knee that can last weeks, months or even years and are a consequence of arterial or venous valvular insufficiency. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a technology that is currently used widely in wound care and is promoted for use on wounds. NPWT involves the application of a wound dressing to the wound, to which a machine is attached. The machine applies a carefully controlled negative pressure (or vacuum), which sucks any wound and tissue fluid away from the treated area into a canister. OBJECTIVES: To a

A randomised controlled trial of the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different knee prostheses: the Knee Arthroplasty Trial (KAT).

BACKGROUND: In the late 1990s, new developments in knee replacement were identified as a priority for research within the NHS. The newer forms of arthroplasty were more expensive and information was needed on their safety and cost-effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: The Knee Arthroplasty Trial examined the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of four aspects of knee replacement surgery: patellar resurfacing, mobile bearings, all-polyethylene tibial components and unicompartmental replacement. DESIGN: This study comprised a partial factorial, pragmatic, multicentre randomised controlled trial
