Determination of the source areas contributing to regionally high warm season PM2.5 in eastern North America.

An ensemble-trajectory analysis technique known as Quantitative Transport Bias Analysis was applied to determine which geographic areas systematically contributed to above- and below-average fine particle mass (PM2.5) over eastern North America. Six-hour average measurements from 12 rural or suburban locations in eastern North America collected using a tapered element oscillating microbalance were individually associated with corresponding 3-day back-trajectories for the warm seasons (May-September) of 2000 and 2001. Much of the populated areas of northeastern North America were implicated in

Structure Analysis of Gangliosides: Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a powerful technique that is widely used for the mapping and molecular identification of biomolecules directly from the surface of biological samples. Among these biomolecules, gangliosides are complex glycosphingolipids primarily found in the nervous system. They play crucial roles in cell signaling and neurodevelopment and are responsible for many diseases. Label-free mapping and structural analysis of these gangliosides using MSI offer unique insights into their spatial distribution and concentration in healthy and diseased tissues. MSI techniques such as

Inventing a Gay Race: Racial Desire and Queer Colonialism in Hollinghurst's Fiction.

This article offers a sociologically informed analysis of queer racial and spatial politics in Alan Hollinghurst's fiction. Through a close textual analysis of The Swimming-Pool Library, The Line of Beauty, The Folding Star and The Spell, the study reveals how queer spaces, while supposed to be inclusive, indeed reproduce colonial and orientalist exclusive discourses. Nonwhite gay men are represented as feminized, hypersexualised, and subordinate to their white British counterparts, echoing the master-slave dynamic of colonial narratives. Drawing on the works of such theorists as Mercer, Crens

Atf3 controls transitioning in female mitochondrial cardiomyopathy as identified by spatial and single-cell transcriptomics.

Oxidative phosphorylation defects result in now intractable mitochondrial diseases (MD) with cardiac involvement markedly affecting prognosis. The mechanisms underlying the transition from compensation to dysfunction in response to metabolic deficiency remain unclear. Here, we used spatially resolved transcriptomics and single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) on the heart of a patient with mitochondrial cardiomyopathy (MCM), combined with an MCM mouse model with cardiac-specific Ndufs6 knockdown (FS6KD). Cardiomyocytes demonstrated the most heterogeneous expression landscape among cell types

Recent Proceedings of Advanced Electrochemiluminescence Imaging Technology and Applications in Accurate Analysis.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) imaging has emerged as a highly sensitive and spatially resolved bioanalytical technique that bridges electrochemical control and optical microscopy. With its unique surface-confined emission, minimal background noise, and tunable activation, ECL imaging offers distinct advantages over fluorescence and chemiluminescence, especially for cellular and single-particle analysis. In this review, advanced strategies and wireless, multiplexed, and high-throughput bioimaging platforms, such as bipolar electrochemistry, single-electrode electrochemical system, and multiele

Opportunities and challenges of single-cell and spatially resolved genomics methods for neuroscience discovery.

Over the past decade, single-cell genomics technologies have allowed scalable profiling of cell-type-specific features, which has substantially increased our ability to study cellular diversity and transcriptional programs in heterogeneous tissues. Yet our understanding of mechanisms of gene regulation or the rules that govern interactions between cell types is still limited. The advent of new computational pipelines and technologies, such as single-cell epigenomics and spatially resolved transcriptomics, has created opportunities to explore two new axes of biological variation: cell-intrinsic

Epidemiological big data and analytical tools applied in the control programmes on parasitic diseases in China: NIPD's sustained contributions in 70 years.

The analysis of epidemiological data has played an important role for the academic research carried out by the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China CDC, since its foundation in 1950s. Those researches, e.g., the temporal-spatial patterns of disease transmission and the identification of risk factors, have contributed significantly to the national parasitic disease control and elimination programmes in China. With the development and application of epidemiological data analysis in the last decade, all research results improve our understanding of parasitic diseases epidemiology and r

Systematic review and multi-modal meta-analysis of magnetic resonance imaging findings in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: Is more evidence needed?

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DS) is considered to be the most robust genetic model of psychosis. In the last decade, there has been increased interest in the brain abnormalities associated with these genetic changes. Most imaging findings in this population come from small samples. This increases the risk of reporting spurious effects that reflect the idiosyncrasies of each study. Thus, the current work is aimed at identifying whether there are spatially consistent structural and functional brain abnormalities in individuals with 22q11.2 DS through (i) a comprehensive label-based systematic revi

Integrating data on bone modeling and morphological ontogenetic changes of the maxilla in modern humans.

The aim of this work is to assess the association between the patterns of bone modeling and the changes in shape and size of the maxilla along ontogeny in modern humans. The sample analyzed includes an ontogenetic series of 30 individuals from an archeological site from Pampa Grande, northwest of Argentina. The areas of bone resorption and formation were described by histological analysis of bone surfaces and then quantified using spatial statistics. Morphological changes were analyzed by geometric morphometric methods using landmarks and semilandmarks digitized on 3D surfaces obtained from CT

Association of excessive social media use with abnormal white matter integrity of the corpus callosum.

Borrowing from findings regarding other problematic behaviors, we posit that excessive social media use (ESMU) can relate to impaired inter-hemispheric connections. These are often reflected in impaired white matter integrity (decreased fractional anisotropy and increased mean diffusivity) of the corpus callosum. We test this idea with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data from 20 normal social media users with varying degrees of ESMU. The findings of a Regions of Interest analysis focusing on the corpus callosum indicate that ESMU is associated with increased mean diffusivity in the body and sp

The limitations of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for analysis of Yersinia enterocolitica isolates.

This study describes the analysis of 432 isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). PFGE had a high level of discrimination with biotype 1A isolates (Simpson's Diversity Index 0.997), but with the clinically important biotypes 2, 3 and 4, the discriminatory ability of PFGE was so low as to severely limit its usefulness (DI <0.6). For biotypes 2, 3 and 4, 79% or more of isolates of each biotype were of just three different PFGE profiles. Because of this, four known outbreaks of yersiniosis would not have been identified by PFGE analysis. However, a previousl

The prevalence and distribution of Alaria alata, a potential zoonotic parasite, in foxes in Ireland.

The digenean trematode Alaria alata, an intestinal parasite of wild canids is widely distributed in Europe. The recent finding of the mesocercarial life cycle stage in the paratenic wild boar host suggests that it may potentially infect humans Mohl et al. (Parasitol Res 105:1-15, 2009). Over 500 foxes were examined during a wildlife survey for zoonotic diseases in 2009 and 2010. The prevalence of A. alata ranged from 21% to 26% in 2009 and 2010, and the intensity of infection varied, with the majority of foxes having between one and ten trematodes, but a small number of animals had parasitic b

Comparing normal walking and compensated walking: their stability and perturbation resistance. A simulation study.

People usually develop different kinds of compensated gait in response to local function deficits, such as muscle weakness, spasticity in specific muscle groups, or joint stiffness, in order to overcome the falling risk factors. Compensated walking has been analysed empirically in the impaired gait analysis area. However, the compensation could be identified spatially and temporally. The stability and perturbation resistance of compensated walking have not been analysed quantitatively. In this research, a biomimetic human walking simulator was employed to model one individual paraplegic subjec

A national spatial prioritisation framework for the targeted expansion of essential sickle cell disease services across health-facility catchments in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease causes substantial childhood morbidity and premature mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, while access to essential services remains uneven. In Uganda, geographic variation in inherited SCD risk supports spatially targeted service planning. METHODS: We conducted a national facility-linked ecological spatial planning analysis using 280 eligible higher-level public facilities. Populated cells were assigned to the nearest eligible facility within a modelled 60-minute travel-time boundary. Epidemiological context was represented by a study-specific co-risk index combin

Spatial heterogeneity of socio-economic determinants of typhoid/paratyphoid fever in one province in central China from 2015 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever are one of the most criticial public health issues worldwide, especially in developing countries. The incidence of this disease may be closely related to socio-economic factors, but there is a lack of research on the spatial level of relevant determinants of typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever. METHODS: In this study, we took Hunan Province in central China as an example and collected the data on typhoid and paratyphoid incidence and socio-economic factors in 2015-2019. Firstly spatial mapping was made on the disease prevalence, and again using

Aperture-collimated proton LATTICE radiotherapy with a GRID-like entrance pattern: a compact and robust delivery strategy.

Objective.Proton LATTICE radiotherapy (LRT), a form of spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT), delivers a high dose to intratumoral vertices while maintaining low valley dose. Single-field optimization (SFO) is robust for preserving peak-to-valley patterns but results in a high entrance dose. Prior evidence suggests that smaller, more closely spaced high-dose regions may improve the therapeutic ratio. In this work, we propose aperture-collimated proton LRT (AC-LATTICE), which reshapes SFO proton LATTICE fields into narrow GRID-like entrance beamlets to reduce entrance dose while preserving

Detecting Spatiotemporal Patterns of Newly Diagnosed HIV Infection in the China-Myanmar Border Region, 2010 to 2022: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Geospatial analysis plays an essential role in informing targeted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) intervention. The Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Dehong (hereinafter referred to as Dehong), located along the China-Myanmar border in the Yunnan province, has been heavily impacted by HIV infection. Given the complex local epidemic context, particularly frequent cross-border population movement, there is an urgent need to apply spatiotemporal analytical approaches to guiding resource allocation. Existing evidence has demonstrated the substantial spatial variations of newly dia

Recent rapid rise of a permethrin knock down resistance allele in Aedes aegypti in México.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti, the 'yellow fever mosquito', is the primary vector to humans of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses (DENV, YFV), and is a known vector of the chikungunya alphavirus (CV). Because vaccines are not yet available for DENV or CV or are inadequately distributed in developing countries (YFV), management of Ae. aegypti remains the primary option to prevent and control outbreaks of the diseases caused by these arboviruses. Permethrin is one of the most widely used active ingredients in insecticides for suppression of adult Ae. aegypti. In 2007, we documented a replacement m
