Tooth autotransplantation is a procedure in which a donor tooth is transplanted within the same patient's jaw to replace a missing tooth. Donor tooth root morphology and periodontal ligament integrity are key factors influencing success. We report a semi-immediate autotransplantation of a maxillary third molar with a 90° divergent root into a site previously affected by a periapical abscess. After the extraction of the compromised tooth (#15) and removal of the interradicular septum, the site was left to heal to allow soft tissue closure and infection resolution. During this period, CBCT imagi

Introduction and Clinical Significance: Tooth ankylosis is a serious complication that can occur because of the replantation of an avulsed tooth. However, few reports have investigated the follow-up of replanted or ankylosed primary incisors because the replantation of primary teeth is not recommended in the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology. Case Presentation: A boy aged 4 years and 8 months was referred to hospital for further evaluation of the maxillary right primary central incisor. It had been avulsed and replanted 2 years earlier. The tooth was positioned

INTRODUCTION: Tooth autotransplantation is a treatment option that has the potential to restore masticatory function and esthetics to edentulous spaces resulting from extracted teeth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic factors and clinical outcomes for autotransplanted teeth with complete root formation.
METHODS: Patients who had received tooth autotransplantation in the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, Korea, from July 2001 to August 2010 were electronically searched, and a total of 105 cases of autotransplanted teeth me

In a study in the Aegean city of Izmir, Turkey, during the summer of 2002, 2101 patients (1046 boys and 1055 girls) were examined. The examination occurred within the framework of a dental check-up performed at two schools and one pre-school unit. The age span ranged from 3.98 to 24.91 years. Sex, age and present permanent teeth were recorded. Wisdom teeth were excluded. The sequence of tooth eruptions differs significantly in the lower and upper jaw, whereas no significant differences existed when comparing the sides of each jaw. The times of tooth eruption is earlier in females than in males

Orthodontic therapy aims to displace teeth by means of orthodontic appliances. Forces, applied on the teeth, induce remodeling of the alveolar process in upper and lower jaw resulting in a new position of the teeth into both jaws. In this publication an attempt has been made to test a model (dry skull model) which could provide a better understanding of the effect of force application on tooth and bone displacement. Initial tooth displacement (microscopical), right after force application, could give an indication for the longitudinal tooth displacement to be expected. Variables as the point o

Elucidation of the mechanisms controlling early development and organogenesis is currently progressing in several model species and a new field of research, evolutionary developmental biology, which integrates developmental and comparative approaches, has emerged. Although the expression pattern of many genes during tooth development in mammals is known, data on other lineages are virtually non-existent. Comparison of tooth development, and particularly of gene expression (and function) during tooth morphogenesis and differentiation, in representative species of various vertebrate lineages is

Tooth types, their arrangement and the mode of tooth replacement were studied in juvenile and adult specimens of Polypterus senegalus by means of scanning electron microscopy of cleared and stained specimens as well as sections. All the dermal bones of the oropharynx are almost completely covered with teeth except for the angulare. The same is true for the branchial apparatus where only the hyoid skeleton is toothless. The teeth are uniformly monocuspid and conical, but can be classified according to shape and size into three types. These types and the mode of tooth replacement are characteris

Severe dental traumatic injuries, such as the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket (Avulsion) or the displacement of a tooth within its socket (Intrusive Luxation), may result in extensive injury to the root surface. As a result, the root surface injury heals without cementum and there is fusion between the alveolar bone and the exposed dentin or anorganic exposed cementum, without any attachment apparatus between them. This phenomenon is known as "dento-alveolar ankylosis" and is accompanied by ankylotic resorption of the root. In a process that results subsequent to the ankylosis

Children and young adults often have tooth loss due to congenital tooth deficiency, trauma, or caries. Autotransplantation has many benefits. The transplanted tooth can be moved orthodontically, maintains alveolar bone growth potential during eruption, and functional periodontal ligament function also permits tooth eruption, allows the defected areas to be filled with the bones; gingival contour is much more successful than the one obtained with prosthesis. In this paper, treatment steps and follow-up results of autotransplantation case supported with biostimulation are mentioned. A 14-year-ol

PURPOSE: The etiopathology of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) is multifactorial and still not fully understood. Tooth wear is defined as loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical or mechanical process that does not involve bacteria. This form of tooth surface loss includes attrition, abrasion, erosion, and abfraction. Noncarious cervical lesions represent loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction. The purpose of this clinical study of NCCL was to analyze the etiology in relation to age and to identify the most important risk factors associated with cervical lesions, as well as pa

Literature review There is a paucity of information on the concise relationship between endodontics and orthodontics during treatment planning decisions. This relationship ranges from effects on the pulp from orthodontic treatment and the potential for resorption during tooth movement, to the clinical management of teeth requiring integrated endodontic and orthodontic treatment. This paper reviews the literature based on the definition of endodontics and the scope of endodontic practice as they relate to common orthodontic-endodontic treatment planning challenges. Literature data bases were ac

Age inference is a key focus of forensic work, and traditional dental age inference methods require individuals to have a complete dental arch. However, congenital or acquired tooth loss may lead to random tooth loss in individuals, resulting in bias in age prediction. To address this issue, we validated and modified Bedek's tooth age inference method (a method for inferring the age of a population with missing teeth) for the first time in the Chinese population of children with complete dentition, congenital tooth loss, and acquired tooth loss, and constructed two new machine learning based t

This case report describes the treatment of two maxillary central incisors following a traumatic injury with tooth #8 developing replacement resorption and #9 developing inflammatory root resorption. A 10-year-old girl presented complaining of pain in her maxillary central incisors. Upon clinical examination, teeth #8 and #9 were tender to percussion and palpation of the buccal soft tissues. Thermal and electrical pulpal sensitivity tests for teeth #8 and #9 were negative. An intraoral periapical radiograph revealed resorptive defects in tooth #8, which were filled with bone-like tissue, while

The mechanism of root formation and tooth eruption is a complex process which is not fully understood. Prior to a tooth emerging into the oral cavity, root genesis is initiated by derivatives of the enamel organ. The dental follicle mediates an eruption pathway allowing for movement of the developing tooth in a coronal direction. As the tooth moves towards the oral cavity, root formation occurs passively in the resulting space. Failure of the enamel organ and dental follicle to properly coordinate may result in complications in the eruption process. This clinical report presents 3 cases of iso

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative enamel alteration that asymmetrically affects the first molars and may also affect permanent incisors, clinically presenting as demarcated opacities with white, yellow, or brown discoloration. This condition can lead to increased risk of caries, esthetic impairment, fractures, and tooth loss. The aim of this case report is to describe the implementation of an esthetic treatment involving dental bleaching, resin infiltration (RI), and composite resin restoration for a patient with MIH. A 26-year-old woman presented with yellow and brown st

The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro whether the type of tooth preservation before treatment with the Tooth Transformer® (TT) device affects the osteoinductive characteristics of the extracted tooth. Forty extracted teeth from healthy non-smoking patients were selected. All teeth were cleaned of caries, tartar, and filling material and then roughly sectioned and divided into four experimental groups according to storage type: room-temperature (RT) tooth samples, frozen tooth samples, RIPA tooth samples, and fresh tooth samples. Each sample was minced, demineralized, and disinfect

OBJECTIVES: Tooth eruption may serve as a potential indicator of systemic health and a potent developmental milestone in children. This study evaluated the impact of perinatal and neonatal risk factors on the chronology of primary tooth eruption among high-risk infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 232 high-risk infants. Maternal and neonatal data were extracted from validated medical records. Oral examinations were performed to record the timing of erupted primary teeth. Delayed eruption scoring was based on

BACKGROUND: The success of tooth transplantation or replantation depends on the viability of periodontal ligament in the planted tooth. Mechanical injury to periodontal tissues frequently results in dental root resorption and dental ankylosis, which leads to the failure of transplantation or replantation. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been recently used to induce periodontal regeneration. In this report, we show a clinical case of EMD application in the transplantation of an inversely impacted and immature tooth.
METHODS: An impacted second premolar was found in the right maxilla of a 16

Lesions to the radicular bifurcation generally entail the removal of the tooth in question. This leads to the need to create a prosthetic bridge to compensate for the absence of the extracted tooth. This solution is not readily accepted by the patient who wishes to avoid involving other teeth. In these cases rhizectomy and the execution of an inlay on an adjacent tooth may satisfy the patient and resolve the clinical symptoms. The authors report a case of rhizectomy and prosthetic reconstruction of a tooth using inlay.
