Quantification of jaw reflexes evoked by natural tooth contact in human subjects.

Inhibitory jaw reflexes are believed to be important for protecting the teeth and temporo-mandibular structures from damage during sudden or forceful biting or mastication. Accordingly, alterations in these reflexes are sometimes implicated in aetiologies proposed for oro-facial pain syndromes, although the association is not well-established. We now aim to develop a method for quantifying objectively inhibitory jaw reflexes evoked by natural tooth contact. In the longer term, this may provide a new approach to examining the association of altered reflexes and clinical conditions. Eighteen sub

Morbidity in the marshes: using spatial epidemiology to investigate skeletal evidence for Malaria in Anglo-Saxon England (AD 410-1050).

Concerns over climate change and its potential impact on infectious disease prevalence have contributed to a resurging interest in malaria in the past. A wealth of historical evidence indicates that malaria, specifically Plasmodium vivax, was endemic in the wetlands of England from the 16th century onwards. While it is thought that malaria was introduced to Britain during the Roman occupation (AD first to fifth centuries), the lack of written mortality records prior to the post-medieval period makes it difficult to evaluate either the presence or impact of the disease. The analysis of human sk

Intracranial ependymomas treated with radiotherapy: long-term results from a single institution.

The purpose of the study is to report long-term outcomes following surgery and radiotherapy for intracranial ependymoma. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients treated with radiotherapy for localized intracranial ependymomas from 1964 to 2006. Patients with subependymomas and ependymoblastomas, and those undergoing re-irradiation, were excluded. Our study population is 44 patients: 37 infratentorial lesions, 7 supratentorial. All patients had postoperative radiotherapy; most received sub-total resection and one-third received gross total resection. Most patients received l

Surgical treatment of nonparasitic cysts of the liver: open versus laparoscopic treatment.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the immediately postoperative and follow-up results of open and laparoscopic surgery of hepatic cysts in a tertiary hepatobiliary referral center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 1999 to February 2007, 59 patients underwent surgical treatment for nonparasitic liver cysts. Patients were assigned to the laparoscopic (n = 42) or open group (n = 17) for analysis. RESULTS: Three conversions to open procedures had to be performed in the laparoscopic group. One patient had to be reoperated because of a bile leakage in the laparoscopic group. Follow

Observed behaviours of pre-term children in a social play situation with classroom peers.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have reported social adjustment problems in pre-term children. OBJECTIVES: To observe the pre-term's behaviour in an experimental situation and correlate these observed behaviours with the children's peer-rated social behaviours (withdrawal, aggression and sociability/leadership). METHODS: Of 56 pre-term children, 24 were classified as the sick pre-term (SPT) group and 32 children as the healthy pre-term (HPT) group. The comparison group comprised 56 healthy full-terms. The experimental situation used a game called Rush Hour, a labyrinth-type board game. The p

Vacations to waterside locations result in nevus development in Colorado children.

Nevi are a main risk factor for malignant melanoma, and most nevi develop in childhood. This study examined the relationship between vacations and nevi in 681 White children born in 1998 who were lifetime residents of Colorado. Vacation histories were assessed through telephone interviews of parents, whereas nevus and phenotypic characteristics were assessed through skin exams at age 7. Multiple linear and logistic regression were used to assess the influence of vacations on counts of nevi <2 mm in size and the presence of any nevi > or = 2 mm after controlling for other variables. Each waters

Touching behaviors of infants of depressed mothers during normal and perturbed interactions.

The present study investigated the touching behaviors of 4-month-old infants of depressed and non-depressed mothers during the still-face (SF; maternal emotional unavailability) and separation (SP; maternal physical unavailability) procedures. Forty-one dyads participated in the present study; dyads were from low SES backgrounds and they exhibited poor relationship qualities (e.g. poor maternal sensitivity, low infant responsiveness); thus, they were considered at-risk. Results indicated that infants exhibited more patting and pulling when mothers were unavailable during the SF and SP procedur

Large artery stiffening as a link between cerebral lacunar infarction and renal albuminuria.

BACKGROUND: Stiffening of large arteries increases pulsatile pressure and flow stresses, which extend to the microcirculation in vasodilated organs such as the brain and kidneys. Subclinical cerebral lacunar infarction and albuminuria, both of which are early manifestations of microvascular damage, have been shown to be potentially interrelated in hypertension and with aging, but the underlying pathogenesis remains unknown. METHODS: In a population of 351 general adults aged > or =50 years, urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (

Material handling performance of patients with chronic low back pain during functional capacity evaluation: a comparison between three countries.

PURPOSE: Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) are batteries of tests designed to measure patients' ability to perform work-related activities. Although FCEs are used worldwide, it is unknown how patients' performances compare between countries or settings. This study was performed to explore similarities and differences in FCE performance of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) between three international settings that utilize the same FCE protocol. METHODS: Standardized FCEs were performed on three cohorts of patients with CLBP: A sample from an outpatient rehabilitation context in T

Is poor frequency modulation detection linked to literacy problems? A comparison of specific reading disability and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

Specific reading disability (SRD) is now widely recognised as often being caused by phonological processing problems, affecting analysis of spoken as well as written language. According to one theoretical account, these phonological problems are due to low-level problems in auditory perception of dynamic acoustic cues. Evidence for this has come from studies showing poor discrimination of frequency-modulated from unmodulated tones. We measured frequency modulation detection limens (FMDLs) in 16 children with specific reading disability (SRD group), 16 children with mild to moderate hearing los

The effects of finger rest positions on hand muscle load and pinch force in simulated dental hygiene work.

One of the techniques taught in dental and dental hygiene programs is to use finger rests to stabilize the instrument while performing dental scaling or other types of dental work. It is believed that finger rests may also reduce muscle stress and prevent injury due to muscle fatigue. In this study the effects of three different finger rest positions on hand muscle activity and thumb pinch force were compared. Twelve predental students performed simulated dental scaling tasks on a manikin using three different finger rest positions: 1) no finger rest, 2) one finger rest, and 3) two finger rest

Out-of-home placement of children with intellectual disability: Israeli-born parents vs. new immigrants from the ex-USSR.

Although the policy of deinstitutionalization encourages parents to raise a child with development disability at home, professionals are becoming increasingly aware of these parents' care-giving roles. Immigrant parents from the ex-USSR who have children with developmental disabilities are potential clients for placement, but to date, the tendency in Israel to out-of-home placement by immigrant parents, compared with Israeli-born parents, has not been studied. The placement variables were examined as a function of place of birth, emotional stress and social support. The sample was 100 parents

Pancreatic duct strictures: identifying risk of malignancy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to define PDS characteristics that predict malignancy and would thus invoke further diagnostic evaluation or aggressive treatment. METHODS: 355 cases of PDS were diagnosed by ERCP during a 7-year period at a single institution. A retrospective review identified clinical/demographic patient data and ERCP results. RESULTS: 218 (61%) patients with a PDS were found to have an isolated PDS. Twelve percent of isolated PDS and 79% of CBD stricture-associated PDS were malignant. The sensitivity and specificity for the double duct sign for malignancy were 77% and 80% resp

Implications of elevated cardiac troponin T in ambulatory patients with heart failure: a prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Elevated concentrations of cardiac troponin T (TnT) have been reported in patients hospitalized for decompensated heart failure (HF). We assessed whether elevated TnT levels are associated with the severity, etiology, and prognosis of HF in stable, ambulatory patients. METHODS: From 1998-1999, we prospectively collected data from 136 ambulatory patients with HF, New York Heart Association functional class II to IV, ejection fraction < or =35%, and no recent unstable angina, myocardial infarction, surgery, or coronary revascularization. Blood was obtained and analyzed by immunoassa

New insights into ADPKD molecular pathways using combination of SAGE and microarray technologies.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutations in the PKD1 or PKD2 gene, but cellular mechanisms of cystogenesis remain unclear. In an attempt to display the array of cyst-specific molecules and to elucidate the disease pathway, we have performed comprehensive high-throughput expression analysis of normal and ADPKD epithelia in a two-step fashion. First, we generated expression profiles of normal and cystic epithelia derived from kidney and liver using serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE). We found 472 and 499 differentially expressed genes with fivefold diffe
