Revisiting the picky eater phenomenon: neophobic behaviors of young children.

OBJECTIVES: To compare picky eater behaviors (food neophobia) of children as toddlers and at 42 to 84 months of age and to assess their mothers' neophobic behaviors. METHODS: In a follow-up study of toddlers' picky eater behaviors, trained interviewers conducted four in-home interviews with mothers (n = 71) when their children were 42, 60, 72 and 84 months of age. Mothers reported children's diets (1 weekend day and 2 week days, 12 days total) and their behaviors; weight and height were measured. An additional interview at 48 months involved only mothers' behaviors. Nutritionist IV software,

A placebo-controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy and clomipramine in trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: The major treatments reported to be effective in the treatment of trichotillomania are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with habit reversal and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors such as clomipramine. However, the 2 treatments have not been previously compared with each other. This study examines the efficacy of CBT and clomipramine compared with placebo in the treatment of trichotillomania. METHOD: Twenty-three patients with trichotillomania as determined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R entered and 16 completed a 9-week, placebo-controlled, randomiz

Behavioral and self-concept differences in tattooed and nontattooed college students.

235 college students rated themselves on a series of bipolar adjectives and answered questions about their involvement in a variety of "risky" behaviors, including tattooing and body piercing. 29 tattooed students rated themselves as more adventurous, creative, artistic, individualistic, and risky than those without tattoos. The 98 tattooed males considered themselves more attractive. Behaviorally, those with tattoos reported smoking more cigarettes. Tattooed men also reported more sexual partners, were more likely to report they had been arrested, and were more likely to have body piercings.

Occupational exposure to blood: search for a relation between personality and behavior.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the behavior of French nurses after occupational exposure to blood (OEB); to study the reasons for not reporting an OEB to the occupational medicine service or the hospital authorities, and to explore the links between personality traits and both the risk of having an OEB and the likelihood of reporting it. DESIGN: A descriptive and correlational study using a cross-sectional survey for data collection. SETTING: Six nursing schools (four initial training institutes and two specialty training schools, one for surgical nurses and one for nurse anesthetists) and six hospi

The sexual behavior of married Mexican immigrant men in North Carolina.

In the southern United States, North Carolina has attracted an unprecedented influx of Hispanic immigrants in the 1990s. Detailed data on the sexual behavior of these recent immigrants are lacking. This exploratory study used two methods, a survey and qualitative interviews. For both methods, participants were recruited using convenience sampling. All study participants were first-generation Mexican immigrants who had lived in North Carolina for at least six consecutive months. The survey, administered face-to-face, explored the sexual attitudes and behavior of 43 married Mexican men living in

Rats sensitized to morphine are resistant to the behavioral effects of an unavoidable stress.

In agreement with the results of other authors, rats sensitized to morphine and challenged with 5 mg/kg of morphine after 7 days of wash-out showed intense stereotyped movements, the expression of which was selectively antagonized by SCH 23390. Sensitized rats were exposed to an unavoidable stress (which consistently produces an escape deficit in control animals) after 3, 7 and 21 days of morphine wash-out. Twenty-four hours after the unavoidable stress, animals were tested for their capacity to escape and their performance was compared to that of control-stressed and naive rats. Morphine sens

An evaluation of the effects of matched stimuli on behaviors maintained by automatic reinforcement.

The purpose of the current investigation was to extend the literature on matched stimuli to three dissimilar forms of aberrant behavior (dangerous climbing and jumping, saliva manipulation, and hand mouthing). The results of functional analyses suggested that each behavior was automatically reinforced. Preference assessments were used to identify two classes of stimuli: items that matched the hypothesized sensory consequences of aberrant behavior (matched stimuli) and items that produced sensory consequences that were not similar to those produced by the aberrant behavior (unmatched stimuli).

Acquisition and development of monkey tool-use: behavioral and kinematic analyses.

Four Japanese macaques were trained in the use of a T-shaped rake. Use the tool and development of the level of the skill of tool-use took place in three distinct stages. During stage 1, two of the monkeys seemed to use insight for initial solution, while fortuitous experiences led the other two monkeys to the solution. All the monkeys used the tool in a stereotyped manner and could retrieve food only when the tool was placed close to the food. At stage 2 the monkeys became able to manipulate the tool in various ways and became able to retrieve the food regardless of its position. By stage 3 t

Sociomoral reflection and prosocial and antisocial behavior: two Italian studies.

Two Italian studies on the development of moral judgment based on the 1992 Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form of Gibbs, Basinger, and Fuller were performed. In Study 1, 49 male and female adolescent volunteers involved in prosocial activities and a control group of 60 nonvolunteers completed the form. In Study 2, 60 male drug abusers in a drug-rehabilitation community were compared with a matched group of 60 nondrug abusers. Analysis showed that involvement in prosocial activities was associated with higher stages of moral judgment and Type B responses, while drug abuse was associated wi

Polarographic and voltammetric behavior of selenious acid and its use in analysis.

Solution chemistry of Se(IV), in particular the acid-base properties, salt and complex formation, chemical reduction and reaction of Se(IV) with organic and inorganic sulfur compounds are briefly summarized. The electrochemical reduction of Se(IV) on dropping and stationary mercury electrodes is dealt with in some detail. The effects of antecedent acid-base equilibria and of consecutive reactions of the reduction product, Se(2-), adsorption of their products, and effects of added metal ions are discussed. The principles and applications of stripping analyses for determination of ultratraces of

Behavior, pain perception, and the extremely low-birth weight survivor.

This article explores the literature concerning responses to pain of both premature and term-born newborn infants, the evidence for short-term and long-term effects of pain, and behavioral sequelae in individuals who have experienced repeated early pain in neonatal life as they mature. There is no doubt that pain causes stress in babies and this in turn may adversely affect long-term neurodevelopmental outcome. Although there are methods for assessing dimensions of acute reactivity to pain in an experimental setting, there are no very good measures available at the present time that can be use

Behavioral components of tolerance to repeated inhalation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in rats.

The possibility that the acute neurotoxic effects of organic solvents change with repeated exposure will affect risk assessment of these pollutants. We observed previously that rats inhaling trichloroethylene (TCE) showed a progressive attenuation of impairment of signal detection behavior across several weeks of intermittent exposure, suggesting the development of tolerance. Here, we explored the development of tolerance to TCE during two weeks of daily exposures, and the degree to which learned behavioral modifications ("behavioral tolerance") could account for the effect. Relative persistence of behavior: a fundamental measure of relative reinforcing effects.

Relative persistence of behavior is measured in terms of rates of behavior at a higher schedule value divided by rates of behavior at a lower schedule value and then multiplied by 100 to express the result as a percentage. Relative persistence of behavior is a direct function of reinforcer size over a broad range of values. In 1 study, food was the reinforcer; however, in most studies of persistence, drug reinforcers were used, and the drugs were taken orally or intravenously. A variety of reinforcing drugs were studied: barbiturates, opioids, psychomotor stimulants, a dissociative anesthetic,

Behavior and performance of rhesus monkeys during Bion 11 flight.

Study of behavior and performance patterns of two Bion 11 monkeys showed that they adapted to the space environment at a different rate. Inflight, both animals successfully performed eye-head-hand coordination tasks (Program 1) and failed to complete foot pedal tasks (Program 2), although they were successful in performing Program 2 before and immediately after flight.

Effects of lamotrigine on behavioral and cardiovascular responses to cocaine in human subjects.

We evaluated the effects of acute pretreatment with lamotrigine, a putative glutamate release inhibitor, on the physiological and behavioral responses to intranasal cocaine in cocaine-dependent volunteers (N = 8). The study employed a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject design. Subjects participated in six experimental sessions. On each study day, placebo, lamotrigine 125 mg, or lamotrigine 250 mg was administered orally in the morning, followed 2 hours later by intranasal cocaine 120 mg/70 kg or placebo. Measurements of heart rate and blood pressure were acquired, and subjects re

School stress, teachers' abusive behaviors, and children's coping strategies.

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the research study on school stress and the coping strategies children use in public schools in Poland. The main goals were to identify and investigate: (1) school stress components, its frequency and intensity, (2) its psychological and temperamental correlates and consequences, (3) students' coping strategies. METHOD: A field-correlative design was applied to test 271 students, between the ages of 13 and 14, using six questionnaires. School stressors and children's coping strategies were identified and analyzed on two separate questionnaires with open-ended qu

Social, emotional, and behavioral functioning of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) would have more social and emotional problems than case-control classmates. METHODS: Using a case-control design, children with JRA (n = 74), ages 8-14, were compared with case-control classmates (n = 74). Peer relationships, emotional well-being, and behavior, based on peer-, teacher-, parent-, and self-report scores on common measures, were compared using analysis of variance. RESULTS: Relative to case-control classmates, children with JRA were similar on all measures of social functioning and b

Extramammary Paget's disease with aggressive behavior: a report of two cases.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is an intraepithelial neoplastic disorder which is included as a rare malignant condition. However, it sometimes shows aggressive behavior of local recurrence and coexisting malignancy. We had experienced nine cases of EMPD involving the scrotum for seven years. Two cases of them presented metastasis. The first case presented extensive inguinal lymph node metastasis with underlying adnexal adenocarcinoma one year after wide local excision. The second case initially presented multiple metastasis to the liver and in the lymph node. The latter, showing fulminan
