Ocular Manifestations of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2): A Critical Review of Current Literature.

The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in China in the city of Wuhan in December of 2019 and since then more than 5,000,000 people have been infected, with approximately 338,000 deaths worldwide. The virus causes the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is characterized by fever, myalgia and cough, with severe acute respiratory syndrome being the most fearsome complication. Nevertheless, the vast majority of cases present mild symptoms or none. Central nervous system and cardiovascular manifestations have been reported. The range of o

COVID-19-Associated Neurological Disorders: The Potential Route of CNS Invasion and Blood-Brain Relevance.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel human coronavirus that has sparked a global pandemic of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). The virus invades human cells through the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor-driven pathway, primarily targeting the human respiratory tract. However, emerging reports of neurological manifestations demonstrate the neuroinvasive potential of SARS-CoV-2. This review highlights the possible routes by which SARS-CoV-2 may invade the central nervous system (CNS) and provides insight into recent case reports of COVID

Seizures, renal failure and acute respiratory failure: not your typical case of Henoch-Schonlein purpura.

A 30-year-old Caucasian woman with no prior medical history presented with pedal oedema, arthralgias and abdominal pain with diarrhoea, following a respiratory infection. She had mild abdominal tenderness along with a purpuric rash on the extremities and was anaemic. Following initial workup for anaemia and rash, her condition deteriorated with renal impairment, respiratory failure and seizures necessitating ventilatory support, dialysis and steroids. Serologies were negative, and skin biopsy showed leucocytoclastic vasculitis without vascular IgA deposition, and renal biopsy showed subendothe

Low back pain and gastroesophageal reflux in patients with COPD: the disease in the breath.

COPD is a worsening condition that leads to a pathologic degeneration of the respiratory system. It represents one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in the world, and it is characterized by the presence of associated comorbidity. This article analyzes gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and low back pain (LBP) in patients with COPD and tries to produce anatomo-clinical considerations on the reasons of the presence of these comorbidities. The considerations of the authors are based on the anatomic functions and characteristics of the respiratory diaphragm that are not a

Hypoxemia after single-shot anesthesia in common marmosets.

BACKGROUND: It remains unknown how single-shot anesthesia influences physical parameters, especially respiratory function and blood oxygen level of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) which came to be used for laboratory research. METHODS: We measured blood oxygen levels, both before and after oxygenation, in 13 common marmosets under two single-shot anesthesia conditions: ketamine/xylazine/atropine and alphaxalone. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We found that SpO2 values decreased to about 80% in the ketamine/xylazine/atropine protocol and fell just below 90% in the alphaxalone protocol. We obs

Medical Emergencies in Pediatric Dentistry.

Medical emergencies that are life threatening can occur in dental practice. Complications may arise because of an underlying disease or a reaction to medication. Reactions to medications may be allergic and toxic. The most common reactions are toxic reactions to local anesthetics, whereas allergies occur mainly as a consequence of the application of antibiotics, usually penicillin. In response to stress, vasovagal syncope typically occurs. Other causes may be related to an underlying disease-specific pathology (such as acute asthma attack, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypoglycemia, or seizures) or a

Acute respiratory distress syndrome associated with tumor lysis syndrome in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Tumor lysis syndrome is a serious and dangerous complication usually associated with antiblastic treatment in some malignancies characterized by high cell turn-over. Mild or severe electrolyte abnormalities including high serum levels of uric acid, potassium, phosphorus, creatinine, bun and reduction of calcium can be responsible for multi-organ failure, involving mostly kidneys, heart and central nervous system. Renal damage can be followed by acute renal failure, weight gain, progressive liver impairment, overproduction of cytokines, and subsequent maintenance of multi-organ damage. Life-thr

Acitretin treatment for lipoid proteinosis.

Lipoid proteinosis (LP) is a rare, autosomal-recessive disease characterized by the hoarseness and widespread cutaneous scarring, more prominent on sun-exposed areas. Yellow-white plaques can be seen on oral mucosa and on the skin among depressed scars. Histological evaluation of the affected sites shows accumulation of hyaline-like material in dermis and disruption of basement membrane. Although LP is compatible with normal life expectancy, involvement of upper respiratory tract may endanger patient's life, especially in the case of a respiratory tract infection. Lethal complications after poisoning with chloroform--case report and literature review.

Chloroform is a potent central nervous system and respiratory depressant. The toxicities associated with chloroform frequently occur after inhalation. Hepatotoxicity is secondary to production of a toxic metabolite, with a peak elevation of liver enzymes 72 hours after exposure. Acute liver failure after chloroform inhalation is rarely described, this syndrome being produced mainly by viral hepatitis, idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury, and acetaminophen ingestion. This report describes the case of a 46-year-old woman who presented to emergency department with coma, signs of respiratory f

Viral infections and allergies.

Respiratory viral infections have been implicated in the origin of, protection from and exacerbation of allergy-related symptoms in a variety of ways. Viral infections are closely linked to infantile wheezing. Severe bronchiolitis in early infancy may predispose to chronic childhood asthma as well as allergic sensitization; alternatively it could represent a marker of susceptible individuals. In contrast, repeated mild infections in early life may have a protective role in the development of asthma or atopy by driving the immune system towards Th1 responses. However, evidence on this hypothesi

Respiratory burst as a biomarker for stress responses.

A module for the detection of immunotoxic events within the test system Triple-Lux to be used during spaceflights was developed. It is based on the production of reactive oxygen species within the respiratory burst during phagocytosis or after stimulation of the phagocytes with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). For this purpose, luminol-dependent chemiluminescence was measured. The assays were carried out with polymorphonuclear leukocytes purified from sheep peripheral blood. The influence of hydrocortisone and Cd2+ on the respiratory burst in polymorphonuclear leukocytes was assayed. Hyd

Sleep disordered breathing and its treatment in congestive heart failure.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a common problem with adverse cardiorespiratory, endocrinological, and endothelial effects. Recent studies demonstrate an even higher prevalence of SDB in congestive heart failure (CHF) than in a randomly selected population, with up to 40% and 11% having Cheyne Stokes respiration-central sleep apnoea and obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndromes, respectively. Randomised controlled trials of nocturnal respiratory support for SDB associated with CHF for up to three months demonstrate significant benefits in terms of improvements in left ventricular ejecti

Scavenging of reactive oxygen species by letosteine, a molecule with two blocked-SH groups. Comparison with free-SH drugs.

Acute production of reactive oxygen species by polymorphonuclear neutrophils during the respiratory burst may induce tissue injuries. In this in vitro study, it was demonstrated that letosteine, a mucolytic agent containing two blocked thiol groups, had antioxidant activity, but only when it was first submitted to alkaline hydrolysis. In a cell-free system, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorous acid and hydroxyl radical concentrations were reduced by half by letosteine concentrations of 200, 15 and 350 mumol/l, respectively. The mechanism of letosteine action may be related to the -SH group liberate

[Impairment of bronchial reactivity in patients with diabetes mellitus type I].

Bronchial provocation tests (histamine and acetylcholine) were performed in 40 subjects (30 of them with type 1 diabetes, and 10 healthy volunteers) without any history of respiratory disease, not smoking and not taking any bronchodilating drugs. Bronchial reactivity was assessed using PC20 estimated spirographically by measuring FEV1. The patients were classified into three groups according to the duration of the disease: group I (0-7 yrs), group II (8-15), and group III (> 15). In all the three groups diabetes was at a similar degree of compensation, as evaluated by the mean circadian glycae

Thoracic trauma.

The physiologic equilibrium of chest injury patients is frequently precarious, and mild stress during examination and treatment may precipitate acute decompensation and death. This is particularly true with the respiratory system, where the normally large respiratory reserve capacity may be rapidly lost. Accurate assessment of the nature of the thoracic injury and the severity of that injury must be determined in order to formulate a therapeutic plan. Many thoracic injuries, such as pneumothorax, pulmonary contusions, or rib fractures, will be self-limiting. Other conditions must be recognized

Altered metabolism of phospholipids in the lung of rats with peritonitis.

Pulmonary alterations after shock and sepsis, described clinically as shock lung or adult respiratory distress syndrome, are of great importance in intensive care. Pathogenetically an alteration of the surfactant system of the lung is often discussed. Since phospholipids are constituents of lung surfactants, phospholipid metabolism is investigated in experimental peritonitis in rats in our laboratory. 15 hours after inducing a peritonitis, the lung incorporates more oleic acid than that in animals of the reference group. 33 hours after inducing peritonitis, the capacity of the lung to incorpor

Comparative effects of electronic and traditional cigarette use on pulmonary function, autonomic regulation, and exercise capacity in young adults.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use among university students has been increasing. While substantial information exists on the impact of e-cigarette use on respiratory function, limited data exists on its early effects on cardiac autonomic function and exercise capacity in young individuals. AIMS: This study evaluated respiratory function, heart rate variability (HRV), and exercise capacity in electronic cigarette users compared to traditional cigarette smokers and non-smokers among university students. METHODS: Sixty-one healthy volunteers aged 18-35 years were divided into three groups: nonsmokers (

The origin and mechanisms of smooth muscle cell development in vertebrates.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) represent a major structural and functional component of many organs during embryonic development and adulthood. These cells are a crucial component of vertebrate structure and physiology, and an updated overview of the developmental and functional process of smooth muscle during organogenesis is desirable. Here, we describe the developmental origin of SMCs within different tissues by comparing their specification and differentiation with other organs, including the cardiovascular, respiratory and intestinal systems. We then discuss the instructive roles of smooth mu
