Mice were given T-2 toxin daily by stomach tube for a period of 10 days. Three mice were killed on days 1, 2, 7, 9, and 12, and selected tissues were processed for electron microscopy and analyzed for cellular abnormalities. No changes in cellular ultrastructure were observed in either kidney or pancreas. Necrosis of a few cells (estimated as 0.1%) and an occasional slight reduction of brush border microvilli were observed in the intestinal mucosal epithelium at 1 and 2 days post treatment but not at 7, 9, and 12 days post treatment. Children with autoimmune hepatitis have high serum titers of antibodies directed against a 50-kD protein of rat liver endoplasmic reticulum. Affinity-purified anti-50-kD antibodies were used to screen a rat liver cDNA library in lambda GT-11 expression vector. 12 immunopositive clones were obtained. Cells infected by Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, display unusual intracellular morphological changes characterized by dilatation of the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and outer nuclear envelope. These changes are consistent with those that might be expected to occur following peroxidation of membrane lipids initiated by oxygen radical species, such as the hydroxyl radical or a variety of organic radicals. Using a fluorescent probe, we have found significantly increased levels of peroxides in human endothelial cells infected by R. rickettsii.

Lymph node sections from 12 patients with Sézary syndrome (SS) were studied histologically. The histopathologic alterations were compared with those in lymph nodes from four patients with (erythrodermatic) mycosis fungoides (MF) and two patients with a benign form of erythroderma. Fifty surgical specimens from 10 different diseases were examined for the presence of binucleate plasma cells. Thirty-three specimens showed binucleated plasma cells. This article describes three patients with megakaryoblastic leukemia, in whom the blast cells were identified as megakaryoblasts by the platelet peroxidase (PPO) reaction. More than 70% of the blasts in these patients were positive for the PPO reaction. Lymph node biopsy specimens from 76 cases of Hodgkin's disease, 23 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and 19 reactive affections of lymph nodes were studied. Tissue from seven patients with tuberous sclerosis and subependymal giant-cell tumors was examined with special stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Immunoreactive glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was not found in the giant cells of four tumors, but was present in some tumor cells in the other three. Fibronectin in human solid tumors was studied by indirect immunofluorescence staining of biopsy material. Altogether 73 tumors were examined, comprising 12 sarcomas, 3 melanomas 1 reticulum cell sarcoma, 39 carcinomas, 6 benign soft-tissue tumors and 12 benign epithelial tumors. We employed vitreous biopsy (needle aspiration and pars plana vitrectomy) in eight cases of patients with uveitis of unknown etiology.
