Mammalian tooth development is a precise and complicated procedure. Several signaling pathways, such as nuclear factor (NF)-κB and WNT, are key regulators of tooth development. Any disturbance of these signaling pathways can potentially affect or block normal tooth development, and presently, there are more than 150 syndromes and 80 genes known to be related to tooth agenesis. Clarifying the interaction and crosstalk among these genes will provide important information regarding the mechanisms underlying missing teeth. In the current review, we summarize recently published findings on genes re

OBJECTIVES: Tooth avulsion is defined as total tooth displacement from the alveolar socket; the best treatment is replantation of the tooth. Human milk influences body health, growth, and development related to the presence of micro and macro nutrient components. This study assessed the effects of human colostrum as a storage medium on the success of tooth replantation.
METHODS: The upper left incisor of 30 adult male Wistar rats was extracted, and the rats were divided into three groups according to the storage medium of the extracted tooth for replantation: Hank's balanced salt solution (HB

BACKGROUND: The first permanent molar is susceptible to acquire tooth decay since its eruption, due to its anatomy and because it has been exposed before other teeth.
METHOD: An observational, prolective, transversal and comparative study in 194 students, with an average age of 9.9 ± 1.8 years. The evaluation of the dentobacterial plate (DBP) was analyzed using the O'Leary index and the tooth decay experience with the DMFS (sum of decayed, missing, extracted and filling dental surfaces) and DMFT (sum of decayed, missing, extracted and filling per tooth) indexes.
RESULTS: The prevalence of DB

INTRODUCTION: Impacted teeth present a very common problem in dentistry due to the variable numbers of problems they cause. They have previously been imaged by radiography which is very inaccurate. Dental CT is an upcoming modality which very accurately images the teeth.
AIM: The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy of Dental CT with radiography in assessing the morphology of the impacted tooth and its relation to adjacent structures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a hospital based prospective study in which all patients with impacted teeth who underwent Dental CT and Radiograph

We re-examined tooth variation in specimens of the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica, from the collection of the Siberian Zoological Museum and discuss the mechanisms of dental evolution. The number of teeth counted in 1789 specimens ranged from 34 to 47, and supernumerary, absent, and connate teeth were observed. The most frequent tooth anomaly was an absent tooth in the premolar region (200 maxillary first premolars and 190 mandibular third premolars), which does not support Fujita and Kirino's terminal reduction hypothesis in the mandible [Fujita T, Kirino T. OBJECTIVES: Malocclusion, particularly anterior crossbite and open bite, contributes to abnormal occlusal stress distribution, potentially leading to tooth loss. We examined the association between anterior malocclusions and tooth loss-related outcomes in a large-scale, community-based sample of Japanese adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study targeted 17,349 participants aged ≥ 40 years from the Tohoku Medical Megabank Cohort Study (2013-2017). Based on overjet and overbite, participants were classified into normal occlusion (n = 16,790), anterior open bite (n = 177), anter

The tooth is a major component of the vertebrate feeding apparatus and plays a crucial role in species survival, thus subjecting tooth developmental programs to strong selective constraints. However, irrespective of their functional importance, teeth have been lost in multiple lineages of tetrapod vertebrates independently. To understand both the generality and the diversity of developmental mechanisms that cause tooth agenesis in tetrapods, we investigated expression patterns of a series of tooth developmental genes in the lower jaw of toothless turtles and compared them to that of toothed cr

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of tooth decay and its correlation with dental care habits in northwestern Ivory Coast. Study was carried out in primary schools in the city of Odienne in January 1999. The study cohort comprised 500 students of both genders ranging in age from 4 to 15 years. The prevalence of tooth decay was 77.2% and the mean CAO index was 2.43. Dental care involved use of a chewing stick in 49% and a tooth brush in 50.8%. Only 5.6% of children cleaned their teeth three-times a day on a regular basis. Statistical analysis of study data demonstrated a

OBJECTIVE: The biomechanical response of an autotransplanted tooth and surrounding bone to occlusal loads is not well-known. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of root form and occlusal morphology on stress distribution in autotransplanted teeth and surrounding bone by using finite element analysis (FEA).
METHODS: Seven FEA models representing different autotransplanted tooth situations were generated: (a) first molar, (b) third molar, (c) root canal-treated third molar, (d) root canal-treated, ankylosed, third molar, (e) crowned third molar, (f) crowned and root canal

Fusion and germination are the anomalies that occur due to some developmental eccentricity during the time of morpho-differentiation of the tooth bud and have a close resemblance to each other. The gemination is an attempt of the division of a single tooth into two and, hence, appears as an enlarged single tooth while the tooth count is normal when the affected tooth is counted as one. Its exact pathogenesis is ambiguous. This anomaly has been observed mostly in deciduous dentition as compared to that in permanent dentition. Gemination is rarely associated with the third molar and, hence, the

Dental development can be used to estimate age for forensic purposes. However, most of the currently available methods are less reliable for the Indonesian population due to population variability. This study presents a new method and evaluates other methods that utilize dental development to estimate the age of Indonesian people. Panoramic radiographs of 304 young Indonesian people aged 5-23 years old were analysed for deciduous tooth root resorption, permanent tooth calcification, and eruption. The extent of tooth root resorption was determined based on AlQahtani's modified Moorrees et al. m

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is an aggressive pathological condition that can affect any permanent tooth. This process is characterized by replacement of the tooth structure with granulomatous fibrovascular or fibro-osseous tissue. Despite its asymptomatic nature, ICR can lead to tooth loss. This study reports a case of ICR in a 15-year-old boy with a history of dental trauma. The patient had a diagnosis of ICR in tooth #21. After considering the risks of an external surgical approach and exclusive endodontic treatment, intentional re-implantation combined with extraoral composite resin

Tooth autotransplantation is one of the methods used for tooth loss rehabilitation in children. Premolars are usually used as autotransplants requiring esthetic alterations. The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative, alternative and inexpensive way to restore auto-transplanted teeth using the crown of the tooth of the recipient site. A seven-year-old male with a non-contributory medical history presented with an intrusion of his permanent maxillary right central incisor. The tooth underwent orthodontic extrusion using fixed appliances but eventually showed signs of ankylosis. At 10

Occasionally, an orthodontic patient will accidentally traumatize a maxillary anterior tooth before or during orthodontic treatment. In some situations, the trauma will be substantial and avulse the tooth. In other accidents, the tooth may not avulse, but the pulp becomes nonvital. If the pulp is devitalized, and the root has not fully formed, the apex of the root canal may be wide. In this situation, the endodontist may recommend apexification procedures to help close the apex before conventional obturation of the root canal. If the patient is currently undergoing orthodontic movement of the

Introduction: An impacted tooth is one that has not reached the occlusal plane due to a mechanical obstruction, which may include an adjacent tooth, a supernumerary tooth, or an odontoma. Lower third molars are the most frequently impacted teeth, whereas second molars are impacted less often. Currently, diagnostic imaging, such as tomography, is crucial for determining the treatment plan. For the extraction of impacted teeth, a vestibular approach is generally recommended, and for molars, odontectomy prior to tooth luxation and avulsion is advised. Objective: This study was aimed at describing

Pre-Eruptive Intracoronal Resorption (PEIR) is a rare yet significant phenomenon in which an abnormal, well-circumscribed, radiolucent area develops in the tooth prior to eruption. This case report outlines the treatment of a 12 year old Hispanic female who was referred for endodontic evaluation of tooth #31 and subsequently diagnosed with PEIR. The patient's chief complaint was recorded as "spontaneous pain" in the lower right quadrant of her jaw. Clinical examination revealed a partially erupted tooth #31 with no visible decay. Radiographic examination, including a cone beam computed tomogra

Earlier studies on human teeth have provided proof of an expression of the X and Y chromosome genes in tooth crown growth. The Y chromosome promotes the growth of permanent tooth crown enamel and dentin, whereas the effect of the X chromosome seems to be restricted mainly on enamel formation. Also, there are evidences that both of the sex chromosomes are expressed in tooth root growth. The permanent tooth crowns in 47,XXY males or individuals with an extra X or Y chromosome show increased size compared to normal men, which is mainly due to increased enamel thickness, the dentin thickness is so

A 2.5-year-old intact male Irish setter was presented for a draining tract associated with the right mandibular first molar tooth (409). Conscious oral examination yielded two draining tracts associated with the right mandibular first molar tooth. No obvious missing teeth or other gross abnormalities associated with the oral cavity were observed. Upon anesthetized radiographic evaluation, the presence of an unerupted, abnormally positioned, supernumerary premolar tooth was observed. The following article describes the extraction of the right mandibular first molar tooth (409) as well as the un

PURPOSE: To use 3-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained on patients before treatment with dental malocclusion to calculate the heritability estimates of full-tooth angulation and inclination. A heritability estimate is a number between zero and one indicating the percentage of genetic factors involved in determining the phenotypic variation observed.
METHOD: CBCT images of 111 patients (51 sibships) were analysed measuring both tooth angulation and inclination using the Anatomage Invivo5 software for central incisor to second molar. The long axis of each tooth was d

A 14-year-old girl underwent extraction of an ankylosed primary left second molar as requested by her orthodontist. The developing mandibular left second premolar (tooth 20) was unintentionally removed during extraction of the primary molar. Immediate measures were taken to reimplant tooth 20. Recall appointments over the next 10 years included monitoring of tooth 20. The patient also was followed up closely by her orthodontist during this time. Tooth 20 was monitored for proper eruption, root development, and pulpal vitality. The tooth erupted normally, and the results of pulp testing continu
