Acaricidal effect and chemical composition of essential oils extracted from Cuminum cyminum, Pimenta dioica and Ocimum basilicum against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Acaricidal activity of essential oils extracted from cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum), allspice berries (Pimenta dioica) and basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum) were tested on 10-day-old Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick larvae using the LPT. Two-fold dilutions of the three essential oils were tested from a starting dilution of 20% down to 1.25%. Results showed a high toxicological effect for cumin, producing 100% mortality in all tested concentrations on R. microplus larvae. Similarly, allspice essential oil produced 100% mortality at all concentrations with the exception of a dramatic decrea

Acarological investigation and detection of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) in field-collected chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) and small mammals from scrub typhus positive localities in Pahang, West Malaysia.

Scrub typhus (ST) is an acute febrile illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi, 1920) that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected chiggers. In recent years, ST has re-emerged as a public health concern in Malaysia. In 2024, more than 50 laboratory-confirmed human cases of ST were reported in Pahang. A collaborative investigation was undertaken on a subset of 26 cases to identify potential vector sources and animal hosts associated with O. tsutsugamushi transmission. Chigger-based sampling was conducted by trapping small mammals in suspected infection hotspots, including

Comparative population genetic structure of the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene of Haemaphysalis flava (Acari: Ixodidae) between Nantong, China, and regions along the East Asia-Australasian Flyway.

Haemaphysalis flava Neumann, 1897 is recognized as a vector for Dabie bandavirus (severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, SFTSV), which is the etiological agent of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). The tick vector has proliferated and expanded globally in recent years, likely due to the migration of birds. In this study, we selected the mitochondrial 16S rRNA as the genetic marker to analyze the population genetics of H. flava collected from Nantong, China and other regions separated by geographical barriers, all of which are located along the East Asia-Australasia

Statewide surveillance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) for the presence of the human pathogen Borrelia miyamotoi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), a relapsing fever spirochete in Pennsylvania, USA, 2019-2020.

Borrelia miyamotoi disease is an emerging tick-borne human illness in the United States caused by Borrelia miyamotoi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) bacterium. With Pennsylvania reporting thousands of tick-borne disease cases annually, determining the minimum infection rate (MIR) of B. miyamotoi in Ixodes scapularis (Say, Acari: Ixodidae) adults within Pennsylvania is of utmost importance. Active surveillance was performed from October 2019 to April 2020 to collect a minimum of 50 I. scapularis ticks from every county within Pennsylvania and then screened for B. miyamotoi via qPCR. Ticks wer

Two for the price of one: Co-infection with Rickettsia bellii and spotted fever group Rickettsia in Amblyomma (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks recovered from wild birds in Brazil.

The bacterium Rickettsia bellii has been detected in 25 species of ticks in the American continents, but its pathogenic potential is considered as undetermined. A possible role for this species in the phenomenon of transovarial exclusion of pathogenic members of the spotted fever group (SFG) of Rickettsia has been suggested and co-infections with pathogenic species have been reported infrequently in both North and South America. Traditional methods for the molecular detection of rickettsial agents in ticks focus largely on the identification of sequences found in SFG Rickettsia, an approach th

Detection of Babesia spp. in Dogs and Their Ticks From Peninsular Malaysia: Emphasis on Babesia gibsoni and Babesia vogeli Infections in Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae).

Canine babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne disease with a worldwide distribution, including Malaysia. While the prevalence of Babesia has been documented from dogs in Malaysia, occurrence of Babesia has been relatively little studied in their tick vectors. Accordingly, a total of 240 dogs and 140 Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks from Malaysia were molecularly screened for the presence of Babesia protozoa in the present study. Babesia gibsoni was only detected in ticks (1.4%), whereas Babesia vogeli was detected in both ticks (1.4%) and dogs (2.1%). This study

Combination of essential oils from Ocimum americanum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., and Lippia multiflora Mold.: a potential solution for controlling the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is one of the most significant ectoparasites affecting livestock in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. This tick causes substantial economic losses in cattle production by reducing weight gain and milk yield and by transmitting pathogens responsible for diseases such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Conventional control strategies rely largely on synthetic acaricides; however, their use poses risks to human health and the environment and has contributed to the rapid emergence of resistant tick populations. Under these circumstances, the search fo

Investigation of the population structure of the tick vector of Lyme disease Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Canada using mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene sequences.

Genotyping of Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks could enhance understanding of the occurrence and genotypes of I. scapularis-borne pathogens. We investigated the utility of mitochondrial (mt) Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I gene (cox1) sequences as a tool for understanding the population structure of I. scapularis collected in Canada, where we also investigated the geographic occurrence of different cox1 haplotypes. Sequences obtained from 414 ticks were one of 55 unique haplotypes, most of which grouped into one of six clades. Demographic analysis suggested that cox1 sequences have

Rickettsia spp. in Five Tick Species Collected in Central California.

Tick-borne disease surveillance in North America has long focused on Lyme disease, though there is currently a significant shift towards comprehensive pathogen surveillance in ticks. Central California has often been overlooked in regular tick-borne pathogen surveillance despite the presence of numerous medically important tick species. The bacterial genus Rickettsia contains tick-borne species that are known pathogens, such as those in the spotted fever group; nonpathogenic endosymbionts; and many species with unknown pathogenic potential. Five common tick species (Ixodes pacificus Cooley and

A cohort-based population model for the Poultry Red Mite Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae): Application to explore potential pathways for control strategies using Fluralaner as a case study.

This project addresses the challenge of controlling Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in poultry farms. A cohort-based model is developed that couples the pharmacokinetics of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) in the plasma of laying hens with the dynamics of the mites, enabling the simulation of various treatment administration strategies while balancing costs. The study reveals that administering a reduced dose of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) at high frequencies, in conjunction with a customized infestation tolerance threshold for each farm, provides a cost-effective solution for mite control. Specifically, thi

The acaricidal and repellent activity of the essential and nano essential oil of Thymus vulgaris against the larval and engorged adult stages of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae).

BACKGROUND: The brown dog tick is globally distributed and harms the host in terms of blood feeding and pathogen transfer. Chemicals are traditionally used for the control, but herbal plants have been investigated mainly due to their natural components with killing and repellant effects. Previously, the role of thymol has been described for the biocontrol of ticks at different stages. Therefore, a study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a thymol-rich herbal plant, Thymus vulgaris L., and its major constituents on Rhipicephalus sanguineus. RESULTS: In this work, we suggested performing

Species diversity of tick and tick-borne pathogens from roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus), including new record of Haemaphysalis megaspinosa (Acari: Ixodidae), in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.

Hard ticks (Ixodidae family) are primary vectors of zoonotic diseases, including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTSV), anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme borreliosis, and ehrlichiosis. The roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus), a key host for tick-borne diseases, is widely distributed on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea (ROK). Although the increased interactions between deer, livestock, and humans have raised concerns about zoonotic disease transmission, this area has remained understudied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the species diversity of ticks infesting roe d
