Gender disparity and post-traumatic stress disorder and elevated psychological distress in humanitarian migrants resettled in Australia: the moderating role of socioeconomic factors.

AIMS: Humanitarian migrants are at increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and elevated psychological distress. However, men and women often report varying degrees of stress and experience different challenges during migration. While studies have explored PTSD, psychological distress, gender, and resettlement stressors, they have not explored the interplay between these factors. This study aims to address that gap by investigating gender disparities in PTSD and psychological distress among humanitarian migrants in Australia, with a focus on the moderating role of socioeconomic

[The Good Samaritan Donor Experience].

The need for patients with a chronic kidney failure and on dialysis to embark on a kidney transplant process, poses the challenge to identify alternative and effective surgical strategies to overcome the insufficient number of deceased donors. The purpose is to allow the considerable number of patients on the kidney transplant waiting lists to receive appropriate treatment in time and under the most favorable clinical conditions. Living donation from a significant other is becoming increasingly widespread, on a national and international level. Furthermore, in the last years clinical experienc

Perceptions of oral cholera vaccine and reasons for full, partial and non-acceptance during a humanitarian crisis in South Sudan.

Oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaigns were conducted from February to April 2014 among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the midst of a humanitarian crisis in Juba, South Sudan. IDPs were predominantly members of the Nuer ethnic group who had taken refuge in United Nations bases following the eruption of violence in December 2013. The OCV campaigns, which were conducted by United Nations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the request of the Ministry of Health, reached an estimated 85-96% of the target population. As no previous studies on OCV acceptance have been conducted in

The hidden war: humanitarian surgery in a combat zone.

BACKGROUND: Humanitarian surgical care (HSC) provided during wartime plays a substantial role in military operations, but has not been described or quantified beyond individual experiences. METHODS: Prospective survey was conducted of all military members deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan between 2002 and 2011. RESULTS: There were 266 responses. On average, surgeons had been in practice for 3 years at their 1st deployment and the majority were not fellowship trained. HSC was performed on all body systems and patient populations, including surgery for malignancy. Although 30% of responders perf

Sperm donor recruitment, attitudes and provider practices--5 years after the removal of donor anonymity.

STUDY QUESTION: Has the change in donor anonymity legislation in UK affected the recruitment of men wanting to be sperm donors and also affected the attitudes of the practitioners who provide donor sperm treatment? SUMMARY ANSWER: We have performed fewer IUI and IVF treatments using donor sperm following the change in legislation in April 2005 than before. However, we have seen an overall increase in men wanting to donate their sperm, including a small increase in men from ethnic minorities. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Sweden, which removed donor anonymity in 1985, had an initial drop in men want

Commentary on "Genetic harm: bitten by the body that keeps you?

Several important issues are raised and illuminated in "Genetic Harm"; not least, in its detailed discussion of specific genetic disorders. In particular, it focuses on a type of disorder whose ill effects are not manifested at birth, but only at a later stage in life. The conclusion, with its significant implications for practice, seems quite valid: a moral duty should be recognized to genetically (or otherwise, if feasible) cure an embryo of that which is expected to (later) cause such prospective suffering. Yet the reasons given for that conclusion, as well as much of the argument throughou

Comparison of knowledge on travel related health risks and their prevention among humanitarian aid workers and other travellers consulting at the Institut Pasteur travel clinic in Paris, France.

BACKGROUND: Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) workers are a group of travellers highly exposed to infectious diseases due to the conditions and duration of their stay. Yet little is known about their knowledge concerning travel related health risks and their prevention. METHODS: From July to September 2008 a self-administered questionnaire was given to all NGO workers coming for pre-travel consultation and to a comparison group of non-NGO travellers. It examined traveller's knowledge about malaria, traveller's diarrhea, transmission routes of infectious diseases and vaccine availability in

Cost-effectiveness analysis of humanitarian relief interventions: visceral leishmaniasis treatment in the Sudan.

Spending by aid agencies on emergencies has quadrupled over the last decade, to over US$6 billion. To date, cost-effectiveness has seldom been considered in the prioritization and evaluation of emergency interventions. The sheer volume of resources spent on humanitarian aid and the chronicity of many humanitarian interventions call for more attention to be paid to the issue of 'value for money'. In this paper we present data from a major humanitarian crisis, an epidemic of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in war-torn Sudan. The special circumstances provided us, in retrospect, with unusually accura

Outcomes and motivations in unspecified (nondirected altruistic) kidney donation: Results from a United Kingdom prospective cohort study.

Unspecified kidney donors (UKDs) increase the number of high-quality kidneys available for transplantation. This study aimed to determine whether the practice was acceptable, based on the noninferiority of donor physical and psychosocial outcomes when compared to specified kidney donors (SKDs). This longitudinal, prospective cohort study investigated potential living kidney donors from across all 23 UK adult kidney transplant centers. Participants completed validated questionnaires at 4 time points (recruitment, 2-4 weeks predonation, 3- and 12-months postdonation). Clinical outcome data were

Factors associated with independence in activities at hospital discharge, 3 and 6 months after injury in humanitarian settings: A multicenter, prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In humanitarian settings, resuming daily activities after injury is a pivotal aspect of recovery, though under-reported. This study aimed to describe recovery of functioning and identify factors associated with independence in activities up to 6 months after injury in 4 humanitarian settings. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients older than 5 years, admitted for acute injury to 4 health facilities managed or supported by Médecins Sans Frontières, located in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Burundi, and Haiti. The Expanding Role of Education and Research in International Healthcare.

A recent report of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery has continued to emphasize the importance of surgery in global health. Plastic surgeons have been involved in humanitarian care of children in developing countries for many years. The ability to repair children with cleft lip and palate in resource-poor settings has made this desirable for many plastic surgeons. A number of philanthropic plastic surgery organizations arose to deal with the problem in a more structured way. Dr. Donald Laub at Stanford established Interplast (now ReSurg) in 1969. Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee established Oper

[Medicine between humanitarianism and competition: the patients' point of view].

BACKGROUND: An open medical market is supposed to be a promising tool for preserving the meagre resources of the German public health care system. The competition between humane and economic practice induces conflicts which burden physicians as well as patients. To analyse this problem by scientific means, inpatients were interviewed with the help of a standardised protocol. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During 10 weeks 524 inpatients were interviewed. The structured questionnaire consisted of nine closed-ended questions with multiple-choice answers. Question 3 included a free amendment. The gender r

A case of malignant hyperthermia in a child encountered during a humanitarian assistance mission to the Philippines.

Potentially fatal operating room events have become largely preventable with advances in anesthesia and surgical technique. Nonetheless, some lethal emergencies remain unpredictable and can occur whenever general anesthesia is given. We describe a case of malignant hyperthermia encountered and treated during surgical operations concurrent with an overseas humanitarian assistance mission. This case highlights the clinical diversity of malignant hyperthemia as well as the importance of preparation for any potential adverse event wherever trigger agents may be used from the mundane to exotic loca

Motivation towards medical career choice and academic performance in Latin American medical students: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Motivation in medical students is positively associated with learning strategies. However, the evidence of a direct relationship between motivation and performance is vague. The objective of this study is to determine if the motivation that pushed students to choose the medical career is associated with their academic performance during their university years. METHODS: The study was conducted in 4,290 medical students from 10 countries in Latin America. The "Attribution Scale of General Achievement Motivation" was used to evaluate their general performance. The "Medical motivati

Intergroup aggression in chimpanzees and war in nomadic hunter-gatherers: evaluating the chimpanzee model.

Chimpanzee and hunter-gatherer intergroup aggression differ in important ways, including humans having the ability to form peaceful relationships and alliances among groups. This paper nevertheless evaluates the hypothesis that intergroup aggression evolved according to the same functional principles in the two species-selection favoring a tendency to kill members of neighboring groups when killing could be carried out safely. According to this idea chimpanzees and humans are equally risk-averse when fighting. When self-sacrificial war practices are found in humans, therefore, they result from

[The influence of professional values in the emergence of work stress and burn-out in newly graduated nurses].

The aim of this study is to evaluate the work importance values in nurse population in their first years of employment to analyse if they could change and if they could be considered as predictors of job stress and burn-out which developed during this period. A group of nurses has been analysed at the beginning of their employment and during the first three years concerning the work importance values measured with the Scala dei Valori Professionali (SVP), the job stress factors evaluated with the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and the burn-out measured with Maslach Burn-out Inventory MBI. [Some ethical aspects of donation and transplantation].

Ethical and legal consensus in our country bases the practice of donations and transplants on different ethical principles, which are contained in the legislation, closely conforming to the four principles of principialist bioethics: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. The level of donations achieved in our milieu might, in fact, be related to a strict respect for these principles by the health professionals, as well as to the excellent organisation of the transplant world. Many scientific, technical and ethical challenges have had to be met to reach the present state of the t

[The influence of relationship dynamics on the psychosocial outcome of genetically related and unrelated living kidney donor-recipient pairs].

OBJECTIVES: Renal diseases and their treatment can cause distress and psychosocial problems for both patients and relatives. METHODS: Relationship dynamics and parameters of quality of life were assessed in 10 genetically related (brothers) and 14 genetically unrelated donor-recipient pairs (spouses) involved in living kidney donation (LKD). RESULTS: LKDs were described by related donors and recipients as fundamentally positive and in many cases led to an intensification of the relationship between donor and recipient. LKDs between unrelated donors and recipients appeared to achieve the same
