Plants are rarely exposed to ultraviolet C (UV-C) radiation because it is absorbed by the ozone layer. Nevertheless, low doses of UV-C can induce physiological and developmental responses, although the underlying hormonal mechanisms are not well understood. We show that a single one-minute UV-C pulse (20 W/m2) is associated with temporally distinct differences in gibberellin (GA) homeostasis in Arabidopsis. At early sampling times, levels of GA12, a precursor of bioactive GAs, are lower in UV-C-treated plants compared with controls. This is accompanied by lower transcript levels of KS and KAO2

Jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives are lipid-derived phytohormones that coordinate plant growth, development, and stress responses through the bioactive conjugate jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile). Their role in reproductive development is well established, particularly in stamen maturation through the R2R3-MYB transcription factor MYB21, which has been considered largely flower-specific. Here, we reveal a previously unrecognized role of MYB21 in vegetative tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana. Although basal MYB21 transcript levels in leaves are extremely low and spatially restricted, wounding and

Key components of targeted breeding for drought-prone environments are discussed. The "Breeder's Equation" provides a framework to operationalise technologies that improve predictive breeding and accelerate genetic gain. Multi-Environment Trials (METs) are used to evaluate genotypes and construct training data sets for genomic prediction. However, to ensure the success of targeted breeding, they must include the high frequency agricultural drought environments that occur within the on-farm Target Population of Environments (TPEs). Enviromics and Phenomics technologies have advanced and can be

Quantitative studies of plant growth and environmental responses increasingly rely on time-series imaging, yet automated segmentation remains challenging due to continuous growth, large non-rigid morphological change, and frequent self-occlusion. Traditional image-processing pipelines and task-specific deep learning models often require extensive annotated datasets and retraining, limiting portability across species, developmental stages, and imaging conditions. Here we present SAP (Segment Any Plant), a plant-focused framework that leverages the pretrained Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM2) to e

Acid phosphatases, both intracellular and secretory, play a crucial role in maintaining phosphate (Pi) homeostasis in plants. Using an integrated omics approach in Pi-deficient tomato seedlings, we identified SlPAP26b as a prominent candidate potentially involved in Pi remobilization from senescing to developing tissues, supported by its strong transcript accumulation in leaves and roots and pronounced induction during leaf senescence. Both SlPHR1 and SlPHL1, the two main tomato MYB-CC domain transcription factors of the Pi starvation response, directly activated the transcription of SlPAP26b

Most chloroplast proteins are synthesized in the cytosol as precursor proteins carrying N-terminal transit peptides that mediate post-translational import into the organelle. During this transient cytosolic phase, precursor proteins are exposed to the cellular N-terminal processing machinery, including methionine aminopeptidases and N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs). Recent proteomic studies have provided direct evidence that plastid precursor proteins undergo N-terminal acetylation prior to import, establishing a previously unrecognized link between co-translational processing and plastid

Photosynthetic thermal tolerance is commonly quantified by heating leaves in darkness, although extreme leaf temperatures in natural canopies occur under irradiance. If light modifies physiological responses to heat stress, dark-based assays may misrepresent thermal vulnerability, yet the magnitude and predictability of light effects remain poorly resolved across species. Here, I examined how sub-saturating light alters photosynthetic thermal tolerance across 36 tropical plant species by characterizing full temperature response curves of PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm). Light exposure reshaped thermal

PREMISE: Clonality is widespread among plants, yet the processes governing genetic diversity within the most ancient clones remains understudied. We investigated these dynamics using a reputed 10,500-year-old clonal stand of one of the world's longest-lived tree species, the paleoendemic conifer Lagarostrobos franklinii at Mt Read in Western Tasmania.
METHODS: To quantify the clone's spatial extent and map its underlying genetic structure and gain insights into its origin, we used unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and two complementary genetic data sets including nuclear simple seq

The functionality of the UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS8 (UVR8) has been widely demonstrated in angiosperms under controlled conditions, but studies in nature or using bryophytes are scarce. To fill this gap, we compared the UV responses of the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha and a mutant lacking a functional UVR8, to provide for the first time an evolutionary perspective of UVR8 performance in both controlled and field conditions. Under exposure to UV in the laboratory, UVR8 in wild type plants was essential to induce the expression of genes (CHS1, FNSI, HY5, SIG5, and ELIP2) an

Dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB) transcription factors play an important role in plant responses to drought. DREB subfamily A4 contains a subgroup named TINY. Previous studies in Arabidopsis suggest that TINYs suppress plant growth and mediate abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure. In this study, we investigated the function of the tomato drought-induced TINY1. Under drought conditions, the tiny1 mutant lost turgor and wilted more rapidly than control M82 plants. However, this sensitivity was attributed to its larger leaf area, rather than intrinsic differences in drought r

Plants constantly experience partial hypoxia due to varying external oxygen availability and the existence of hypoxic niches, such as the shoot apical meristem, phloem or root nodules. Waterlogging experiments indicate that hypoxic stress at the root does not only lead to a local metabolic response, such as the accumulation of hypoxia-related metabolites, but also causes metabolic alterations in the normoxic shoot. Moreover, hypoxia-related metabolites are exported from the hypoxic root towards the normoxic shoot, where they can be recycled. Maintaining import of glycolytic substrates from the

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a central analytical approach in plant science, supporting prediction, pattern discovery, and integration across molecular, phenotypic, and environmental data. While methodological advances have been rapid, progress is increasingly constrained less by algorithms than by the structure, semantics, and interoperability of the underlying data. In this review, we examine how the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles are currently realized in AI-driven plant research and how different implementations shape which AI analyses are fe

Plants live in a physical world governed by a multitude of mechanical processes which vary over time. The unique features of plant cells, which are turgor-inflated objects surrounded by the cell wall, present an intricate perception and response system for mechanical forces. A powerful tool to investigate how plants adapt and react to these cues is Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), which can provide information about surface morphology as well as mechanical properties. In the context of cell wall biomechanics, there remains some controversy on appropriate AFM measurement practices and suitable us

In plants, hydrophobic extracellular polymers are precisely deposited within or onto the extracellular matrix at specific cell interfaces. Here, they serve as boundaries, barriers, and contact points with the environment. Classical examples include cuticles that coat plant organ surfaces and Casparian strips that regulate molecular exchanges between the root and the rhizosphere. The barrier functions of these structures were essential for the transition from water to land, the emergence of vasculature transport systems, and the development of resistant components such as bark, pollen walls and

Multiple studies have identified genes affecting grain morphology, yet their capacity to deliver yield gains under field conditions remains unclear. We performed a multiyear, multilocation factorial evaluation of GRAIN WIDTH2 (TaGW2) mutants in hexaploid wheat using BC4 near-isogenic lines, sowing-density treatments and semi-dwarfing RHT1 backgrounds. Loss-of-function mutations in TaGW2 increased grain size and thousand grain weight (TGW) additively; with the aaBBDD single mutant showing the most stable single-locus effect, while the aabbdd triple mutant achieved ∼20% higher TGW across twelve

Since their discovery as Rubisco-containing compartments >50 years ago, significant breakthroughs have advanced our understanding of carboxysome structure and function, and their centrality to cyanobacterial CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs). Within CCMs, cellular bicarbonate (HCO3-) is actively accumulated and maintained by a suite of HCO3- transporters and CO2-to-HCO3- conversion pumps to support carboxysome function. This elevation of cellular HCO3- is indispensable for the action of carboxysomes, as they rely entirely on concentrated HCO3- to generate internal CO2 for Rubisco. This revie

Photosynthesis is a complex sequence of physical, electrochemical, biochemical, and physiological processes that convert light energy and carbon dioxide into sugars. These sugars then provide the energy and carbon backbone for all metabolic pathways involved in plant growth and development. However, if light energy is not managed effectively within the thylakoid membrane, it can destroy the photosynthetic apparatus in an oxygenic environment generated by photosynthesis itself. Effective photoprotection requires a variety of partially overlapping regulatory mechanisms that control energy and el

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants primarily fix atmospheric CO2 at night and store it as malic acid in their vacuoles. During daytime, the vacuolar malate is remobilised and decarboxylated to supply CO2 for Rubisco assimilation. Light intensity and photoperiod play crucial roles in regulating this process, but their influences on the underlying molecular and biochemical mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, physiological, biochemical, and molecular approaches were integrated to uncover the temporal patterns and light responsiveness of gene transcript and protein abundances, and the

Nitrogen is the pivotal macronutrient for grain protein synthesis, which is important in human nutrition and the establishment of derived products. However, nitrogen metabolism in plants is likely to be susceptible to abiotic factors such as those derived from climate change: drought, elevated [CO2], and temperature. How the triple interaction of these factors will affect nitrogen metabolism and grain quality of cereals is unknown. This study aimed to determine the response of nitrogen metabolism in barley-one of the temperate cereals most tolerant to abiotic stresses-to the triple interaction
