Epidemiology of shoulder and elbow injuries in National Collegiate Athletic Association wrestlers, 2009-2010 through 2013-2014.

OBJECTIVES: Examination of the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries in the collegiate wrestling population is limited. Therefore, we sought to determine the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries in wrestlers competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and investigate the risk factors involved. METHODS: All shoulder and elbow injuries in wrestlers from the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years in the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program database were extracted. The incidence of different injuries, sports, activity, time-in-game, competition status, and injury char

A novel anterior approach for the fixation of ulnar coronoid process fractures.

BACKGROUND: There is no universally accepted approach to the elbow for the fixation of coronoid process fractures. This study aims to introduce a novel anterior surgical approach for the fixation of the ulnar coronoid fracture, with minimal surgical dissection damage and excellent visualization for reduction and internal fixation. HYPOTHESIS: The anterior approach can facilitate satisfactory outcomes for coronoid process fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From February 2010 to July 2014, 12 patients (8 males and 4 females; range 14-62years; mean age 31years) with a closed fracture of the coron

Fixation of the coronoid process in elbow fracture-dislocations.

BACKGROUND: Terrible triad injuries consist of a posterior dislocation of the elbow, a coronoid fracture, and a radial head fracture. The coronoid plays a pivotal role as an anterior buttress, yet the optimal management of the coronoid fracture remains unknown. We hypothesize that suture lasso fixation of the coronoid fracture leads to fewer complications and improved outcomes compared with screw or suture anchor fixation techniques. METHODS: A retrospective chart review performed at three tertiary care centers identified forty consecutive patients treated for terrible triad injuries of the e

The effectiveness of diagnostic imaging methods for the assessment of soft tissue and articular disorders of the shoulder and elbow.

There are no clear guidelines for diagnostic imaging of articular and soft tissue pathologies of the shoulder and elbow. Several methods are used, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) and ultrasound (US). Their cost-effectiveness is still unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of the relevant literature and discussed the role of MR imaging of the shoulder and elbow compared with other diagnostic imaging modalities. For the shoulder impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears, MRI and US have a comparable accuracy for detection of full-thickness rotat

Alpine ski injuries and their prevention.

Alpine skiing is a popular sport with significant risk of injury. Since the 1970s, injury rates have dropped from approximately 5 to 8 per 1000 skier-days to about 2 to 3 per 1000 skier-days. The nature of the injuries has also been transformed over the same period. Lower leg injuries are becoming less common while the incidence of knee sprains and upper extremity injuries is becoming more common. Much of this change can be attributed to advancements in binding technology, which effectively reduces lower leg injury, but does not adequately address the issue of knee sprains. Along with design,

Extra-articular fractures of the proximal phalanges of the fingers: a comparison of 2 methods of functional, conservative treatment.

PURPOSE: For nonsurgical treatment of fractures of the proximal phalanges of the triphalangeal fingers, different dynamic casts have been described. The main principle behind these casts is advancement and tightening of the extensor hood, caused by a combination of blocking the metacarpophalangeal joints in flexion and actively flexing the proximal interphalangeal joints. In contrast to established treatment protocols using functional forearm casts, the Lucerne cast allows for free mobilization of the wrist joint. The purpose of the current multicenter study was to compare the results of conse

Functional and radiographic outcomes after surgical management of complex proximal ulna fractures: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: Complex proximal ulna fractures (including comminuted olecranon fractures and fracture-dislocations of the elbow) pose challenging management due to concomitant injuries to key stabilizers (radial head, coronoid process, and collateral ligaments). This study evaluates functional and radiographic outcomes following surgical treatment and explores the prognostic value of associated injuries, age stratification, and a new coronoid-centric classification system. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 43 patients with complex proximal ulna fractures treated between 2019 and 2024, with a

Flexor Pronator Slide Under Local Anesthesia without a Tourniquet for Non-Ischemic Contractures of the Forearm.

BACKGROUND: The flexor pronator slide is an effective treatment option for ischemic contracture and contracture related to spastic cerebral palsy, but little is known about the use of the flexor pronator slide in other non-ischemic contractures. I propose a flexor pronator slide to simultaneously correct wrist and finger flexor contractures and preserve the muscle resting length. To avoid overcorrection of the deformity, I propose the use of a wide-awake local anesthesia with no tourniquet (WALANT) procedure, in which the patient is able to continually assist the surgeon in assessing the contr

Long-term results of open extensive débridement arthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis of the elbow: what direct examination and computed tomography images revealed.

BACKGROUND: Although open and arthroscopic débridement arthroplasties are major surgical strategies in patients with primary osteoarthritis of the elbow, the long-term results remain inadequately studied. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate long-term clinical and radiographic results after extensive débridement arthroplasty (EDA) for primary osteoarthritis of the elbow. METHODS: Eleven patients with primary osteoarthritis treated with EDA were able to be retrospectively evaluated by direct examination. The mean age of the seven male and four female patients was 56 years (range, 47-74 year

Operative management of posterolateral rotatory instability in females: favorable 6-year outcomes in primary and revision elbows.

BACKGROUND: Posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) is an instability pattern due to injury of the radial ulnohumeral ligament (RUHL) or lateral ulnar collateral ligament complex of the elbow. Recent literature has demonstrated that females may be more predisposed to this condition due to elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone. The purpose of this study was to analyze patient-reported outcome measures and return to a preinjury level of function for females who underwent operative management for PLRI. METHODS: All females who underwent surgical management of the elbow at a single acad

Terrible triad injuries of the elbow: does the coronoid always need to be fixed?

BACKGROUND: The "terrible triad" of the elbow is a complex injury that can lead to pain, stiffness, and posttraumatic arthritis if not appropriately treated. The primary goal of surgery for these injuries is to restore stability of the joint sufficient to permit early motion. Although most reports recommend repair and/or replacement of all coronoid and radial head fractures when possible, a recent cadaveric study demonstrated that type II coronoid fractures are stable unless the radial head is removed and not replaced. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this study were to determine the (1) r
