Utilization of organic residues using heterotrophic microalgae and insects.

Various organic residues occur globally in the form of straw, wood, green biomass, food waste, feces, manure etc. Other utilization strategies apart from anaerobic digestion, composting and incineration are needed to make use of the whole potential of organic residues as sources of various value added compounds. This review compares the cultivation of heterotrophic microalgae and insects using organic residues as nutrient sources and illuminates their potential with regard to biomass production, productivity and yield, and utilization strategies of produced biomasses. Furthermore, cultivation

[Migration and Transformation Mechanism of Veterinary Antibiotics Based on the Returning Livestock and Poultry Manure to the Field Soil].

With the promotion of resource utilization of livestock and poultry manure, veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in manure can enter the soil environment during the process of returning to the field, posing ecological risks. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately grasp the migration and convergence process of VAs in the soil environment for ecological risk prevention and control. However, most of the current studies focus on the distribution and removal technologies of VAs in returned soil, lacking a systematic summary of the migration and transformation mechanisms of VAs in returned soi

From waste to nutrition: valorization strategies for surplus and ugly produce within the Food Use and Waste Hierarchy.

Fruit and vegetables (F&Vs) account for approximately 50% of global food loss and waste (FLW). This represents an environmental and economic burden, as well as a significant, yet often overlooked concern for human nutrition. At the farm level, surplus (products for which there is no buyer) and "ugly produce" (products rejected for failing aesthetic standards) are often discarded or diverted for low value uses, such as composting or animal feed, despite retaining a good nutritional and functional quality. Current valorization frameworks, including the EU Food Use and Waste Hierarchy (FUWH), pri

Suppression of carbon footprint through the CO2-assisted pyrolysis of livestock waste.

Concentrated animal feeding operation facility in modern livestock industry is pointed out as a point site causing environmental pollution due to massive generation of manure. While livestock manure is conventionally treated through biological processes, composting and anaerobic digestion, these practices pose difficulties in achieving efficient carbon utilization. To address this, this study suggests a pyrolytic valorization of livestock manure, with a focus on enhancing syngas production. Hen manure was particularly chosen due to its abundance of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) compared to other m

Achieving a Biocircular Economy in the Aquaculture Sector Through Waste Valorization.

Aquaculture wastewater treatment not only assists in alleviating the scarcity of clean water for daily usage and environmental pollution, but also generates valuable byproducts. This paper aims to review the generation of wastewater from the aquaculture sector, its characteristics, and available treatment technologies, while comprehensively discussing the adoption of a biocircular economy approach through waste valorization. With rich nutrients, such as nitrogenous compounds, and the presence of phosphorus in the aquaculture effluent, these aspects could be explored and valorized into bioferti

Lessons Learned from Air Quality Assessments in Communities Living near Municipal Solid Waste Landfills.

Over 292 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are generated annually in the United States, with more than half disposed of in landfills. Municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLFs) are stationary sources of air pollution and potential health risks for nearby communities. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has completed over 300 public health assessments (PHAs) and related investigations at MSWLFs and open dumps since the 1980s. This paper reviews the ATSDR's evaluations of air pathway concerns at 125 MSWLF sites assessed between 1988 and early 2025, with many bein

Effects of microbial deodorizer on pig feces fermentation and the underlying deodorizing mechanism.

Microbial deodorization is a novel strategy for reducing odor in livestock and poultry feces. Herein, 12 strains of ammonia (NH3) and 15 hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removing bacteria were obtained with a removal efficiency of 65.20-79.80% and 34.90-79.70%, respectively. A novel bacteria deodorant named MIX (Bacillus zhangzhouensis, Bacillus altitudinis, and Acinetobacter pittii at a ratio of 1:1:2) were obtained. MIX can shorten the temperature rising stage by 2 days and prolong the thermophilic stage by 4 days. The ability of MIX to remove NH3, H2S, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and the underlyi

Effects of litter from antimicrobial-fed broiler chickens on soil bacterial community structure and diversity.

This study examined changes in soil bacterial community composition and diversity in response to fertilization with litter from chickens fed a diet without antibiotics and with bambermycin, penicillin, bacitracin, salinomycin, or mix of salinomycin and bacitracin. Litter (27.5 T/ha) was applied to 24 agricultural plots in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. Nonfertilized plots were used as a negative control. Soil samples collected from the studied plots were used to quantify Escherichia coli by plate counts, and Clostridium perfringens by qPCR. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed fo

Chlortetracycline alters microbiota of gut or faeces in pigs and leads to accumulation and migration of antibiotic resistance genes.

In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term use of chlortetracycline (CTC) on the gut microbiota composition and metabolism profiles in pigs, and the variation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial communities in faeces and manure during aerobic composting (AC) and anaerobic digestion (AD). The pigs were fed the same basal diet supplemented with or without 75 mg/kg CTC, and fresh faeces of 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-day-old pigs were collected from the CTC group. The results showed that CTC reduced the diversity of the gut microbiota significantly and changed its structure

Comparative study of vermicomposting of garden waste and cow dung using Eisenia fetida.

Vermicomposting is the process of composting using worms and is applied in waste management to produce high-quality organic fertilizer. Garden waste (GW) is often mixed with other raw materials for vermicomposting. In the present study, the feasibility of vermicomposting using only GW was investigated in comparison with cow dung (CD). The total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK) contents and the electrical conductivity increased, while total organic carbon (TOC) and the C/N ratio decreased in both substrates after vermicomposting. The nutrient content (TN, TP, and T

Remediation approaches for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soils: Technological constraints, emerging trends and future directions.

For more than a decade, the primary focus of environmental experts has been to adopt risk-based management approaches to cleanup PAH polluted sites that pose potentially destructive ecological consequences. This focus had led to the development of several physical, chemical, thermal and biological technologies that are widely implementable. Established remedial options available for treating PAH contaminated soils are incineration, thermal conduction, solvent extraction/soil washing, chemical oxidation, bioaugmentation, biostimulation, phytoremediation, composting/biopiles and bioreactors. Whole-genome sequencing, phenotypic characterization, and antifungal susceptibility profiles of three Aspergillus hortae clinical isolates from Colombia.

The Aspergillus genus comprises fungi that are widely distributed in nature. Several Aspergillus sections are important for recycling organic matter; while the Fumigati section is classically associated with compost, the Terrei section also plays a relevant role in this process. Aspergillus hortae is a species from this section that has been isolated from clinical samples, but its role as a pathogenic agent is unclear. In this study, we analysed three clinical isolates of A. hortae from Colombia, initially misidentified as A. terreus. Morphological characterization at 26 °C and 37 °C confirmed

Novel biosurfactants produced from food waste: a variability and validation study.

One-third of global food production is wasted, much of which is composted, gasified or landfilled. This food waste (FW) represents an untapped resource, particularly towards the production of biosurfactants. Genetically engineered Starmerella bombicola yeast strains offer a route to produce novel biosurfactants on FW with enhanced structural diversity, such as bola sophorosides. However, FW streams are variable, and often contain inhibitory compounds (e.g. lactic acid (LA), ethanol, etc.), posing bioprocessing challenges. Here we show that hydrolyzed FW consistently supports S. bombicola growt

The effect of WWTP products amendments on Phaseolus vulgaris rhizosphere and its ability to inactivate clarithromycin.

With increasing efforts to reuse wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) products in agriculture, assessing their impact on soil-plant systems is crucial, while the effects of accompanying antibiotic residues on soil microbial communities have not yet been adequately studied. This study focuses on clarithromycin (CLR), highly present in wastewater, and investigates the CLR-degradation potential of plant-associated microorganisms. Phaseolus vulgaris plants were grown in raised beds filled with Haplic Cambisol and amended with or without WWTP products (treated wastewater, biosolid, or composted biosol

From outbreak of COVID-19 to launching of vaccination drive: invigorating single-use plastics, mitigation strategies, and way forward.

The unforeseen outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic has significantly stipulated the use of plastics to minimize the exposure and spread of the novel coronavirus. With the onset of the vaccination drive, the issue draws even more attention due to additional demand for vaccine packaging, transport, disposable syringes, and other allied devices scaling up to many million tonnes of plastic. Plastic materials in personal protective equipment (PPE), disposable pharmaceutical devices, and packaging for e-commerce facilities are perceived to be a lifesaver for the frontline healthcare personnel and the

Protein Hydrolysates from Biogenic Waste as an Ecological Flame Retarder and Binder for Fiberboards.

The increasing demand for sustainable building materials requires alternative flame retarders, which have superior sustainability to those previously used. In this respect, we present our initial results with protein hydrolysates made from poultry-feather waste for the preparation of flame-retardant fiberboards. Impregnated wood fibers show a significantly decreased decomposition rate in the region between 300 and 450 °C, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis. Final combustion of the impregnated fibers is shifted up by 50 °C to the interval 450-500 °C and occurs stepwise rather than instan

Effects of inoculation amount and application method on the biodrying performance of municipal solid waste and the odor emissions produced.

The effects of inoculation amount and application method on the biodrying of municipal solid waste (MSW) was investigated in this study. Results showed that a low level (5%) of inoculation with mature compost significantly improved the biodrying index (4.96), while adding greater amounts decreased the biodrying performance by increasing the volatile solid degradation rate. Covering the pile with inoculation material resulted in the highest water removal (72.7%) and greatest water content reduction (from 60.2% to 17.7%). Meanwhile, first covering and then incorporating the inoculation material
