Transdiagnostic body dissatisfaction: comparing adolescents with anorexia nervosa and depression during body exposure.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction (BD) is a risk factor for and a maintaining factor of Anorexia nervosa (AN). Furthermore, BD is associated with depressive symptoms. Body exposure (BE) was found to be an effective intervention for reducing BD. The current study aimed to investigate similarities and differences in BD between patients with AN and depressive symptoms and the efficacy of a computerized BE in those adolescents. METHODS: We compared adolescents with AN (n = 36) to adolescents with depression and high body dissatisfaction (n = 21; DBD group). BD was assessed with questionnaires; val

"I am ashamed that I exist. I feel like apologizing for existing": The phenomenology of shame in patients with borderline personality disorder: A qualitative study.

Shame is an essential affect in many patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and can be associated with most of the BPD diagnostic criteria. Severe shame is a highly aversive emotion with concomitant beliefs about the self as deeply inferior, insignificant, disgusting, and unloved. Shame and how it is manifested in the subjective experience and behavior in people diagnosed with BPD is remarkably under-researched, and our knowledge of the phenomenology of shame in BPD needs to be improved. Severe shame is often less accessible and available to conscious awareness, making it difficul

Did Kant suffer from misophonia?

Misophonia is a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds, often produced by humans but not always, which can trigger intense emotional reactions (anger, disgust etc.). This relatively prevalent disorder can cause a reduction in the quality of life. The causes of misophonia are still unclear. In this article, we develop a hypothesis suggesting that misophonia can be caused by a failure in the organization of the perceived world. The perceived world is the result of both the structure of human thought and the many conditioning factors that punctuate human life, particularly social cond

Difficulties with emotion regulation moderate the relationship between child maltreatment and emotion recognition.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation (ER) and emotion recognition (ERC) deficits are frequently observed in the sequelae of child maltreatment (CM). Despite a wealth of research on emotional functioning, these emotional processes are often presented as independent but related functions. As such, there is currently no theoretical framework on how different components of emotional competence, such as ER and ERC, may be related to one another. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to empirically assess the relationship between ER and ERC by examining the moderating role of ER in the relationship between C

Swedish and Norwegian Police Interviewers' Goals, Tactics, and Emotions When Interviewing Suspects of Child Sexual Abuse.

As the suspect interview is one of the key elements of a police investigation, it has received a great deal of merited attention from the scientific community. However, suspect interviews in child sexual abuse (CSA) investigations is an understudied research area. In the present mixed-methods study, we examine Swedish (n = 126) and Norwegian (n = 52) police interviewers' self-reported goals, tactics, and emotional experiences when conducting interviews with suspected CSA offenders. The quantitative analyses found associations between the interviewers' self-reported goals, tactics, and emotions

Determination of Dyadic Adjustment, Marriage and Sexual Satisfaction as Risk Factors for Women with Lifelong Vaginismus: A Case Control Study.

This study was conducted to assess dyadic adjustment, marriage, and sexual satisfaction as risk factors for women with lifelong vaginismus. This is a case-control study. A total of 142 women were included in the study: 71 women with a diagnosis of lifetime vaginismus constituted the study group and 71 women without a history of vaginismus/painful sexual activity constituted the control group. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), the Marriage Satisfaction Scale (MSS), and the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS). Recognition of children's emotional facial expressions among mothers reporting a history of childhood maltreatment.

Several studies have shown that child maltreatment is associated with both positive and negative effects on the recognition of facial emotions. Research has provided little evidence of a relation between maltreatment during childhood and young adults' ability to recognize facial displays of emotion in children, an essential skill for a sensitive parental response. In this study, we examined the consequences of different forms of maltreatment experienced in childhood on emotion recognition during parenthood. Participants included sixty-three mothers of children aged 2 to 5 years. Retrospective

Facial Muscle Activity Recognition with Reconfigurable Differential Stethoscope-Microphones.

Many human activities and states are related to the facial muscles' actions: from the expression of emotions, stress, and non-verbal communication through health-related actions, such as coughing and sneezing to nutrition and drinking. In this work, we describe, in detail, the design and evaluation of a wearable system for facial muscle activity monitoring based on a re-configurable differential array of stethoscope-microphones. In our system, six stethoscopes are placed at locations that could easily be integrated into the frame of smart glasses. The paper describes the detailed hardware desi

Re-Examining Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Virtual Reality-Based Exposure for Spider Phobia.

The proposed study aims at expanding results from a previous study on mechanisms of change after exposure in virtual reality (VR) and documenting the impact of adding tactile and haptic feedback. It was predicted that change in the severity of spider phobia according to the Fear of Spiders Questionnaire (FSQ) would be significantly predicted by change in dysfunctional beliefs toward spiders and self-efficacy, over and above the variance explained by a physiological measure of fear during exposure (heart rate) and presence during the immersion. Participants (N = 59) were randomly assigned to th

Patients' views on fecal microbiota transplantation: an acceptable therapeutic option in inflammatory bowel disease?

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) represents a new therapeutic option that has been studied in two randomized-controlled trials in ulcerative colitis patients. Our study aimed to identify patients' views on the use of this novel therapeutic approach. METHODS: Using an anonymous questionnaire, we obtained data from 574 inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients on their knowledge and willingness to undergo FMT. RESULTS: A large proportion of IBD patients (53.5%) are unaware that FMT is a therapeutic option in Clostridium difficile infection and potentially IBD. More responders

Minors, Moral Psychology, and the Harm Reduction Debate: The Case of Tobacco and Nicotine.

Harm reduction debates are important in health policy. Although it has been established that morality affects policy, this article proposes that perspectives from moral psychology help to explain the challenges of developing evidence-based policy on prohibition-only versus tobacco/nicotine harm reduction for minors. Protecting youth from tobacco is critical, especially since tobacco/nicotine products are legal for adults, who usually begin using when young. Although cigarettes and other combustibles are the deadliest tobacco products, other products such as smokeless tobacco and electronic cig

Deliberately generated and imitated facial expressions of emotions in people with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: People with eating disorders have difficulties in socio emotional functioning that could contribute to maintaining the functional consequences of the disorder. This study aimed to explore the ability to deliberately generate (i.e., pose) and imitate facial expressions of emotions in women with anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: One hundred and three participants (36 AN, 25 BN, and 42 HC) were asked to pose and imitate facial expressions of anger, disgust, fear, happiness, and sadness. Their facial expressions were recorded and coded

Testing the antidepressant properties of the peptide ARA290 in a human neuropsychological model of drug action.

Studies on the neural effects of Erythropoietin (EPO) indicate that EPO may have antidepressant effects. Due to its hematopoietic effects, EPO may cause serious side-effects with repeated administration if patients are not monitored extensively. ARA290 is an EPO-analog peptide without such hematopoietic side-effects but may have neurotrophic and antidepressant effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible antidepressant effects of ARA290 in a neuropsychological model of drug action. Healthy participants (N=36) received ARA290 (2mg) or placebo in a double-blind, randomized, par

Anorexia nervosa and its relation to depression, anxiety, alexithymia and emotional processing deficits.

PURPOSE: Psychopathological changes and dysfunction in emotion processing have been described for anorexia nervosa (AN). Yet, findings are applicable to adult patients only. Furthermore, potential for discriminative power in clinical practice in relation to clinical parameters has to be discussed. The aim of this study was to investigate psychopathology and emotional face processing in adolescent female patients with AN. METHODS: In a sample of 15 adolescent female patients with AN (16.2 years, SD ± 1.26) and 15 age and sex matched controls we assessed alexithymia, depression, anxiety and emp

Nausea and the quest for the perfect anti-emetic.

The discovery of anti-emetic agents is reviewed to illustrate the large database (>129,000 papers in PubMed) available for potential data mining and to provide a background to the shift in interest to nausea from vomiting. Research on nausea extends to identification of biomarkers for diagnosis/clinical trials and to understanding why nausea is such a common dose-limiting toxicity of diverse therapeutic agents. The lessons learned for translation from animals to humans, from the discovery of the anti-vomiting effects of 5-HT3 and NK1 receptor antagonists, is discussed in terms of the similarit

[Fighting the flu with soap and water. Hand washing as an infection control recommendation to the population--7 hypotheses from a qualitative study about hygiene, flu and pandemic].

Medical interventions like vaccination and antiviral prophylaxis are only two ways of protecting the population from infectious diseases. A third and decisive method is to apply non-pharmaceutical interventions like hand hygiene. A qualitative study identified the role hand washing actually plays in the daily life of the population. Based on the results, seven hypotheses are proposed which point to the need for further research about promotion of hand hygiene, e.g. the conception and evaluation of hand washing advertising campaigns. HYPOTHESIS 1: Health tips are more likely to be followed if t

Children's discrimination of expressions of emotions: relationship with indices of social anxiety and shyness.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct an exploratory investigation of possible relationships between individual levels of social anxiety and the ability to classify emotional expressions in a group of schoolchildren observing pictures of children of similar age. METHOD: One hundred forty-nine second- and third-grade schoolchildren underwent a facial expression discrimination trial. Children were characterized on the basis of the number of spontaneous comments they made during a pause in the trial, and on their scores on the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Stevenson-Hinde and Glover Shyness-to-the-Unfamil

The effects of archistriatal lesions on one-trial passive avoidance learning in the chick.

The avian archistriatum, part of which may be homologous with the mammalian amygdala, has been implicated in fear and avoidance behaviour. There is also evidence to suggest its involvement in learning. One-trial passive avoidance learning (PAL) has been used extensively to study memory formation in the chick. Young chicks will peck spontaneously at a small, visually conspicuous bead. If the bead has been coated with an aversive substance, the chicks show a disgust response and learn in a single trial not to peck a similar bead on subsequent presentation. Successful acquisition of this one-tria

Black males who always use condoms: their attitudes, knowledge about AIDS, and sexual behavior.

One hundred six black males completed a questionnaire concerning attitudes and knowledge about the use of condoms and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Of the 106 males in the study, 27 (26%) reported that they "always" used condoms, 31 (29%) did not use condoms and had low intentions of using them, and 48 (45%) reported high intentions to use condoms. Results indicated that knowledge about AIDS was exceptionally high for black males in all three groups. Black males with low intentions to use condoms reported significantly more negative attitudes about the use of condoms (eg, using co

The Wall Gang: a study of interpersonal process and deviance among twenty-three middle-class youths.

This paper reports the findings of a nonparticipant observational study of a "gang" of late-adolescent, middle-class youths in a Southern California beach community over an 11-year period. The significance of family background, interpersonal relationships in the home, and socialization processes were explored in relation to such factors as the use of drugs, sexual experiences, and other "deviant" behavior. The author also interviewed and interacted with other youths in the community of the same age range and similar socioeconomic background who were not members of the "gang." Case narration is
