Quality of life in schizophrenia and dysthymia.

Quality of life (QOL) was assessed in three groups of patients, consisting of 30 schizophrenic patients with duration of illness <2 years, 30 schizophrenic patients with duration of illness > or = 2 years and 30 dysthymic patients. The diagnoses were made according to ICD-10. Two scales of quality of life were used, one of which was specific for schizophrenia, while the other was generic for all patients. On inter-group comparison the two schizophrenia groups did not show significant differences in quality of life, but on comparing schizophrenic and dysthymic patients, significant differences

Prevalence and recognition of depressive disorders among Chinese older adults receiving primary care: A multi-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there have been increasing calls for integrating late-life mental health services into primary care in China, but data on the epidemiology of depressive disorders in older adults receiving primary care are very limited. This study examined prevalence, correlates and recognition of depressive disorders among Chinese older adults receiving primary care. METHODS: A total of 752 older patients (65+ years) were consecutively recruited from 13 primary care clinics in Wuhan, China, and interviewed with the Chinese Mini-international Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0. Clinical significance of long-term psychoanalytic treatment.

The present study evaluated the clinical significance of long-term psychoanalytic treatment in four groups of about 60 patients in different phases of treatment (before, during, after, follow-up) with normative comparisons on four symptom questionnaires (SCL-90, BDI-II, STAI, IIP-64) and two personality assessment instruments (MMPI-2, Rorschach-CS). In each group, the proportion of patients with clinically elevated scores was calculated by comparing their scores with clinical and nonclinical reference groups for each instrument. The authors also calculated a combined percentage of clinically e

Long-term depression versus episodic major depression: results from the prospective Zurich study of a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have demonstrated a great clinical relevance of long-term depression (LTD). Our study aims to characterise LTD in comparison with episodic (non-chronic) major depressive episodes (MDE) on the basis of data from a community sample. METHOD: The Zurich Cohort Study is a prospective study of young adults followed from age 20/21 to 40/41 with six interviews. The stratified sample consisted of two thirds high scorers and one third lower scorers on the Symptom Checklist-90 R (SCL-90-R). LTD was assessed from age 27/28 to 40/41 and defined as being symptomatic more days t

Reduced orexin levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of suicidal patients with major depressive disorder.

Orexins are neuropeptides selectively expressed in a small number of neurons in the lateral-posterior hypothalamus. We measured orexin-A in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 66 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymia and adjustment disorder after a suicide attempt. Blood samples confirmed that the patients were free from antidepressive and neuroleptic medication at the time of the lumbar punctures. CSF levels of orexin-A were significantly lower in patients with MDD than in patients with adjustment disorder and dysthymia. Orexin correlated significantly with CSF levels of somat

A case of "double" depression under outpatient treatment conditions.

During his professional practice the author encountered a case of coexistence of "major depression" with psychic depressive attacks (dysthymic attacks) of so-called temporal epilepsy. Apart from major depression of medium intensity, other manifestations developed. These were independent of the time of the day, suddenly occurring within several seconds, developing without any cause, attacks of very strong dejection, sadness, breakdown, feeling of lacking sense and hopelessness of life with slight lessening of consciousness and strong groundless fear. Detailed psychiatric examinations, observati

The validity of dysthymia to predict clinical depressive symptoms as measured by the Hamilton Depression Scale at the 5-year follow-up of patients with first episode depression.

BACKGROUND: In long-term follow-up studies on depression, the Eysenck Neuroticism Scale (ENS) at the score level of dysthymia has been found to be valid at predicting poor outcome. AIMS: The ENS dysthymia level was compared with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) level to predict the prevalence of depressive symptoms at the 5-year follow-up of patients initially diagnosed with first episode depression using the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) to express depressive symptoms. METHODS: A total of 301 in- or outpatients aged 18-70 years with a recent single depressive episode were assessed by

Depression and bone mineral density in young adults: results from NHANES III.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this cross-sectional population-based study was to assess the association of major depressive episode (MDE) and dysthymia with bone mineral density (BMD) in young adults. METHODS: Data are from a nationally representative sample of 5,171 people aged 20 to 39 years from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Total proximal femoral BMD was measured using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. MDE and dysthymia were measured using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. RESULTS: MDE was associated with lower BMD in multivariate models in men (mean BMD = 1.03

Predictors of nonresponse to treatment in primary care patients with dysthymia.

Dysthymia is one of the most prevalent problems in primary care, especially in the elderly. In this study, we evaluated the demographic and clinical predictors of nonresponse to treatment in primary care patients with dysthymia. The study sample consisted of 338 primary care patients meeting DSMIII-R criteria for dysthymia from 4 diverse geographic sites in a randomized controlled 11-week trial of paroxetine, problem-solving therapy or placebo. Patients who attended at least 4 treatment sessions were used in the analysis. A score of less than 7 on the Hamilton was defined as a positive respons

Psychological disorders and dental anxiety in a young adult population.

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that some individuals who are fearful or anxious about dental treatment have a constitutional vulnerability to anxiety disorders as evidenced by the presence of multiple fears, generalized anxiety or panic disorders. This paper compares the prevalence of psychological disorders among dentally anxious and non-anxious groups drawn from the general population. METHODS: Data were obtained as part of a birth cohort study when study members were aged 18 years. They were assessed using the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) and the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Differences in the association between persistent pathogens and mood disorders among young- to middle-aged women and men in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: A growing literature supports the role of immune system alterations in the etiology of mood regulation, yet there is little population-based evidence regarding the association between persistent pathogens, inflammation and mood disorders among younger women and men in the U.S. METHODS: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III on individuals 15-39 years of age assessed for major depression, dysthymia, and/or bipolar disorder I and tested for cytomegalovirus (N=6825), herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 (N=5618) and/or Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) (N=31

Long-term outcome of patients with dysthymia and panic disorder: a naturalistic 9-year follow-up study.

The highly prevalent psychiatric disorders dysthymia and panic disorder have often a chronic or recurrent course with superimposed major depression. The prominent comorbidity between these diagnoses constitutes a confounding factor in the study of long-term outcome. We performed a 9-year follow-up of 38 patients with "pure" diagnoses, i.e. without comorbid dysthymia and panic disorder, selected from two 2-year naturalistic treatment studies with psychotherapy and antidepressant medication. The aims of the present study were to investigate 1) the stability of change, and 2) the impact of comorb

Anxiety and depressive disorders and the five-factor model of personality: a higher- and lower-order personality trait investigation in a community sample.

We describe in detail normal personality traits in persons with psychiatrist-ascertained anxiety and depressive disorders in a general population sample. We investigated Revised NEO Personality Inventory traits in 731 community subjects examined by psychiatrists with the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry. All of the lifetime disorders of interest (simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and dysthymia) were associated with high neuroticism. Social phobia, ago

Incremental Benefit-Cost of MOMCare: Collaborative Care for Perinatal Depression Among Economically Disadvantaged Women.

OBJECTIVE: Effectiveness of collaborative care for perinatal depression has been demonstrated for MOMCare, from early pregnancy up to 15 months postpartum, for Medicaid enrollees in a public health system. MOMCare had a greater impact on reducing depression and improving functioning for women with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than for those without PTSD. This study estimated the incremental benefit and cost and the net benefit of MOMCare for women with major depression and PTSD. METHODS: A randomized trial (September 2009 to December 2014) compared the MOMCare collaborative c
