A previous study showed that the susceptibility of hybrids between two Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus did not apply to every parasite. The authors proposed that only parasites which exerted enough constraints would induce the selection of poorly compatible systems of resistance in the subspecies. This study completes the previous work. Experimental infections of mice of the two subspecies and their hybrids with the tissue-dwelling protozoan Sarcocystis muris show that hybrids are more susceptible to the coccidian than M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus individuals. BACKGROUND: Parasitic infections are among the most common diseases worldwide, and enterobiasis is a well-known type of parasitic infection in children. Given the existence of several reports on the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis in different provinces of Iran and the heterogeneity of the reported prevalence data, this study aims to investigate the overall prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis among children in Iran through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis study involved a comprehensive search of several databases, including PubMe

The morbidity of intestinal parasitic infections is greatest among children of school age and may have an adverse effect on growth. In the present, cross-sectional study, the association between previously undiagnosed intestinal parasitic infections and growth was assessed in 19,209 children attending elementary schools in Tehran. The physical growth of these children was investigated by recording body weights, heights and weight-for-age Z scores. Faecal samples were collected and each checked for intestinal parasites using four methods (the microscopical examination of a smear stained with Lu

When enterobiasis cases were treated with anthelmintics only for one time, the interval to recurrence was variable by different drugs used. And this phenomenon is supposedly connected with biological or developmental cycle of the worm and the consequent efficacy of the different anthelmintics. This study was undertaken to confirm this fact by studying the expelled worms morphologically to correlate the anthelmintics efficacy and stage of worm development in Enterobius vermicularis. A total of 131 children in 3 orphanages was examined by 4 anal swabs (mean positive rate, 80%). They were randomi

Helminth infections caused by Enterobius vermicularis have a cosmopolitan character and most often affect the paediatric pre-school and school age population. The presented study was conducted to determine the prevalence of E. vermicularis in the analyzed population of children in the Eastern Slovakia. The Graham's scotch tape method was used to investigate the presence of Enterobius vermicularis eggs in 390 specimens. The analyzed set consisted of 218 girls and 172 boys, divided by age into three groups - aged from 5 months to 2 years, aged from 3 to 6 years, and aged from 7 to 15 years. Inve

OBJECTIVE: Enterobius vermicularis also known as pinworm is one of the most common parasitic infestations in humans. Repeated cycles of reinfection make it difficult to eradicate. Therefore, this study was planned to determine the efficacy of drugs in achieving remission and preventing recurrences of pinworm infestation.
METHODS: This was an open-label randomized controlled trial conducted from March to August 2025 at Karaikal, Puducherry. Children aged 2-12 years (n = 126) with confirmed pinworm infestation were randomized to one of the three groups (1:1:1)- albendazole (400 mg stat dose), m

Enterobius vermicularis typically affects children, while Helicobacter pylori is associated with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Reports of E. vermicularis infection in geriatric patients are exceedingly rare, and recovery of the adult worm in stool specimens is unusual. We describe an 82-year-old male on long-term corticosteroids who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms. Stool microscopy demonstrated E. vermicularis, and H. pylori infection was confirmed by rapid urease test, PCR, and histopathology. The patient responded to Albendazole and standard H. pylori eradication thera

Preschool children in the Kingdom of Eswatini are excluded from the national school-based deworming programme and had never been surveyed for parasitic infection. During June 2019 we conducted a cross-sectional baseline survey of 261 children (mean age 4.8 ± 0.75 years) attending 16 kindergartens and community care points across 4 provinces. Enterobius vermicularis was sought on peri-anal cellophane/Scotch-tape swabs (n = 261); Schistosoma haematobium in single urine specimens by the chamber-tube microscope-slide (CTMS) sedimentation method (n = 232); and intestinal helminths and protozoa in s

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis) using anal tape technique in four different primary schools in the town of Kayseri.
METHODS: For this purpose, cellophane-tape samples were collected from a total of 438 students. Of all the students, 229 (52.2%) are female and 209 (47.7%) are male. In this study, the relationship between E. vermicularis and the parameters such as school, gender, residential structure, bathroom, water source, parents' monthly income, the number of rooms and members in the house and some symptoms such as

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal infestation with the parasite Enterobius vermicularis is common in humans and is usually harmless. Anal pruritus is the most characteristic symptom, but the parasites can cause severe abdominal pain mimicking appendicitis. Early recognition can prevent an unnecessary appendectomy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A six-year-old girl reported to the accident and emergency department with pain in the lower right abdominal region. She was admitted and treated for suspected perforated appendix, following physical examination supplemented with an abdominal CT scan. After antibiotic t

The most frequent disorders of the Bartholin glands are cysts or abscesses. Bartholin gland abscesses occur generally as a result of polymicrobial infections or agents that cause sexually transmitted diseases. But as far as we know, no parasite has been previously reported among the infectious agents that are detected from the abscesses of the Bartholin gland. Here, we report a 45-year-old woman, in the Bartholin abscess aspirate of whom Enterobius vermicularis eggs were detected in between the inflammatory infiltrate by cytological examination.

This review summarizes findings from toxicologic, carcinogenic, immunologic, and metabolic studies on fenbendazole (FBZ). Currently, FBZ is used to treat or prevent pinworm outbreaks in laboratory rodents. Because antiparasitic treatments usually are not part of experimental designs, interactions from the medication on the outcomes of ongoing experiments are a concern. At therapeutic levels, FBZ does not alter the total content of cytochromes P450 but does induce certain hepatic cytochrome P450 isoforms, namely 1A1, 1A2, and 2B1. Although expressed constitutively at low or undetectable levels,

The objective of this study is to evaluate the incidence of Enterobius vermicularis in the appendices of the adult population and a possible relationship between E. vermicularis and acute appendicitis. E. vermicularis was identified in 18 (2%) of 890 patients. Six hundred sixty-five operations were performed for presumptive diagnosis of acute appendicitis, and E. vermicularis was found in 12 (2%) patients. The histopathological examination revealed acute inflammatory cells in four cases (33%). Three of these four specimens included luminal ova and one E. vermicularis. Histopathological examina

The association between parasitic infection of the appendix and acute appendicitis has been widely investigated. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of parasitic infection of the appendix in a tropical area at southeast Brazil and to assess its possible relation to acute appendicitis in surgically removed appendices. Of the 1,600 appendectomies performed during a 10-year period, 24 (1.5%) were found to have helminths within the appendix. Enterobius vermicularis was observed in 23 of the 24 specimens (95.8%), and Taenia sp. was detected in only one case. Sixteen p

BACKGROUND: Pruritus ani is a common presenting problem in general practice, one that is particularly distressing to patients. However, there is little available research on which to base management
OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the causes and management of this distressing symptom based on thecurrent available evidence.
DISCUSSION: Perianal itch probably arises from localised inflammation. This may be the result of anorectal disease, skin disorders, excessive cleaning, application of local irritants or other causes. In children, perianal itch may be caused by intestinal hermetic Infecti

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is one of the most common human parasitic helminths, and children are the most susceptible group. Some behavioral and environmental factors may facilitate pinworm infection. In the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), the status of pinworm infections among children remains unknown.
METHODS: In Majuro City, there are 14 kindergartens with a total of 635 preschool children (PSC) whose age range of 5~6 years. The present investigation attempted to determine the pinworm prevalence and associated risk factors as well as investigate whether eggs cont
