Environmental Drivers of Geographic Isolation in Three Pika Species in Northeast Asia.

Geographic segregation among closely related species may arise from divergent environmental preferences or constraints of interspecific interactions. For these three congeneric pika species in northeastern Asia, the relative contributions of these mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates three congeneric species: Ochotona coreana, Ochotona mantchurica, and Ochotona hyperborea, to identify how environmental gradients and interspecific niche relationships jointly shape their spatial segregation. We combined public records with field survey to build species distribution models

Contrasting Growth and Physiological Response Profiles of Three Native Alpine Elymus Forage Grasses Under Combined Cadmium and PEG-6000-Induced Osmotic Stress.

The co-occurrence of soil drought and cadmium (Cd) pollution represents an important combined-stress scenario in degraded alpine grasslands, yet comparative responses of native Elymus forage grasses remain poorly resolved. Seedlings of E. sibiricus cv. Chuancao, E. breviaristatus, and E. nutans cv. Gannan were exposed to a full-factorial hydroponic matrix of four nominal Cd concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg·L-1) and four PEG-6000 concentrations of 0, 5, 7.5, and 10% (w/v). Growth, biomass allocation, tissue water status, malondialdehyde (MDA), soluble sugars, antioxidant enzyme activities, a

Modelling tick bite risk by combining random forests and count data regression models.

The socio-economic and demographic changes that occurred over the past 50 years have dramatically expanded urban areas around the globe, thus bringing urban settlers in closer contact with nature. Ticks have trespassed the limits of forests and grasslands to start inhabiting green spaces within metropolitan areas. Hence, the transmission of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases is an important threat to public health. Using volunteered tick bite reports collected by two Dutch initiatives, here we present a method to model tick bite risk using human exposure and tick hazard predictors. Our meth

Dietary Stress From Plant Secondary Metabolites Contributes to Grasshopper (Oedaleus asiaticus) Migration or Plague by Regulating Insect Insulin-Like Signaling Pathway.

Diets essentially affect the ecological distribution of insects, and may contribute to or even accelerate pest plague outbreaks. The grasshopper, Oedaleus asiaticus B-Bienko (OA), is a persistent pest occurring in northern Asian grasslands. Migration and plague of this grasshopper is tightly related to two specific food plants, Stipa krylovii Roshev and Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel. However, how these diets regulate and contribute to plague is not clearly understood. Ecological studies have shown that L. chinensis is detrimental to OA growth due to the presence of high secondary metabolites,

Decoupling environmental effects and host population dynamics for anthrax, a classic reservoir-driven disease.

Quantitative models describing environmentally-mediated disease transmission rarely focus on the independent contribution of recruitment and the environment on the force of infection driving outbreaks. In this study we attempt to investigate the interaction between external factors and host's population dynamics in determining the outbreaks of some indirectly transmitted diseases. We first built deterministic and stochastic compartmental models based on anthrax which were parameterized using information from literature and complemented with field observations. Our force of infection function w

Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of allelopathic responses in Elymus nutans.

To explore the allelopathic response mechanism of Elymus nutans to the extracts of Ligularia sagitta, seed germination tests combined with integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses were performed to systematically investigate the effects of the extracts at different concentrations on its germination characteristics and molecular metabolism. The results showed that the concentration range of 0.01-0.10 mg/mL was the sensitive interval for the allelopathic response of Elymus nutans to the extracts of Ligularia sagitta, and germination energy (GE) exhibited higher sensitivity to allelopathi

[Interpretability-driven Analysis of Carbon Storage in the Yellow River Delta Based on SHAP-XGBoost Model].

Ecosystem carbon storage is an indicator of climate change. Exploring the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics and driving mechanism of carbon storage can provide natural solutions to climate change. Based on the five-period land use data of the Yellow River Delta from 1980 to 2020, the InVEST model was used to analyze the spatial and temporal differentiation characteristics of terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage in the Yellow River Delta. The CA-Markov model was coupled to predict the carbon storage of terrestrial ecosystems in the Yellow River Delta under the two scenarios of natu

GHG emissions from recent peat forest disturbances: A driver-specific analysis across Indonesia, Peru, and DRC.

Consistent data on tropical peat forest disturbances and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain limited. We quantified and compared driver-specific GHG emissions from aboveground biomass (AGB) loss, peat decomposition and fire from peat forest disturbances in Indonesia, Peru, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over 2020-2021. Direct drivers were identified through visual interpretation of Planet (4.77 m) and Sentinel-2A (10 m) imagery for 1000 randomly sampled disturbance events per country. We estimated CO2 emissions from AGB loss using pre-disturbance data from the Climate Chan

Prevalence and genetic diversity of intestinal parasites in Xilingol League herbivores, Inner Mongolia, Northern China.

Intestinal parasites are common infectious agents that substantially impact the health and productivity of livestock, with several species posing zoonotic risks. In this study, 205 fecal samples were collected from cattle, sheep, and goats in Xilingol League. Microscopic examination was performed to detect Eimeria spp., nematodes, and trematodes, whereas nested polymerase chain reaction assays were used to identify Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., and Enterocytozoon bieneusi. The results showed that the overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 80.5% (165/205) among herbivores, w

SFTSV Prevalence in Ticks and Livestock in an SFTSV-Endemic Area in Central China.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne bunyavirus that causes a severe viral hemorrhagic fever (SFTS), with a very high case mortality rate, expanding epidemic areas, and increasing incidence. Due to the lack of an effective drug or vaccine for SFTS, reducing the incidence and mortality of SFTS primarily relies on decreasing the density of ticks and the number of their host animals. However, which tick species and vertebrate animal serve as the major reservoir and animal host of SFTSV are not clearly understood. In May of 2023 and June of 2024, we c

Rapid adaptation to a globally introduced virulent pathogen in a keystone species.

Emerging infectious diseases are one of the foremost contemporary threats to biodiversity conservation. Outbreaks of novel pathogens can lead to the extinction of host populations, loss of gene flow due to extirpation, and bottlenecks in host populations with surviving individuals. In outbreaks with survivors, pathogens can exert strong selection on hosts, in some cases leading to the evolution of resistance or tolerance in the host population. The pathogen causing sylvatic plague, Yersinia pestis, was introduced to North America in the early 1900s and caused widespread population declines in

Commensal Rodent Habitat Expansion Enhances Arthropod Disease Vectors on a Tropical Volcanic Island.

On volcanic islands, the release of animals from predators and competitors can lead to increased body size and population density as well as the expanded habitat use of introduced animals relative to their mainland counterparts. Such alterations might facilitate the spread of diseases on islands when these exotic animals also carry pathogenic agents; however, this has rarely been investigated. The commensal Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) is confined to human residential surroundings in mainland Taiwan but can be observed in the forests of nearby Orchid Island, which is a tropical volcanic i

The spatial heterogeneity between Japanese encephalitis incidence distribution and environmental variables in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: To identify potential environmental drivers of Japanese Encephalitis virus (JE) transmission in Nepal, we conducted an ecological study to determine the spatial association between 2005 Nepal JE incidence, and climate, agricultural, and land-cover variables at district level. METHODS: District-level data on JE cases were examined using Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) analysis to identify spatial clusters from 2004 to 2008 and 2005 data was used to fit a spatial lag regression model with climate, agriculture and land-cover variables. RESULTS: Prior to 2006, there wa

Short-term impact of low air pressure on plants' functional traits.

Lower atmospheric pressure affects biologically relevant physical parameters such as gas partial pressure and concentration, leading to increased water vapor diffusivity and greater soil water content loss through evapotranspiration. This might impact plant photosynthetic activity, resource allocation, water relations, and growth. However, the direct impact of low air pressure on plant physiology is largely unknown. This study examined the effects of low air pressure, alone and combined with two water inputs, on different functional traits of three plant species transplanted from montane grass

Variation in the Chemical Sensitivity of Earthworms from Field Populations to Imidacloprid and Copper.

The chemical risk of pesticides for nontarget soil macroorganisms has mainly been assessed using the compost earthworm Eisenia fetida. However, E. fetida does not occur in agroecosystems, and it is generally less sensitive than other earthworm species. Thus, the extrapolation of its response to pesticides to other earthworm species may lead to uncertainties in risk assessment. Because toxicity data for other earthworms are scarce, we assessed the chemical sensitivity of five species (Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Aporrectodea rosea, and Lumbricus rubell

Evidence-based advice on timing and location of tsetse control measures in Shimba Hills National reserve, Kenya.

Controlling tsetse flies is critical for effective management of African trypanosomiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa. To enhance timely and targeted deployment of tsetse control strategies a better understanding of their temporal dynamics is paramount. A few empirical studies have explained and predicted tsetse numbers across space and time, but the resulting models may not easily scale to other areas. We used tsetse catches from 160 traps monitored between 2017 and 2019 around Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kenya, a known tsetse and trypanosomiasis hotspot. Traps were divided into two groups: pro

Genomic evidence for two pathways of formaldehyde oxidation and denitrification capabilities of the species Paracoccus methylovorus sp. nov.

Three strains (H4-D09T, S2-D11 and S9-F39) of a member of the genus Paracoccus attributed to a novel species were isolated from topsoil of temperate grasslands. The genome sequence of the type strain H4-D09T exhibited a complete set of genes required for denitrification as well as methylotrophy. The genome of H4-D09T included genes for two alternative pathways of formaldehyde oxidation. Besides the genes for the canonical glutathione (GSH)-dependent formaldehyde oxidation pathway, all genes for the tetrahydrofolate-formaldehyde oxidation pathway were identified. The strain has the potential to

Global patterns of soil gross immobilization of ammonium and nitrate in terrestrial ecosystems.

Microbial nitrogen (N) immobilization, which typically results in soil N retention but based on the balance of gross N immobilization over gross N production, affects the fate of the anthropogenic reactive N. However, global patterns and drivers of soil gross immobilization of ammonium (INH4 ) and nitrate (INO3 ) are still only tentatively known. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis considering gross N production rates, soil properties, and climate and their interactions for a deeper understanding of the patterns and drivers of INH4 and INO3 . By compiling and analyzing 1966 observations
