Needle-use declarations at the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

AIM: We report on the results of the 'IOC Needle Policy' applied during the course of the Games of the XXXI Summer Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The policy was intended to empower physicians to ensure appropriate clinical use of needles within team medical environments, enhance the safety of those responsible for housekeeping services and others in the Olympic environment, and permit documentation of such procedures as an adjunct to the doping control programme. Any needle use required the submission of an 'Injection Declaration Form' to IOC medical officials. METHOD: All 'Injection Dec

Microinstability of the Hip and the Splits Radiograph.

A normal hip has a natural tendency toward stability because of both osseous and soft tissue structures. Hip motion is primarily rotational around a center of rotation. When the femoral head and its center of rotation translate, with or without rotation, the inherent stability of the femoroacetabular articulation may be lost. The spectrum of hip instability ranges from subtle microinstability to traumatic dislocation. Microinstability may be the cause or the effect of several other hip pathologies. Soft tissue contributions to stability include the static capsule, dynamic musculotendinous unit

ROLLING REVISITED: USING ROLLING TO ASSESS AND TREAT NEUROMUSCULAR CONTROL AND COORDINATION OF THE CORE AND EXTREMITIES OF ATHLETES.

UNLABELLED: Rolling is a movement pattern seldom used by physical therapists for assessment and intervention with adult clientele with normal neurologic function. Rolling, as an adult motor skill, combines the use of the upper extremities, core, and lower extremities in a coordinated manner to move from one posture to another. Rolling is accomplished from prone to supine and supine to prone, although the method by which it is performed varies among adults. Assessment of rolling for both the ability to complete the task and bilateral symmetry may be beneficial for use with athletes who perform

Cyclic Sciatica and Back Pain Responds to Treatment of Underlying Endometriosis: Case Illustration.

BACKGROUND: Multiple causes outside the spine can mimic spinal back pain. Endometriosis is an important gynecologic disorder, which commonly affects the lower region of the female pelvis and less frequently the spine and soft tissues. The lumbosacral trunk is vulnerable to pressure from any abdominal mass originating from the uterus and the ovaries. Therefore symptoms of endometriosis include severe reoccurring pain in the pelvic area as well as lower back and abdominal pain. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on a 39-year-old gymnast with cyclic sciatica and back pain, whose initial presentation in

Air trapping and arboreal locomotor adaptation in primates: a review of experiments on humans.

A review was made of experiments on humans in which air trapping by glottis closure during three-dimensional movements were examined in four subjects including former Olympic gymnasts. In brachiation and horizontal bar exercises, the behaviour of the larynx was monitored with a fiberoptic endoscope, and EMG-data were recorded from shoulder muscles. The results revealed that immobilization of the polyaxial connection between the shoulder girdle and the thorax by air trapping occurs in phases of extreme loading of the upper limbs. The closure of the airway by the larynx in humans serves three fu
