Although most species of wasps are solitary and no hazard to humans, attacks by colonies of large social wasps of the family Vespidae, which commonly are known as hornets, can result in envenomation with severe toxicity. The effects of such envenomation on six persons from Papua New Guinea are described and discussed in the light of other published reports from Melanesia, Asia, Europe and America. Four deaths and at least four cases of acute renal failure occurred. Vespa affinis (L.), 1764 was responsible for at least two deaths and Vespa tropica (L.), 1764 for one death. The ecology of vespid

Profuse hemostatic defects were demonstrable 14 hr after wasp sting anaphylaxis. The patient's plasma contained an agent or agents that interfered with the action of thrombin, impeding the release of fibrinopeptide A from fibrinogen and the hydrolysis of the synthetic amide H-D-prolyl-L-phenylalanyl-L-arginine p-nitroanilide. This inhibitor could not be equated with known plasma inhibitors of thrombin nor with heparin. Additionally, the titers of nearly all other known clotting factors were reduced as compared to levels obtained after the patient's recovery. Of particular interest were profoun

Spodoptera exigua, which feeds on various crops worldwide, has natural enemies that are susceptible to the insecticides used against S. exigua. We investigate the toxicity and residue risk of 9 insecticides on the development of H. axyridis, C. sinica, S. manilae and T. remus. S. manilae and T. remus adults were sensitive to all 9 insecticides (LC50 less than 2.75 mg a.i. liter-1), while H. axyridis and C. sinica adults were less sensitive (LC50 between 6 × 10-5 mg a.i. liter-1 and 78.95 mg a.i. liter-1). Emamectin benzoate, spinosad, indoxacarb, alpha-cypermethrin, chlorfenapyr and chlorantra

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Venom immunotherapy has proven to be a very effective method for the prevention of future re-sting reactions. However, initiation of the venom injection program is just the beginning. This review looks at recent papers which shed light on other issues that arise during maintenance venom immunotherapy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Prophylactic antihistamines taken before venom injections reduce the frequency of reactions and one report suggests that they may improve efficacy. The schedule of venom injections usually does not have to be adjusted for patients who develop local reactions;

Readily available information as to the management of arthropod bites, stings, and infestations is important to have but often difficult to find. This article brings such information together in one reference for use by the practicing pediatrician, dermatologist, and family practitioner. Preventive measures are stressed and therapy is outlined for each entity; the rationale for many of the interventions is discussed. It is not the intent of this paper to cover each subject comprehensively.

Beekeepers often present allergic symptoms and represent a natural and experimental model of anaphylaxis and specific immunotherapy. Two hundred BKs were investigated. Both allergic and nonallergic subjects were selected very carefully in terms of immunologic status and exposure to bee stings. They were surveyed by a questionnaire, the titration of total serum IgE, and bee venom-specific IgE and IgG. Skin tests to HBV were performed in 176 subjects. Skin test sensitivity to HBV and allergic symptoms were significantly (p less than 0.0001) related to the estimated number of annual stings. BKs d

Parasitic interactions play a central role in shaping insect diversity; however, many host-parasite associations remain poorly documented, particularly among Diptera. Species of Forcipomyia (Microhelea) are known ectoparasites of other insects, yet information on their host associations is still fragmentary. The Fuliginosa species-group is known to be ectoparasite of larvae of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. In this study, we present the first global synthesis of ectoparasitism by Forcipomyia (Microhelea), Fuliginosa species-group, on caterpillars, integrating literature records with data obtaine

Digger wasps are solitary apoid wasps that excavate ground nests and use venom to paralyze insect prey. Recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that digger wasps belong to an ancient lineage of aculeate Hymenoptera and share an evolutionary ancestry with other venomous hymenopterans, including bees and ants. Although the venoms of ants, bees, and social wasps have been extensively studied, those of digger wasps remain poorly characterized in terms of their composition, molecular diversity, and biological activity. In this study, we investigated the venom of the digger wasp Cerceris japonica using

With the global increase in population aging, allergic diseases in older adults are becoming an increasingly relevant clinical and public health challenge. Age-related molecular and cellular alterations significantly affect the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of major allergic diseases in the elderly. This review focuses on immunosenescence in major allergic conditions, including asthma, chronic urticaria and angioedema, dermatitis, food and drug allergies, and hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity. Particular emphasis is placed on molecular mechanisms underlyi

The encyrtid parasitoid, Diversinervus elegans (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), is a natural enemy of the notorious scale pests belonging to the family of Coccidae. Venom containing a rich source of bioactive molecules is a key virulent factor used to regulate host physiology by parasitoids. Although knowledge regarding venom constituents accumulated from limited parasitoids has provided insights into their roles in host-parasitoid interaction, toxins involving in manipulating scale physiology remain sparsely documented. Here, a total number of 48 putative venom proteins were identified from D. eleg

Myrmecia pilosula is an endemic Australian ant whose sting is a frequent cause of insect allergy in southeast Australia, and several deaths due to M. pilosula sting envenomation have been documented. In this review, we discuss the composition and bioactivity of M. pilosula venom. In addition to various enzymes and pharmacologically active constituents, the venom contains four families of highly basic low molecular weight peptides trivially named Pilosulins. These peptides are unique and have low structural homology to other Hymenoptera venom peptides. Moreover, M. pilosula venom is relatively

Assessment of patients with unexplained hypotensive episodes in outpatient practice is often challenging, with an extensive differential diagnosis. The prevalence of systemic mast cell disease (MCD) is unknown, and the diagnosis is often elusive because serum and urine markers may become positive only after one of the self-limited, recurrent hypotensive episodes. Nevertheless, MCD is increasingly recognized as a cause of unexplained hypotension, secondary osteoporosis, and anaphylactic reactions to Hymenoptera stings. We describe a 38-year-old man who had a 15-year history of undiagnosed, recu

Data abstracted from 34 death certificates indicate that the three venomous animal groups most often responsible for human deaths in California from 1960 through 1976 were Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants and the like) (56 percent), snakes (35 percent) and spiders (6 percent). An average incidence of 2.0 deaths per year occurred during these 17 years, or an average death rate of 0.01 per 100,000 population per year. Nearly three times more males than females died of venomous animal bites and stings. Half of the deaths from venomous snake bites occurred in children younger than 5 years of age. Su

Localized skin necrosis after bee and wasp stings is an exceptionally rare phenomenon, with few reported cases documented in the literature. Hymenoptera stings, including those from wasps, bees, and stinging ants, are common worldwide and typically result in localized reactions such as pain, erythema, and swelling. Although systemic complications, including anaphylaxis and multiorgan damage, are well recognized, localized skin necrosis remains poorly understood. In this study, we present a rare case of localized dermal necrosis in a 75-year-old woman with no systemic involvement after a yellow

Most of the encounters with biting and stinging insects result in more or less pronounced localized reactions. Typically, urticarial wheals and papular reactions are observed. Less often local bullous or hemorrhagic or disseminated papular reactions, particularly in children and immunologically naive adults, may be seen. With the exception of bee and wasp venom allergies, immediate-type allergic reactions to arthropod stings and bites are rare. Systemic IgE-mediated hypersensitivity has also been reported from additional hymenoptera species, e.g. hornets, bumble bees and ants. Rare are systemi

BACKGROUND: Hereditary alpha tryptasemia (HαT) is found in approximately 7% of the population. Associations with a variety of clinical symptoms including gastric reflux, joint hypermobility, dysautonomia, flushing and pruritus, and hymenoptera allergy have variably been described in prior reports. However, our understanding of this genetic trait is limited by a paucity of published studies, referral bias, and conflicting findings at clinical presentation.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical phenotype of HαT in a random biorepository population and in patients with

Insects of the order Hymenoptera have a defensive substance that contains many biologically active compounds. Specifically, venom from honeybees (Apis mellifera) contains many enzymes and peptides that are effective against various diseases. Different research papers stated the possibility of using bee venom (a direct bee sting or in an injectable form) in treating several complications; either in vivo or in vitro. Other reports used the active fractions of bee venom clinically or at labratory scale. Many reports and publications have stated that bee venom and its constituents have multiple bi

Allergen immunotherapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of allergic children. The clinical efficiency relies on a well-defined immunologic mechanism promoting regulatory T cells and downplaying the immune response induced by allergens. Clinical indications have been well documented for respiratory allergy in the presence of rhinitis and/or allergic asthma, to pollens and dust mites. Patients who have had an anaphylactic reaction to hymenoptera venom are also good candidates for allergen immunotherapy. Administration of allergen is currently mostly either by subcutaneous injections or by subli

Mastocytosis is a clonal disorder characterized by the proliferation and accumulation of mast cells (MC) in different tissues, with a preferential localization in skin and bone marrow (BM). The excess of MC in mastocytosis as well as the increased releasability of MC may lead to a higher frequency and severity of immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Mastocytosis in adults is associated with a history of anaphylaxis in 22-49%. Fatal anaphylaxis has been described particularly following hymenoptera stings, but also occasionally after the intake of drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory dr
