Epidemiological association in US veterans between Gulf War illness and exposures to anticholinesterases.

To investigate complaints of Gulf War veterans, epidemiologic, case-control and animal modeling studies were performed. Looking for OPIDP variants, our epidemiologic project studied 249 Naval Reserve construction battalion (CB24) men. Extensive surveys were drawn for symptoms and exposures. An existing test (PAI) was used for neuropsychologic. Using FACTOR, LOGISTIC and FREQ in 6.07 SAS, symptom clusters were sought with high eigenvalues from orthogonally rotated two-stage factor analysis. After factor loadings and Kaiser measure for sampling adequacy (0.82), three major and three minor sympto

Prevention of tungiasis and tungiasis-associated morbidity using the plant-based repellent Zanzarin: a randomized, controlled field study in rural Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, a parasitic skin disease caused by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans, is a prevalent condition in impoverished communities in the tropics. In this setting, the ectoparasitosis is associated with important morbidity. It causes disfigurement and mutilation of the feet. Feasible and effective treatment is not available. So far prevention is the only means to control tungiasis-associated morbidity. METHODOLOGY: In two villages in Central Madagascar, we assessed the efficacy of the availability of closed shoes and the twice-daily application of a plant-based repellent act

Knowledge and Prevention Practices among U.S. Pregnant Immigrants from Zika Virus Outbreak Areas.

We administered an anonymous survey to assess knowledge, attitudes, and prevention practices related to the Zika virus among pregnant women residing in Texas. Multivariate logistic regression models controlling for age, race/ethnicity, education, and number of years in the United States assessed differences between women born in outbreak areas (N = 390) versus those born in the United States (N = 249). Results demonstrated that most women wanted more information on the Zika virus and desired to obtain it from their physician. The majority did not know that the Zika virus could be spread throug

Spatial dispersal of Lutzomyia longipalpis in an urban area under deltamethrin collars intervention.

In the Americas, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by infection with Leishmania infantum, which has the domestic dog as its main reservoir in urban areas and is transmitted through the bite of infected female Lutzomyia longipalpis. VL has been expanding geographically in Brazil, and prevention and control actions are essential to reduce the impact on populations affected by these neglected diseases. Since 2021, Brazil has implemented the use of deltamethrin-impregnated collars (DM) for the prevention and control of VL in priority municipalities, based on evidence of the effectiveness of th

Mucous droplets with multiple membranes in the accessory submandibular glands of long-winged bats.

BACKGROUND: Certain species of bats possess two sets of submandibular glands, namely, principal and accessory. The ultrastructure and histochemistry of the accessory submandibular gland was examined in three species of long-winged bats. METHODS: Specimens of Miniopterus schreibersi and M. magnator were live-trapped in Thailand, and of M. inflatus were live-trapped in Kenya. For electron microscopy, accessory submandibular lands were initially fixed in triple aldehyde-DMSO, postfixed in osmium tetroxide, and embedded in Epon-Maraglas. Longitudinal evaluation of structural brain alterations in two established mouse models of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) affects nearly 30% of veterans from the 1990-1991 Gulf War (GW) and is a multi-symptom illness with many neurological effects attributed to in-theater wartime chemical overexposures. Brain-focused studies have revealed persistent structural and functional alterations in veterans with GWI, including reduced volumes, connectivity, and signaling that correlate with poor cognitive and motor performance. GWI symptomology components have been recapitulated in rodent models as behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroinflammatory aberrations. However, preclinical structural imaging

Do vasoactive neuropeptide autoimmune disorders explain pyridostigmine's association with Gulf War syndrome?

Gulf War syndrome (GWS) is a perplexing multi-symptom condition comprising a constellation of signs and symptoms consistently described in the literature. These include muscle fatigue and tiredness, malaise, myalgia, impaired cognition, ataxia, diarrhoea, bladder dysfunction, sweating disturbances, headaches, fever, arthralgia, skin rashes, and gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances. Excessive chemical sensitivity and odour intolerance is reported. Epidemiological analysis suggests association with pyridostigmine bromide (PB) use as nerve gas prophylaxis, insect repellent, certain vaccination

Bio-pesticide applications may impair the pollination services and survival of foragers of honey bee, Apis cerana Fabricius in oilseed brassica.

Honey bees and brassica plants are co-evolved and due to the peculiar floral characters, mustard (Brassica juncea) plants are strongly dependent on bees for survival. Mustard is one of the most important oilseeds across the world. Insect pests often cause huge economic losses in mustard and their management, especially during flowering stage is very crucial to achieve maximum yield, although this step often displays undesirable effects on the foraging bees. Effects of synthetic pesticides on bees are widely documented and extensively reported. Although the numbers of pesticides/bio-pesticides

Analytical strategy based on the use of liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with triple-quadrupole and time-of-flight MS analyzers for investigating organic contaminants in wastewater.

The presence of a wide variety of organic pollutants with different physicochemical characteristics has been investigated in wastewater samples from a municipal solid-waste-treatment plant in Castellón, Spain. An advanced analytical strategy was applied--combined used of two powerful and complementary techniques, GC and LC, both hyphenated with tandem mass spectrometry with triple-quadrupole analyzers. The GC-MS-MS method was based on sample extraction using C(18) SPE cartridges and enabled the determination of approximately 60 compounds from different chemical families, for example PAHs, octy

Inverse association between dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus infection and indicators of household air pollution in Santa Rosa, Guatemala: A case-control study, 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses are increasingly important public health problems. Burning vegetation, leaves, and other plant products have been shown to be effective mosquito repellents for their vector, Aedes spp., but there has been scant research on whether firewood cooking smoke in households influences mosquito populations or mosquito-borne diseases. About 2.9 billion people worldwide use biomass fuel for household cooking and heating, resulting in an estimated 1.6 million deaths annually from household air pollution (HAP)-related diseases. Global health agencies now e

Subchronic dermal application of N,N-diethyl m-toluamide (DEET) and permethrin to adult rats, alone or in combination, causes diffuse neuronal cell death and cytoskeletal abnormalities in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, and Purkinje neuron loss in the cerebellum.

N,N-Diethyl m-toluamide (DEET) and permethrin have been implicated as potential neurotoxic agents that may have played an important role in the development of illnesses in some veterans of the Persian Gulf War. To determine the effect of subchronic dermal application of these chemicals on the adult brain, we evaluated histopathological alterations in the brain of adult male rats following a daily dermal dose of DEET (40 mg/kg in 70% ethanol) or permethrin (0.13 mg/kg in 70% ethanol) or a combination of the two for 60 days. Control rats received a daily dermal dose of 70% ethanol for 60 days. A

Exposure to West Nile virus during the 2002 epidemic in Cuyahoga County, Ohio: a comparison of pediatric and adult behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence suggests that children are at higher risk for West Nile virus (WNV) exposure, but may have a lower risk for infection-related morbidity and mortality. Limited data exist regarding risk determinants of childhood WNV infection. We conducted a survey to analyze the differences between pediatric and adult behavior relevant to WNV exposure. METHODS: Residents of participating sampled households responded to a questionnaire that measured knowledge, attitudes, personal protective behaviors, and clinical history to evaluate the association between personal behavior and e

Bending the curve: force health protection during the insertion phase of the Ebola outbreak response.

After >10 years of enduring operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Defence Strategic Direction is returning to a contingency posture. As the first post-Afghanistan operation, in September 2014, a UK Joint Inter-Agency Task Force deployed to Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa. The aims were expanding treatment capacity, assisting with training and supporting host nation resilience. The insertion phase of this deployment created a unique set of challenges for force health protection. In addition to the considerable risk of tropical disease and trauma,

A 35-year-old Caucasian woman, otherwise healthy, presented with a four weeks history of painful, inflammatory nodules, each with a central opening on her right lower leg (Figure 1). Intermittently, a marked serosanguinous secretion was noted. The remaining skin and mucosa were not affected. The patient denied any history of trauma. One month earlier she had returned from a journey to Peru. Despite topical treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics as well as systemic therapy with oral doxycycline, the lesions did not show any regression or reduction in their secretion.
