Psychobiotics are probiotic microorganisms that may exert positive influence on the psychological status of the host. Studies have revealed immunological and microbiological correlations of gut microbiota and the gut-brain axis, and have investigated psychobiotics based on the findings of the gut-brain axis. Considering their mode of actions, the present study sets anti-inflammatory effect, neurotransmitter modulation, and gut microbiota modulation as three essential criteria to evaluate Lactobacillus casei ATG-F1 (F1), L. reuteri ATG-F3 (F3), and L. reuteri ATG-F4 (F4) isolated from newborns

We immunohistologically examined the prevalence and localization of bacteria invading dentinal tubules of the roots of teeth with infected canals. Forty extracted teeth with apical lesions were selected and divided into two groups: a group of untreated teeth and a group of canal-enlarged teeth. The bacteria in the specimens were detected by Brown-Brenn stain and the labeled-streptavidin-biotin method with specific antisera for 16-bacteria. Seventy percent of the examined teeth showed bacteria invading the dentinal tubules of the roots. Fusobacterium nucleatum, Eubacterium alactolyticum, E. nod

In the antimicrobial therapy of denture stomatitis, it is desirable to inhibit the growth of not only the primary causative organism, Candida albicans, but also other oral bacteria closely associated with the condition. Three synthetic anti-candidal chalcones were characterized and compared for their additional activity in inhibiting these causative bacteria. Among the tested chalcones, 2,4,2'-trihydroxy-5'-methylchalcone showed the highest activity for different Gram-positive bacteria. It inhibited the growth of streptococci, staphylococci and lactobacilli at 25.0-50.0 micrograms/mL which was

Probiotics exert numerous beneficial effects on immunity, metabolic homeostasis, and intestinal health across species; however, their specific role in modulating semen quality and reproductive-related physiological parameters remains poorly understood. This study evaluates the effects of an orally administered multi-strain probiotic blend comprising Lacticaseibacillus casei, Bacillus subtilis, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum (1:1:1:1 ratio) on semen quality, antioxidant, immune, and inflammatory responses in rabbit bucks. A total of 33 male New Zealand white rabbits

BACKGROUND: SIRT1 (sirtuin 1), a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent protein deacetylase, regulates cardiovascular inflammation by modulating cellular stress, inhibiting NLRP3 (NLR family, pyrin domain-containing 3) activation, and promoting the clearance of damaged mitochondria. However, its precise role in the pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease, a pediatric systemic vasculitis that causes coronary artery aneurysms in children, remains unclear.
METHODS: Using the Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE) murine model of Kawasaki disease, we evaluated the severity of vasculitis in mi

Coeliac disease (CD) is a very common food-sensitive enteropathy, which is triggered by gluten ingestion and is mediated by CD4(+) T cells. In addition, alterations in the intestinal microbiota that is normally involved in the homeostasis of GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) seem to play a role in CD. In accordance with these findings, we previously reported that Lactobacillus casei can induce a strong enhancement of the T cell-mediated response to gliadin without inducing enteropathy. In this study, we analysed the effects of L. casei administration in a mouse model of gliadin-induced vil

Lactobacilli, often used as effectors of host functions, could play an important role in maintaining human health by controlling other intestinal microorganisms capable of producing harmful effects. Using an experimental model, we studied the effect of different oral doses of Lactobacillus casei on the secretory IgA response and the protective capacity of the microorganism in preventing intestinal infections. The optimization of the protective dose of Lb. casei by previous feeding and the use of the lactobacillus as an immunological way to control enteric infections were investigated. We found

UNLABELLED: Bacterial intestinal overgrowth syndrome (SIBO) treatment is based on antibiotics. Probiotics have been shown to give similar results, whilst no study is available about prebiotics. This study evaluated the addition of probiotics or prebiotics to antibiotics on SIBO symptoms in a 6-month follow-up. We enrolled 40 patients (14 males and 26 females) reporting abdominal compliant without gastrointestinal diseases/alarm symptoms. SIBO was diagnosed by the agreement of lactulose and glucose breath tests. Patients were randomly divided into two groups homogeneous for sex and age: group 1

Daily oral administration to rats of probiotic strain Lactobacillus casei 114001 (L.c.) at dose 2,8 x 10(10) cfu/rat during 8 days reduced oxidative stress and liver lesions, induced by a single intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) at dose 0.5 ml/kg b.w. It was evidenced by several histopathological and biochemical markers, characteristic for CCl4 toroxicity. Membrane damage by toxin was reduced in rats, treated with L.c.: alanine aminotransferase activity in plasma and nonsedimentable activity of lysosomal enzymes in liver were significantly decreased. Treatment with

Gram-positive bacterial pneumonia is a significant cause of hospitalization and death. Shortage of a good experimental model and therapeutic targets hinders the cure of acute lung injury (ALI). This study has established a mouse model of ALI using Gram-positive bacteria Lactobacillus casie cell wall extracts (LCWE) and identified the key regulator NLRP3. We show that LCWE induces TNF, NF-κB signaling, and so on pathways. Similar to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), LCWE induces the infiltration of CD11b-positive cells and inflammation in lungs. LCWE also triggers inflammatory signaling through TLR2, d

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease threatening the public health and hindering the trade of animals and their products, which has a negative impact on the economic development of a country. Vaccination is the most effective way to control brucellosis. The recombinant vector vaccines are promising candidates for immunization in humans and animals. In this study, the gene encoding OMP19 antigen was primarily amplified and cloned into an expression vector called pT1NX, and then transformed to L. casei cell via electroporation technique. The expression was confirmed using specific antibody against

As part of the human gastrointestinal tract, the oral cavity represents a complex biological system and harbors diverse bacterial species. Unlike the gut microbiota, which is often considered a health asset, studies of the oral commensal microbiota have been largely limited to their implication in oral conditions such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Less emphasis has been given to their potential beneficial roles, especially the protective effects against oral colonization by foreign or pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we used salivary microbiota derived from healthy human subject

BACKGROUND: The elimination of pulpal infection is critical for the success of vital pulp therapy (VPT) in mature permanent teeth with carious pulp exposure. However, commonly used pulp capping materials often possess inadequate antibacterial properties, which limits treatment success. This study aimed to develop a zinc-containing ionic liquid (IL-Zn)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) composite and evaluate its potential as an adjunctive pulp capping material for VPT.
METHODS: IL-Zn was characterized by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton n
