Evaluation of the effects of temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis with hyaluronic acid injection on mandibular condyles using fractal dimension analysis: A retrospective study.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of arthrocentesis with intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection on mandibular condyles using fractal dimension (FD) analysis. Patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement (ID) were divided into three groups according to how many times the arthrocentesis with HA injection was performed. FD analysis is a quantitative concept that provides information about trabecular bone microstructures. Regions of interest were selected from bone areas close to the articular surfaces of the right and left condyles on panoramic radiographs, w

Identification of Causative Variants Contributing to Nonsyndromic Orofacial Clefts Using Whole-Exome Sequencing in a Saudi Family.

Objectives: Nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs) are the most common craniofacial malformations observed across the globe. They are classified into three types: (a) cleft palate, (b) cleft lip, and (c) cleft lip and palate. To identify the potential candidate genes contributing to polygenic diseases such as NSOFC, linkage analyses, genome-wide association studies, and genomic rearrangements can be used. Genomic analyses, based on massively parallel next-generation sequencing technologies, play a vital role in deciphering the genetic bases of NSOFCs. Materials and Methods: In this study, whol

Histologic changes in dental morphology induced by high dose chemotherapy and total body irradiation.

Disturbances in dental development were studied with the use of radiography and histology in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who was treated with induction chemotherapy at 2.3 years of age and bone marrow transplantation at 4.3 years of age. The follow-up 9.5 years after bone marrow transplantation showed evidence of short tapered roots, enamel hypoplasia, microdontia, and aplasia. A histologic examination of two extracted permanent teeth showed that the crown of the maxillary lateral incisor exhibited numerous incremental lines that corresponded closely to the treatment periods wi

New application of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of deglutitive tongue movement.

BACKGROUND: Deglutitive motion of the tongue may function to maintain tooth position. However, the causation between abnormal patterns of orofacial muscle function and dental malocclusion remains unclear. To clarify the pathogenic mechanism of malocclusion, it is important to determine the relative positional relationship between the tongue tip and incisor edge or the dorsal tongue and palate during deglutition. Here, we assessed the utility of 3-T segmented cine-magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, combined with static MR images for hard tissue visualization, in assessing the relationship between

Is unilateral tonsillar enlargement alone an indication for tonsillectomy?

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral tonsillar enlargement is often seen in the out-patient setting. Frequently, these patients are listed for tonsillectomy for the purpose of ruling out malignant histology. This study aims to determine the necessity for tonsillectomy. METHOD: This retrospective case-note review looks at all the tonsillectomies performed for histological examination at our institution over a five year period, and analyses the histological findings in those with unilateral tonsillar enlargement (UTE) alone, and those with UTE with other clinical features (history of chronic pain, dysphagi

Preserved costal cartilage homograft application for the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint has been a daunting problem in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Condylectomy with gap arthroplasty is the basic technique for treatment of the fully grown patient. In the past, reconstruction has primarily been accomplished with alloplastic materials or with autogenous tissue harvested from the patient. Joints reconstructed with alloplastic materials have been subject to complications such as acute infection and chronic inflammatory problems as a result of foreign-body reaction with the immune system. Biologic reconstruction with autogenous materials doe

Vertical Maxillary Movement Is Associated With Incisal Display in Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary incisal display (MID) is a key feature in orthodontic and orthognathic surgical planning that critically impacts esthetics and forms the basis for the vertical positioning of the maxilla. In orthognathic surgical planning, several approaches are taken to position the maxilla to determine the MID, but little evidence exists in the relationship between maxillary movement and MID. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the association between MID and maxillary movements in maxillary orthognathic surgery. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: This was a retrospectiv

Dentigerous Cyst and Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: A Rare Combination of Coexisting Pathologies.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common developmental cystic lesion of the jaws. Histologically, these cysts derive from the odontogenic epithelium that includes the reduced enamel epithelium, epithelial cell rests of Serres, and epithelial cell rests of Malassez. Radiographically, DCs are usually presented as well-defined radiolucencies associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth at the level of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) are classified under the same category as DCs. Radiographically, glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) may appear as unilocular

[Establishment and application of new techniques for submandibular gland preservation].

The saliva secreted from submandibular gland (SMG) accounts for 60%-65%. It plays an important role in maintaining the human function of swallow, digestion, testing, speech, protection of oral mucosa, and prevention from dental carries. The SMG is frequently resected during the treatment for various kinds of oral and maxillofacial diseases, resulting in xerostomia and decreased quality of life. During the past 15 years, Research Center of Salivary Gland Diseases in Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology conducted a series of studies on new techniques for preservation of SMG and a

Case report: Initial atypical skeletal symptoms and dental anomalies as first signs of Gardner syndrome: the importance of genetic analysis in the early diagnosis.

Background: Gardner syndrome is a rare genetic cancer predisposition disorder characterized by intestinal polyposis, multiple osteomas, and soft and hard tissue tumors. Dental anomalies are present in approximately 30%-70% of patients with Gardner syndrome and can be discovered during routine dental examinations. However, sometimes the diagnosis is challenging due to the high clinical variability and incomplete clinical picture. Herein, we report a family with various dental and bone anomalies, in which the definitive diagnosis was established with the help of a comprehensive genetic analysis

Pharmacotherapy in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Review.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a collective term that includes disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and of the masticatory muscles and their associated structures. TMDs are characterized by pain, joint sounds and restricted mandibular movement, and drugs are widely used in the management of that pain. Pharmacological agents commonly used for the treatment of TMDs include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, corticosteroids, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, anticonvulsants and benzodiazepines. In this paper, we discuss these agents and the potential adverse
