The oral cavity as a reservoir of bacterial pathogens for focal infections.

Dental procedures, but more importantly, oral infections and poor oral health can provoke the introduction of oral microorganisms into the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. The subsequent attachment and multiplication of these bacteria on tissues or organs can lead to focal oral infections. Pathogenic agents may also remain at their primary oral site but the toxins liberated can reach an organ or tissue via the bloodstream and cause metastatic injury. Finally, metastatic inflammation may result from an immunological injury caused by oral bacteria or their soluble products that enter the blo

Effect of Dental Caries on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Among Young Adults: A Systematic Review.

Oral health plays a significant role in an individual's well-being. Poor oral health is manifested as tooth loss, dental caries, periodontal diseases, and oral cancer. Early stages are often asymptomatic, but advanced stages of dental caries may lead to pain, infections, abscesses, and even sepsis. Any disease that could interfere with the activities of daily life may have an adverse effect on the general quality of life. The concept of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) brings a new perspective to clinical care and research. It shifts the focus of clinicians and researchers from the

The Laterally Closed Tunnel for the Treatment of Deep Isolated Mandibular Recessions: Surgical Technique and a Report of 24 Cases.

Predictable coverage of deep isolated mandibular gingival recessions is one of the most challenging endeavors in plastic-esthetic periodontal surgery, and limited data is available in the literature. The aim of this paper is to present the rationale, the step-by-step procedure, and the results obtained in a series of 24 patients treated by means of a novel surgical technique (the laterally closed tunnel [LCT]) specifically designed for deep isolated mandibular recessions. A total of 24 healthy patients (21 women and 3 men, mean age 25.75 ± 7.12 years) exhibiting one single deep mandibular Mill

Dialister pneumosintes bacteremia associated with sinusitis and suspected meningitis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Dialister pneumosintes(D. pneumosintes) is a slow-growing, obligate anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus commonly found in the oral cavity, nasopharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and vaginal microbiota. Although typically associated with periodontal disease, D. pneumosintes has rarely been implicated in bloodstream infections and, to date, has not been reported as a causative agent of meningitis. This case report describes D. pneumosintes bacteremia complicated by meningitis, highlighting the diagnostic challenges associated with fastidious anaerobes and the role of advanced microbiologi

Protective immunity to Porphyromonas gingivalis infection in a murine model.

The mouse abscess model has been used extensively to demonstrate protection after challenge with periodontopathic organisms. In the present study, an outer membrane (OM) preparation of P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 was used to immunize BALB/c mice prior to challenge with live P. gingivalis organisms. This OM preparation, particularly at the highest dose level of 100 micrograms/immunization, was able to induce high levels of specific antibody and subsequent protective immunity. Protection in all immunized mice was noted by the rapid healing of the primary lesions, a low incidence of secondary lesion

Protocol for immediate implant replacement of infected teeth.

Extraction and immediate implant placement has become routine procedure due to reduced treatment time and the preservation of anatomical structures. However, in many cases, this technique involves teeth with different degrees of tissue compromise due to underlying infections. Until now, the degree of implant compromise has not been described, nor has a clinical management protocol been established for these cases. The aim of this article is to report the clinical results of a protocol used for immediate implant placement and provisionalization in infected extraction sockets. A classification o

Bone infections involving anaerobic bacteria.

Over 700 cases of anaerobic osteomyelitis have been reported in the literature. Nonetheless, most reviews of osteomyelitis have paid little attention to the potential role of anaerobes in bone infections. There have, as yet, been no prospective studies of osteomyelitis utlizing optimal anaerobic transport and culture techniques. In a retrospective study of osteomyelitis at Wadsworth VA Hospital from 1973--1975, 39 percent of 58 patients with osteomyelitis had an infection involving anaerobes. Anaerobes were isolated from 81 percent of 27 patients whose specimens were cultured anaerobically. An
