Use of selectively colored stereolithography for diagnosis of impacted supernumerary teeth for a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia.

The objective of the present study was to develop a three-dimensional method of locating the position of impacted supernumerary teeth in a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia. Stereolithographies of the patient's teeth and maxillofacial structure were prepared, coloring the teeth red. This model established accurate tooth malposition and provided support for selection of surgical exposure for extraction and traction of the impacted teeth. Selectively colored stereolithography is expected to be useful in a number of diverse situations.

Instability and femoral head vitality in fractures of the femoral neck.

Sixteen patients with femoral neck fractures were studied with roentgen-stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) and low-field magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in addition to plain roentgenography. In six patients, these results were compared with the results of histopathologic analyses. All fractures were stabilized with two cannulated titanium screws. Evaluation of fracture movement before weight bearing (nine fractures) revealed no or only slight movement (less than 3.4 mm or 4.7 degrees). During weight bearing, two undisplaced fractures were compressed about 5 mm and one 20.3 mm, because of del

Micromotion in knee arthroplasty. A roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis of tibial component fixation.

The modern era of endoprosthetic joint replacement started with the introduction of acrylic cement to improve component fixation. Long-term results have, however, indicated that prosthetic fixation remains critical; loosening at the bone-cement interface has become an important problem. Research in recent years has focused on attempts to achieve better fixation by improving cementing techniques, improving prosthetic design by, for example, adding metal support of polyethylene components and by exploring alternative ways to bond prosthetic components to bone without cement. The mechanical integ

Nasolabial shape and aesthetics in patients with cleft lip and palate: analysis of 3D facial images.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In individuals with cleft lip and palate, nasolabial asymmetry and dysmorphology are associated with lower aesthetic ratings, though this relationship remains unclear. This study examines how deviations in nasolabial shape from the average affect aesthetic ratings. MATERIALS/METHODS: 3D stereophotogrammetric images were taken from 53 children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) (34 boys, 19 girls; mean age: 10.5 ± 0.6 years) and 53 age and sex-matched children without cleft. UCLP repair was performed by three experienced surgeons in a single stage at 8.2 ± 2.3 m

Characterizing multisegment foot kinematics during gait in diabetic foot patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions, this condition may result in multiple and chronic invalidating long term complications. Among these, the diabetic foot, is determined by the simultaneous presence of both peripheral neuropathy and vasculopathy that alter the biomechanics of the foot with the formation of callosity and ulcerations. To diagnose and treat the diabetic foot is crucial to understand the foot complex kinematics. Most of gait analysis protocols represent the entire foot as a rigid body connected to the shank. Nevertheless the existing m

Morphologic changes in the perioral soft tissues in patients with mandibular hyperplasia using a laser system for three-dimensional surface measurement.

Soft tissue changes following correction of mandibular hyperplasia were studied using a laser system for three-dimensional (3-D) surface measurement. Twelve subjects (7 men and 5 women; age 17-48 years) were included in this study. Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies were performed in ten patients and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomies in two patients. Pre- and postoperative images, obtained with the laser system, were superimposed to determine distribution of changes in the perioral soft tissue. Mean volume changes were 1032.3 mm3 in the Subnasale-UL area and 8700.9 mm3 in the LL-Men

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis of growth pattern after supination--eversion ankle injuries in children.

In a prospective study of ankle fractures in children, the growth rate was registered with a roentgen stereophotogrammetric method. The injuries were classified traumatologically according to Gerner-Smidt and anatomically according to Salter and Harris. Twenty-six ankle fractures were classified as supination--eversion injuries. Of these, eight had intraarticular injuries, 16 had extraarticular injuries of the distal tibia, and two had a zigzag fracture through the growth plate of the distal fibula. Information about growth was obtained within 3 months after fracture, and the growth pattern wa

Quantifying 3-Dimensional Soft-to-Hard Tissue Response After Class III Orthognathic Surgery: A Hybrid Cone-Beam Computed Tomography-Stereophotogrammetric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of postoperative soft tissue behavior remains a critical challenge in Class III orthognathic surgery. However, existing estimates of soft-to-hard tissue correspondence are largely derived from 2-dimensional analyses or single-modality imaging, limiting their ability to characterize region-specific soft tissue responses after bimaxillary correction. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to quantify region-specific soft tissue responses to skeletal repositioning following bimaxillary surgery via a hybrid cone-beam computed tomography -3-dimensional stereophotogra

Automated 3D Perioral Landmark Detection Using High-Resolution Network: Artificial Intelligence-based Anthropometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional facial stereophotogrammetry, a convenient, noninvasive and highly reliable evaluation tool, has in recent years shown great potential in plastic surgery for preoperative planning and evaluating treatment efficacy. However, it requires manual identification of facial landmarks by trained evaluators to obtain anthropometric data, which takes much time and effort. Automatic 3D facial landmark localization has the potential to facilitate fast data acquisition and eliminate evaluator error. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to describe a novel deep-learning method

Objective Assessment of the Unilateral Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity Using Three-Dimensional Stereophotogrammetry: Severity and Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Optimization of care to correct the unilateral cleft lip nasal deformity is hampered by lack of objective measures to quantify preoperative severity and outcome. The purpose of this study was to develop a consensus standard of nasal appearance using three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry; determine whether anthropometric measurements could be used to quantify severity and outcome; and determine whether preoperative severity predicts postoperative outcome. METHODS: The authors collected facial three-dimensional images of 100 subjects in three groups: 45 infants before cleft lip rep

Comparison of lower limb muscle strength between diabetic neuropathic and healthy subjects using OpenSim.

Diabetes neuropathy and vasculopathy are the two major complications of diabetes mellitus, leading to diabetic foot disease, of which the worst consequences are plantar ulcers and amputations. Motor impairments like joint stiffness and loss of balance are distinctive effects of diabetes and they have been extensively explored. However, while altered muscle function has been also assessed through experimentally measured surface electromyography, little is known about muscle forces. The objective of this study was to estimate muscle forces in subjects with diabetes and to use these data to ident

Standardization proposal of soft tissue artefact description for data sharing in human motion measurements.

Soft tissue artefact (STA) represents one of the main obstacles for obtaining accurate and reliable skeletal kinematics from motion capture. Many studies have addressed this issue, yet there is no consensus on the best available bone pose estimator and the expected errors associated with relevant results. Furthermore, results obtained by different authors are difficult to compare due to the high variability and specificity of the phenomenon and the different metrics used to represent these data. Therefore, the aim of this study was twofold: firstly, to propose standards for description of STA;

Development and reproducibility of a 3D stereophotogrammetric reference frame for facial soft tissue growth of babies and young children with and without orofacial clefts.

The aim of this study was to develop a reference frame for three dimensional (3D) facial soft tissue growth analysis in children and to determine its reproducibility. Two observers twice placed the reference frame on 39 3D-stereophotogrammetry facial images of children with orofacial clefts and control children. The observers' performances were analyzed by calculating mean distance, distance variability, and P95 between the same facial surfaces at two different time points. Correlations between observers were analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient. The influence of presence of a cleft
