Beyond colour perception: auditory-visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations.

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic

Multidimensional assessment of functional outcomes of medialization thyroplasty.

Medialization thyroplasty (MT) is the most widely used laryngeal framework phonosurgical procedure for managing glottic incompetence secondary to unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional outcomes of MT in 32 UVFP patients, comparing multidimensional perceptual and instrumental measures of voice before and after surgery, and to evaluate how close to normal that postoperative voice measure became. Video laryngostroboscopy (VLS), auditory perceptive evaluation of voice, the patients' self-evaluation of hoarseness on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS

Executive functions and cognitive subprocesses in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

In recent years, special interest has been focused on impairments of executive functions in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). However, the majority of studies have not clearly separated deficits in executive functions from impairments in other cognitive processes involved in task solving. In the present study, working memory (WM) functions of 20 patients with OSAS were compared with those of 10 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy subjects. Cognitive functions were measured four times a day; each of these measurements was accompanied by an assessment of subjective and

[Hearing in advanced age: critical view of so-called presbycusis].

Presbycusis cannot be defined nosologically as an uniform disease. The computed threshold curves of the age dependent high-frequency hearing loss should not conceal the fact that the degree and form of the hearing loss vary greatly within the age groups. The pathological appearances also vary; degenerative changes vary in site and extent and are not limited to the cochlear structures, but are also found in all parts of the auditory system. The etiology of presbycusis can scarcely be attributed to the physiological senile degeneration of cochlear or central nervous structures alone because epid

Bupropion-induced tinnitus after dose escalation: a rare and reversible adverse effect - a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bupropion is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor commonly prescribed for major depressive disorder and smoking cessation. It is preferred for its minimal serotonergic activity and favorable side effect profile. However, rare adverse events such as tinnitus - the perception of sound without an external source - have been occasionally reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 45-year-old male treated for depression with bupropion 150 mg/day, who developed bilateral low-pitched humming tinnitus after the dose was increased to 300 mg/day. He had no history of

Gender-Affirming Voice Training Delivered by a Novel Mobile App: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Gender-affirming voice training (GAVT) has reduced gender incongruence for transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals, but remains limited by cost and scarcity of specialized providers. Mobile health (mHealth) is a bridge to these access gaps; yet, few high-quality, clinically informed mHealth apps exist within voice clinical sciences. OBJECTIVE: We previously created a free mobile app (Attuned; Weill Cornell Medicine and Ithaca College) to deliver clinically informed GAVT through structured instructional videos narrated by a speech-language pathologist and a laryngol

Human Frequency Following Responses to Vocoded Speech.

OBJECTIVES: Vocoders offer an effective platform to simulate the effects of cochlear implant speech processing strategies in normal-hearing listeners. Several behavioral studies have examined the effects of varying spectral and temporal cues on vocoded speech perception; however, little is known about the neural indices of vocoded speech perception. Here, the scalp-recorded frequency following response (FFR) was used to study the effects of varying spectral and temporal cues on brainstem neural representation of specific acoustic cues, the temporal envelope periodicity related to fundamental f

Sensory-evoked gamma oscillations in chronic schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The early visual-evoked gamma oscillation (VGO) elicited by Gestalt stimuli is reduced in schizophrenia patients compared with healthy individuals, but it is unknown whether this effect is specific to these particular stimuli and task. In contrast, the early auditory-evoked gamma oscillation (AGO) was reported to be unaffected in a sample of unmedicated, mostly first-episode schizophrenics, but it is unknown whether this oscillation is abnormal in chronic, medicated patients. We investigated these issues by examining the VGO and AGO in chronic schizophrenic (SZ) and matched healthy

Neural mechanisms of auditory discrimination of long-duration tonal patterns: a neural modeling and fMRI study.

Language perception comprises mechanisms of perception and discrimination of auditory stimuli. An important component of auditory perception and discrimination concerns auditory objects. Many interesting auditory objects in our environment are of relatively long duration; however, the temporal window of integration of auditory cortex neurons processing these objects is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to make active use of short-term memory in order to construct and temporarily store long-duration objects. We sought to understand the mechanisms by which the brain manipulates long-duration t

Behavioral Outcomes and Neural Network Modeling of a Novel, Putative, Recategorization Sound Therapy.

The mechanisms underlying sound's effect on tinnitus perception are unclear. Tinnitus activity appears to conflict with perceptual expectations of "real" sound, resulting in it being a salient signal. Attention diverted towards tinnitus during the later stages of object processing potentially disrupts high-order auditory streaming, and its uncertain nature results in negative psychological responses. This study investigated the benefits and neurophysiological basis of passive perceptual training and informational counseling to recategorize phantom perception as a more real auditory object. Spe

Auditory outcomes in tumor vs. nontumor patients fitted with auditory brainstem implants.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) are currently indicated for patients older than 12 years with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) who had bilateral schwannoma removed. Over the last 10 years, we have extended the indications for ABIs to nontumor children and adult patients with cochlear or cochlear nerve injuries or malfunctions who would not benefit from a cochlear implant. We have provided ABIs for patients with cochlear nerve aplasia and other injuries, and patients in whom any benefit was, or would be, severely compromised as in extensive cochlear ossification. In the present chapter we repo

Intelligibility of Emotional Speech in Chinese Older Adults: Effects of Age-Related Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The intelligibility of speech with emotional prosody may decline with aging and hearing loss. In Mandarin Chinese, both lexical tone and emotional prosody rely on pitch variations, raising the possibility that emotional prosody modulates speech intelligibility. This study examined the effects of aging and age-related hearing loss on word recognition for Mandarin words spoken with different emotional prosodies. METHOD: Four groups participated: older adults with normal hearing (ONH; n = 35, 60-86 years of age), older adults with mild-moderate hearing loss (OHL; n = 22, 61-83 years of

Auditory filter nonlinearity in mild/moderate hearing impairment.

Sensorineural hearing loss has frequently been shown to result in a loss of frequency selectivity. Less is known about its effects on the level dependence of selectivity that is so prominent a feature of normal hearing. The aim of the present study is to characterize such changes in nonlinearity as manifested in the auditory filter shapes of listeners with mild/moderate hearing impairment. Notched-noise masked thresholds at 2 kHz were measured over a range of stimulus levels in hearing-impaired listeners with losses of 20-50 dB. Growth-of-masking functions for different notch widths are more p

Tinnitus in Normal-Hearing Individuals: Is Outer Hair Cell Dysfunction the Mechanism?

Background/Objectives: Cochlear "injury" is thought to be a significant cause of tinnitus in patients with hearing loss. Interestingly, individuals with normal hearing may also experience tinnitus. This study evaluates otoacoustic distortion product emissions (DPOAEs) in individuals with normal hearing who experience tinnitus perception. Methods: In this prospective study, the tinnitus group (TG) consisted of 34 subjects with tinnitus (four unilaterally) and normal hearing (threshold ≤ 25 dBHL at 0.25-8 kHz). The control group (CG) comprised 10 healthy volunteers (20 ears) without tinnitus and

Attention-Modulated Cortical Responses as a Biomarker for Tinnitus.

Attention plays an important role in not only the awareness and perception of tinnitus but also its interactions with external sounds. Recent evidence suggests that attention is heightened in the tinnitus brain, likely as a result of relatively local cortical changes specific to deafferentation sites or global changes that help maintain normal cognitive capabilities in individuals with hearing loss. However, most electrophysiological studies have used passive listening paradigms to probe the tinnitus brain and produced mixed results in terms of finding a distinctive biomarker for tinnitus. Her

Musical Intervals in Infants' Spontaneous Crying over the First 4 Months of Life.

INTRODUCTION: Perception and memorizing of melody and rhythm start about the third trimester of gestation. Infants have astonishing musical predispositions, and melody contour is most salient for them. OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally analyse melody contour of spontaneous crying of healthy infants and to identify melodic intervals. The aim was 3-fold: (1) to answer the question whether spontaneous crying of healthy infants regularly exhibits melodic intervals across the observation period, (2) to investigate whether interval events become more complex with age and (3) to analyse interval size dis

Revisiting the Neural Basis of Acquired Amusia: Lesion Patterns and Structural Changes Underlying Amusia Recovery.

Although, acquired amusia is a common deficit following stroke, relatively little is still known about its precise neural basis, let alone to its recovery. Recently, we performed a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) and morphometry (VBM) study which revealed a right lateralized lesion pattern, and longitudinal gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter volume (WMV) changes that were specifically associated with acquired amusia after stroke. In the present study, using a larger sample of stroke patients (N = 90), we aimed to replicate and extend the previous structural findings as well as

The Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Trial (TRTT): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Subjective tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding external sound for which there is no known medical etiology. For a minority of individuals with tinnitus, the condition impacts their ability to lead a normal lifestyle and is severely debilitating. There is no known cure for tinnitus, so current therapy focuses on reducing the effect of tinnitus on the patient's quality of life. Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) uses nonpsychiatric tinnitus-specific educational counseling and sound therapy in a habituation-based protocol to reduce the patient's tinnit
