Sound Localization Strategies in Three Predators.

In this paper, we compare some of the neural strategies for sound localization and encoding interaural time differences (ITDs) in three predatory species of Reptilia, alligators, barn owls and geckos. Birds and crocodilians are sister groups among the extant archosaurs, while geckos are lepidosaurs. Despite the similar organization of their auditory systems, archosaurs and lizards use different strategies for encoding the ITDs that underlie localization of sound in azimuth. Barn owls encode ITD information using a place map, which is composed of neurons serving as labeled lines tuned for prefe

Spatial perception and adaptive sonar behavior.

Bat echolocation is a dynamic behavior that allows for real-time adaptations in the timing and spectro-temporal design of sonar signals in response to a particular task and environment. To enable detailed, quantitative analyses of adaptive sonar behavior, echolocation call design was investigated in big brown bats, trained to rest on a stationary platform and track a tethered mealworm that approached from a starting distance of about 170 cm in the presence of a stationary sonar distracter. The distracter was presented at different angular offsets and distances from the bat. The results of this

Co-option of the hormone-signalling module dafachronic acid-DAF-12 in nematode evolution.

Morphological novelties are lineage-specific traits that serve new functions. Developmental polyphenisms have been proposed to be facilitators of phenotypic evolution, but little is known about the interplay between the associated genetic and environmental factors. Here, we study two alternative morphologies in the mouth of the nematode Pristionchus pacificus and the formation of teeth-like structures that are associated with bacteriovorous feeding and predatory behaviour on fungi and other worms. These teeth-like denticles represent an evolutionary novelty, which is restricted to some members

Relationship between sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) click structure and size derived from videocamera images of a depredating whale (sperm whale prey acquisition).

Sperm whales have learned to depredate black cod (Anoplopoma fimbria) from longline deployments in the Gulf of Alaska. On May 31, 2006, simultaneous acoustic and visual recordings were made of a depredation attempt by a sperm whale at 108 m depth. Because the whale was oriented perpendicularly to the camera as it contacted the longline at a known distance from the camera, the distance from the nose to the hinge of the jaw could be estimated. Allometric relationships obtained from whaling data and skeleton measurements could then be used to estimate both the spermaceti organ length and total le

Optimal Xylocoris flavipes (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) density and time of introduction for suppression of bruchid progeny in stored legumes.

The influences of both predator density and elapsed time between initial infestation and introduction of predators were determined for suppression of bruchids infesting stored grain legumes by Xylocoris flavipes (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae). Predator density treatments consisted of zero, one, two, three, or five male:female pairs of adult X. flavipes added to experimental arenas 0, 24, or 120 h after bruchid introduction. Suppression of Acanthoscelides obtectus approached eradication with all predator treatments. For all other bruchid species evaluated (Callosobruchus analis, C. chinensi

Screening for Indian isolates of egg-parasitic fungi for use in biological control of fascioliasis and amphistomiasis in ruminant livestock.

Wild isolates of the egg-parasitic fungi Paecilomyces lilacinus and Verticillium chlamydosporium, obtained from the organic environment of Durg, Chhattisgarh, India, were subjected to screening for in vitro growth using different media types, range of incubation temperature and pH, and their predatory activity to the eggs of Fasciola gigantica and Gigantocotyle explanatum. Maximum growth of P. lilacinus was obtained in corn-meal agar compared to any other media types. The preferred medium for growth of V. chlamydosporium was corn-meal agar, followed by potato-dextrose agar. After initial growt

Anxiety levels and wild running susceptibility in rats: assessment with elevated plus maze test and predator odor exposure.

It is reported in the literature that nearly 20% of rats are susceptible to displays of wild running (WR) behavior when submitted to high intensity acoustic stimulation. Some characteristics of WR suggest that it can be viewed as a panic-like reaction. This work aimed to test whether WR-sensitive rats show higher levels of anxiety in elevated-plus-maze (EPM) and predator-odor exposure paradigms in comparison with WR-resistant ones. Male adult Wistar rats were submitted to two trials of acoustic stimulation (104 dB, 60 s) in order to assess WR susceptibility. Seven WR-sensitive and 15 WR-resist

An unusual marine crocodyliform from the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary of Patagonia.

Remains of the marine crocodyliform Dakosaurus andiniensis from western South America reveal a lineage that drastically deviated from the skull morphology that characterizes marine crocodyliforms. The snout and lower jaw are extremely robust, short, and high and only bear a few large teeth with serrated edges (resembling those of some terrestrial carnivorous archosaurs). This unusual morphology contrasts with the long and gracile snout and lower jaws bearing numerous teeth, which are present in the closest relatives of D. andiniensis (and interpreted as indicating feeding on small fish or moll

Immediate avoidance behavior and short-term toxic effects of the antidepressants citalopram and sertraline in zebrafish: Habitat selection, behavioral and biochemical disruptions.

Antidepressants are among the most widely prescribed pharmaceuticals worldwide, and compounds such as sertraline and citalopram have been detected in surface waters, raising concerns about their impacts on non-target aquatic organisms. The current study aimed to (i) evaluate immediate behavioral responses to citalopram and sertraline using habitat selection (avoidance and colonization) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) under non-forced exposure, and (ii) integrate these responses with short-term biochemical and behavioral alterations after forced exposure. Concentrations tested were 0.05, 0.2, 1, and

The neurobiology and behavior of the American water shrew (Sorex palustris).

American water shrews (Sorex palustris) are aggressive predators that dive into streams and ponds to find prey at night. They do not use eyesight for capturing fish or for discriminating shapes. Instead they make use of vibrissae to detect and attack water movements generated by active prey and to detect the form of stationary prey. Tactile investigations are supplemented with underwater sniffing. This remarkable behavior consists of exhalation of air bubbles that spread onto objects and are then re-inhaled. Recordings for ultrasound both above and below water provide no evidence for echolocat

Octopamine and serotonin have opposite effects on antipredator behavior in the orb-weaving spider, Larinioides cornutus.

In this study, we experimentally elevated levels of octopamine and serotonin in an orb-weaving spider, and observed the effects on the antipredator behavior thanatosis (death feigning), activity level, and running speed. We found that octopamine significantly shortened the duration of thanatosis, and its effect wore off over 24 h. We also found that serotonin significantly lengthened thanatosis, but in this case, the effect persisted for over 24 h. Neither octopamine nor serotonin affected the general activity or running speed of the spiders. To our knowledge, this is the first study to direct

Examining the Effectiveness of Automated Acoustic Recording Units for Recording Predator-Related Disturbances in Colony Nesting Birds: A Case Study.

As habitat destruction and human expansion pushes wildlife to ever shrinking habitats, new methods are needed to monitor and assess the impacts of disturbances on ecosystems. Automated recording units (ARUs) may provide a cost effective and minimally invasive way of monitoring disturbances and behavioral responses under these changing conditions. ARUs are gaining prominence in avian research, replacing in-person observers in various surveys and in tracking the movement of individual birds. Researchers have investigated the reliability of ARUs in these studies, but investigations into their rel

Predominant effects of host plant species on Aphis gossypii aphid and E. pisyrphus balteatus hoverfly in a tritrophic approach.

The aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) is known as worldwide important pest. It causes serious injuries to crops, but is also able to feed on various cultivated and wild plants. Some programs are developped to control this aphid. In many studies, hoverfy Episyrphus balteatus De Geer (Diptera: Syrphidae) is used as an efficient and aphid specific predator in biological control systems. In this work, we study cotton aphid choice plant discrimination, the effect of host plants on its developpment (fecondity and mortality), and the E. balteatus foraging and oviposition behavior acc

Analyses of the mitochondrial genomes of three Eviphididae mites reveal the phylogenetic position of Eviphididae within Gamasina.

Eviphididae is a family of widely distributed predatory soil mites, notable for the complex phoretic relationships observed between some groups and dung beetles. However, despite their clear ecological and behavioral importance, Eviphididae have received minimal molecular attention, leaving their evolutionary history poorly understood. Here, we present the first study to characterize the mitochondrial genomes of Eviphididae. We assembled and annotated the mitochondrial genomes of Alliphis longicornis, Copriphis huainanensis, and Copriphis falcinellus, and subsequently characterized their genom

Ultrastructural and histochemical properties of the olfactory system in the japanese jungle crow, Corvus macrorhynchos.

Although it has been commonly believed that birds are more dependent on the vision and audition than the olfaction, recent studies indicate that the olfaction of birds is related to the reproductive, homing, and predatory behaviors. In an attempt to reveal the dependence on the olfactory system in crows, we examined the olfactory system of the Japanese jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) by histological, ultrastructural, and lectin histochemical methods. The olfactory epithelium (OE) of the crow occupied remarkably a small area of the nasal cavity (NC) and had the histological and ultrastructur

Commentary: Diagnostic Challenges in Evaluating Adolescents.

Three cases presented in this issue highlight diagnostic challenges in evaluating adolescents, in particular those with a constellation of symptoms that includes hallucinations. These cases raise the question of the accuracy of patient reports and the importance of further exploring symptoms before rushing to a diagnosis or treatment. The first case involved an 18-year-old female patient with Cotard syndrome. She had the syndrome's typical delusions and hallucinations, but her case was unusual because this syndrome is more common in adults and usually involves prominent mood symptoms. The seco

Gene editing to enhance pesticide resistance in a beneficial predatory mite.

Successful integrated pest management (IPM) often depends on a suite of control strategies that are compatible with one another. The predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a key biological control agent of spider mites (especially Tetranychus spp.) and other diminutive, yet important arthropod pests of agriculture. However, like many natural enemies, N. californicus is highly sensitive to chemical pesticides, limiting its overall effectiveness in the field. Here, we used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and Receptor-Mediated Ovary Transduction of Cargo (ReMOT Control) to creat

Niemann-Pick type C2 protein PpseNPC2-1 binding volatile nerolidol mediates prey localization of the pond wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata.

As a key natural enemy of common agricultural pests, the pond wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata preys on planthoppers, leafhoppers and other pests. Chemoreception is essential for P. pseudoannulata in locating prey and searching for mates. Although our previous work identified Niemann-Pick type C2 (NPC2) proteins as olfactory-related in P. pseudoannulata, the molecular mechanisms underlying prey detection remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the P. pseudoannulata spiders showed a significant preference for rice plants infested with Nilaparvata lugens (brown planthoppers). Nerolidol, a m

Pig-hunting dogs are an at-risk population for canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in eastern Australia.

BACKGROUND: Canine heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, has global veterinary importance. In Australia, the prevalence of canine heartworm infection decreased markedly following the introduction of over-the-counter macrocyclic lactones. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of canine heartworm infection in at-risk populations of dogs in eastern Australia and analyse published prevalence data from Australia. METHODS: In total, 566 dogs from eastern Australia were tested for the presence of D. immitis antigen. Four cohorts were studied: pig-hunting dogs from Queensland (Cohort 1, n =

The behavior of Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and of their predator Cycloneda sanguinea (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in cotton-cowpea intercropping systems.

The intercropping is an important cultural practice commonly used in pest management. It is based on the principle that increased plant diversity in the agro-ecosystem can lead to reductions of pest populations in the crop. The current study aimed to assess the impact the colored fiber cotton-cowpea intercropped systems on Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora and on their predator Cycloneda sanguinea and the losses and the dispersion behavior of these aphids and their predator in these cropping systems. The experiment had a randomized block experimental design with two bioassays and four treatm
