Protective effect of topically applied fluoride in relation to fluoride sensitivity of mutans streptococci.

The aim of the present in vitro experiments was to determine whether the protection of enamel by topically applied fluoride against demineralization by bacterial acids would depend on the fluoride sensitivity of the bacteria. Glucose-agarose gel suspensions of fluoride-sensitive and fluoride-resistant mutans streptococci were placed on bovine enamel specimens with different amounts of fluoride. One group of specimens was untreated, a second group had been pretreated with a F-lacquer, and a third group had been pretreated with the F-lacquer and rinsed subsequently with a KOH-solution, to remove

Acid-Resistant Glass Ionomer Cements: An Assessment of Their Mechanical Properties, Fluoride Ion Release and Protection to Surrounding Tooth Surfaces From Acid Challenges.

New acid-resistant glass ionomer cements (GIC) claim to be able to withstand acidic conditions while also protecting surrounding tooth structures and preserving function. Currently, there are only a few studies that assessed mechanical properties, ion release, and changes that occur around an acid-resistant GIC-dentine bonded interface under acidic conditions. This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties and fluoride release of GIC and the dentine hardness changes of the tooth that occur near the GIC-dentine bonded interface under in vitro conditions simulating carious and erosive

Dentists' practice patterns of treatment for deep occlusal caries: Findings from a dental practice-based research network.

OBJECTIVES: This study quantified and compared practice patterns of treatment for deep occlusal carious lesions among Japanese dentists, and tested the hypothesis that dentist characteristics are significantly associated with the decision to choose an indirect pulp capping (IPC), a form of selective carious tissue removal that involves leaving a thin layer of demineralized tissue over the pulp, that is then covered with a protective liner. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire survey of dentists affiliated with the Dental Practice-based Research Network Japan

Effect of sealant viscosity on the penetration of resin into etched human enamel.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the etched depth, penetration of sealants and marginal seal. Sixty unerupted lower first premolars extracted from patients for orthodontic reasons were thoroughly cleaned and stored in an antiseptic Ringer's solution at 4 degrees C. A "window" on the occlusal of 15 of the premolars, including both mesial and distal pits, was developed by painting nail varnish around the border of the occlusal surfaces. Etching was then done with 35% phosphoric acid for 60 seconds to all 60 premolars. Five of the "window" teeth were evaluated by mi

Regeneration of the pulp-dentin complex in mature teeth using autologous demineralized dentin matrix and dental pulp stem cells: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Regenerating the true pulp-dentin complex in mature teeth with necrotic pulps or apical lesions remains challenging, and consistent clinical evidence of dentin bridge formation is limited. This report describes two adult cases treated with regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) using autologous dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and demineralized dentin matrix (DDM). CASE PRESENTATION: In Case 1, a 33-year-old woman developed pulp necrosis with apical periodontitis in a maxillary left central incisor following traumatic subluxation. After canal disinfection, autologous DPSCs isolated f

Exploring the Multifunctional Potential of Bioactive Glass-Ionomer Cements.

Conventional bioactive glasses enhance mineralization in glass-ionomer cements (GICs), but their high sodium content adversely affects mechanical performance, limiting clinical utility. To address the limitations of bioactive glass, this study explores a novel sodium-free, fluoride- and magnesium-enriched bioactive glass (J-BAG) in GICs. The mechanical performance, ion release, antibacterial efficacy against multispecies cariogenic biofilms, and mineralization capacity were investigated. The J-BAG (38.3SiO2-6P2O5-43.9CaO-6.8CaF2-5MgO) and two experimental ionomer glasses were synthesized using

Immediate implantation in fresh extraction sockets. A controlled clinical and histological study in man.

BACKGROUND: Early implantation may preserve the alveolar anatomy, and the placement of a fixture in a fresh extraction socket helps to maintain the bony crest. Although a number of clinical studies exist, no histological reports show the outcome of implantation in fresh extraction sockets without the use of membranes in humans compared to implants placed in mature bone. METHODS: Forty-eight healthy patients, receiving at least 4 fixtures in each of 2 symmetrical quadrants, underwent placement of 1 experimental fixture placed in a fresh extraction socket (TI) and 1 contralateral fixture in mat

Fluoride released from orthodontic bonding agents alters the enamel surface and inhibits enamel demineralization in vitro.

In this study, we examined two fluoride-releasing orthodontic agents in respect to fluoride release, enamel demineralization inhibition, as well as alterations observed on the enamel surface after their use. Fluoride release was found to occur in the highest concentrations within the first 24 hours for both materials examined. After this period, a dramatic decline in fluoride release was observed in both adhesives, and after 90 days no fluoride was detectable. Both fluoride-releasing materials showed significant differences on enamel demineralization around the brackets when compared with a co

Periodontal Defects in the A116T Knock-in Murine Model of Odontohypophosphatasia.

Mutations in ALPL result in hypophosphatasia (HPP), a disease causing defective skeletal mineralization. ALPL encodes tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALP), an enzyme that promotes mineralization by reducing inorganic pyrophosphate, a mineralization inhibitor. In addition to skeletal defects, HPP causes dental defects, and a mild clinical form of HPP, odontohypophosphatasia, features only a dental phenotype. The Alpl knockout (Alpl (-/-)) mouse phenocopies severe infantile HPP, including profound skeletal and dental defects. However, the severity of disease in Alpl (-/-) mice prevents

Radiopaque Tagging Masks Caries Lesions following Incomplete Excavation in vitro.

One-step incomplete excavation seals caries-affected dentin under a restoration and appears to be advantageous in the treatment of deep lesions. However, it is impossible to discriminate radiographically between intentionally left, arrested lesions and overlooked or active lesions. This diagnostic uncertainty decreases the acceptance of minimally invasive excavation and might lead to unnecessary re-treatment of incompletely excavated teeth. Radiopaque tagging of sealed lesions might mask arrested lesions and assist in discrimination from progressing lesions. Therefore, we microradiographically
