Relationship between sleep bruxism and masticatory performance in healthy adults: A cross-sectional study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Bruxism may have positive clinical consequences, but whether it contributes to masticatory function remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to clarify the relationship between sleep bruxism and masticatory performance in young adults with healthy dentitions and to determine the roles of occlusal force, dental occlusion, temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and jaw symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety-seven dental students with healthy dentitions participated in this cross-sectional study (median age, 21.9 years; 84 women). Sleep bruxism was ass

Systemic Approach to Prevent Inadvertent Perfusion in Eyes with Extensive Choroidal Detachment, Suprachoroidal Fluid, and Hypotony During Pars Plana Vitrectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with extensive choroidal detachment (CD), suprachoroidal fluid (SCF), and lower intraocular pressure (IOP) markedly increase the difficulty of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) because it makes the insertion and placement of the trocar cannulas for PPV time-consuming and technically challenging. In this study, we developed a systemic approach that avoids the risks of sclerotomy or using a longer trocar to help in the safe placement of the trocar cannulas in order to prevent inadvertent fluid/air perfusion during PPV in RRD eyes with extensive CD,

Binocular function in school children with reading difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: Prior findings suggest that poor readers tend to have poor binocular vision skills, but data on the binocular abilities of children with poor reading skills are lacking. Our aim was to characterize distance and near horizontal heterophoria, distance and near horizontal fusional vergence ranges, accommodative convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio, near point of convergence, and stereopsis in poor-reading school-age children without dyslexia selected from a non-clinical population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 87 poor readers and 32 control children (all 8-13

John G. Lindberg and the discovery of exfoliation syndrome.

John G. Lindberg, a young Finnish ophthalmology resident, started a research project in 1914 aiming at an academic dissertation. His plan was to elucidate Axenfeld's observations on iris changes in senile eyes. Axenfeld had described two types of degeneration of the iris: a hyaline degeneration of the iris pupillary zone causing poor pupillary dilatation with mydriatics and an atrophy of the iris pigment epithelium at the pupillary border. For his research Lindberg had to construct a slit-lamp biomicroscope by studying Gullstrand's monograph on the matter; slit-lamp biomicroscopes were not com

The vascular pattern of the human dorsal root ganglion and its probable bearing on a compartment syndrome.

STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive anatomic investigation of the vasculature of the dorsal root ganglions. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the blood supply of the various spinal ganglions is sufficiently consistent to derive a "generic" description and illustration that would be applicable to all spinal levels, and to ascertain whether this vascular pattern is inherently predisposed to the development of a closed compartment syndrome. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The few previous descriptions of spinal ganglionic vasculature do not include photographic evidence showing uniformity in the arterial di

Adenoma of the ciliary body pigment epithelium: the 1998 Albert Ruedemann, Sr, memorial lecture, Part 1.

BACKGROUND: Adenoma of the pigment epithelium of the ciliary body (CPE) is a rare neoplasm. Most reported cases have been misdiagnosed as ciliary body melanoma. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate clinical features, management, pathological features, and prognosis of adenoma of the CPE and to determine clinical features that may differentiate it from ciliary body melanoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of medical charts, photographs, and pathological features of patients with adenoma of the CPE who were treated by the authors. RESULTS: Of the 8 patients with adenoma of the

Tricuspid atresia. An anatomical study of 17 cases.

This is a report on the anatomical characteristics of 17 cases of tricuspid atresia. Three of these cases had a discrepancy between the type of bulboventricular loop (dextro) and the position of the great arteries (the aorta being to the left of the pulmonary artery). In these a characteristic type of ventricular septal defect, located just beneath the tissue of the semilunar valves was found. In 3 cases with cardiac dextroversion and juxtaposition of the atrial appendages the great arteries were on the same frontal plane and there was a separation between the semilunar and the anterior mitral

The usefulness of a trans-illuminated introducer during the Nuss procedure.

Background There has been an increase in the number of patients undergoing the Nuss procedure for cosmetic purposes, thus increasing the need for safer surgery. However, there are reports of massive hemorrhage and organ damage during the Nuss procedure which involves dissection of the anterior mediastinum. We have developed the trans-illuminated introducer that allows safe surgery while maintaining a small surgical incision of less than 1 cm. Methods This study was a retrospective review of 306 patients aged 3-40 years who underwent the Nuss procedure using the trans-illuminated introducer at

Arthroscopic Synovectomy for Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor/Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis in the Posterior Knee Using the Posterior Trans-Septal Portal Technique.

UNLABELLED: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (T-GCT) and pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) are interchangeable terms for an uncommon benign proliferation of synovial tissue1-6. Although neoplastic and inflammatory origins have been hypothesized, the etiology of this condition is unknown. There is controversy regarding surgical treatment, as the open and arthroscopic approaches to synovectomy have shown comparable reported outcomes in the literature5-7. However, direct comparison of these 2 operative methods is problematic because of selective bias in the existing literature and the lack of

Emerging trends in the early diagnosis of dental caries: a scoping review of artificial intelligence, digital diagnostics, and teledentistry.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic, noncommunicable condition affecting individuals of all ages and socio-economic status. The recent technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), digital diagnostics, and teledentistry have been genuinely promising in revolutionizing the future of early caries detection and preventive care. However, an integrated understanding of these advancements and their clinical readiness remains limited. AIM: To systematically map and synthesize the current evidence on the use of AI, digital diagnostic technologies, and teledentistry f

Animove: a low-cost, easy-to-use, fast and high-resolution system to evaluate swimming performance in zebrafish.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Imaging devices are increasingly present in daily life and are becoming widely used in the record of animal experiments. It is easy to register movement and change in position with video, which is the basis of several methodologies. Yet most of this data is either only qualitatively analysed or their quantitative analysis is based on expensive, proprietary systems, depending on specialized devices and closed software. Here, we present a novel, low-cost system for quantifying swimming performance in both adult and larval zebrafish (Danio rerio), using smartphones for

Two-Year Clinical Outcomes after Arthroscopic Re-Excision of Recurrent Dorsal Wrist Ganglion Cyst.

OBJECTIVES: Arthroscopic excision of dorsal wrist ganglion (DWG) cysts has recently become an alternative to open surgery, with the advantage of lower recurrence. However, in recurrent cases, whether re-excision using an arthroscopic approach would achieve favorable outcomes has not been determined. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of function evaluation and recurrence rate after arthroscopic excision of recurrent DWG cysts. METHODS: A total of 11 consecutive patients with clinically diagnosed recurrent DWG cysts were retrospectively reviewed between November 2017 and March

Laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through for high imperforate anus--a new technique.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This report describes a new technique of laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through (LAARP) for repair of high imperforate anus. The procedure utilizes minimal perineal dissection, preservation of the distal rectum, and accurate placement of the rectum within the levator ani and external anal sphincter muscle complex. METHODS: Sharp dissection and cautery was used laparoscopically to expose the rectal pouch down to the urethral or vaginal fistula, which was clipped distally and divided. The pelvic floor musculature was then assessed and the levator sling identified.

Plerocercoids of Adenocephalus pacificus in Argentine hakes: Broad distribution, low zoonotic risk.

Adenocephalus pacificus is a tapeworm parasitic of marine mammals and the main agent of human diphylobothriosis caused by consumption of raw or undercooked marine fishes, being considered as a reemerging disease. Despite having a broad distribution in marine mammals in both hemispheres, plerocercoid larvae in fish have only been reported in the Pacific Ocean, in Peruvian waters, from where most human cases are known. In Argentine waters larval stages of Diphyllobothriidae have been recorded in Merluccius hubbsi, a main fish resource mostly exported frozen, headed and gutted (H&G) or as fillets

Long-Term Gastrocolocutaneous Fistula after Endoscopic Gastrostomy: How Concerned Should We Be?

UNLABELLED: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a safe technique for long-term enteral feeding. The most common PEG-associated adverse events are minor. Gastrocolocutaneous fistula (GCCF) results from misplacement of the PEG tube through the colon. The importance of this complication is not currently defined, and there is no clearly established therapeutic algorithm. The authors report a series of 3 cases of GCCF diagnosed and treated in a tertiary center. CASE 1: An 88-year-old man underwent PEG due to head and neck cancer. The procedure was uneventful, and the patient remained asym
