A plasmonic Ag/AgBr nanohybrid has been synthesized by in situ thermal reduction of AgBr nanoparticles in polyols. This directly converted Ag/AgBr shows significant absorption over the full visible spectrum. The enhanced light absorption in the spectral region of 450 nm to 800 nm was due to the plasmonic nanosized Ag grown on the surface of AgBr nanoparticles with mixed morphologies and increased sizes. Nanoparticles of Cr(2)O(3) are prepared through hydrothermal synthesis process using CrO(3)/PVA in aqueous solution using sucrose as a reducing agent. We describe a simple terahertz (THz) time domain spectrometer with a bandwidth extending up to 7.5 THz. We show that by keeping the generation and detection crystals close to each other a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved without using lock-in detection and dry nitrogen flushing. A pool of free aminoacids of the blood serum has been studied in growing rats with a decreased retinol content in the liver tissue (to 5 g/g). Caecal and colonic uptake of both linoleic acid and cholesterol were studied in rats after distal small bowel resection (DSBR). The results showed that the surgical operation increased the caecal and colonic uptake of linoleic acid. Supplementation with linolenic acid inhibited caecal and colonic uptake of linoleic acid. Patients with Crohn's colitis were investigated regarding the relationship between intestinal inflammation, mucosal activity of phospholipase A2 and intestinal permeability to different-sized polyethylene glycols (PEG). Calves were fed a corn-skim milk or a purified diet to determine if the large differences in manganese metabolism in rats fed such diets also occurred in ruminating calves. Using the indirect fluorescent antibody test and sera from 10 proved cases of invasive amoebiasis, the effects of absorption of IgG on observed titres of amoeba-specific IgM and IgA were investigated. In addition, results of cellulose acetate precipitin tests were compared with anti-amoebic antibody levels. Antiamoebic IgM was found at titres of 1:14 to 1:112 after IgG absorption in four cases.
