[Endothelial cell transplantation and growth behavior of the human corneal endothelium].

BACKGROUND: The human corneal endothelium has a limited proliferative capacity in vivo. Until now it has only been possible to replace damaged endothelium by transplantation of a donor cornea. After establishing methods for the isolation and in vitro cultivation of human corneal endothelial cells, transplantation of these cells my be an alternative therapeutic option. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review methods for the in vitro cultivation of human corneal endothelial cells and their transplantation on the Descemet membrane of donor corneas are described. RESULTS: In vitro proliferation of

Chronic early leucine administration induces behavioral deficits in rats.

Sustained levels of leucine comparable to those of human Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) were achieved in blood and brain of rats by subcutaneous leucine administration twice a day from the 6th to the 28th day of life. Control rats were treated with saline in the same volumes. Behavioral studies using aversive and nonaversive tasks were performed during adult age. Chronic early leucine treatment impaired acquisition of a two-way shuttle avoidance task and altered habituation to an open field. Our results suggest that early postnatal leucine administration induces long-lasting behavioral defic

Empirically supported psychological and behavioral therapies in pediatric rehabilitation of TBI.

This article examines the empirical support for psychological therapies for children with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Empirical support for psychological treatments of noninjured children provides a foundation upon and a framework in which to discuss applications to children with neurobehavioral dysfunction. Behavioral interventions to address externalizing behaviors have received the greatest focus, whereas there is a paucity of work that pertains to internalizing features and prosocial behavior such as assertiveness. Although the systematic study of psychological intervention lags far behi

Surveillance behavior of women with a reported family history of colorectal cancer.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The present study tested whether the surveillance behavior of women with a family history of colorectal cancer (CRC) differed from that of women without such a history. DESIGN: The study included 72,710 subjects from the population of E3N, a cohort study, part of the European Prospective Investigation on Cancer, investigating risk factors for cancer among women. RESULTS: Fecal occult-blood testing (FOBT) was reported by 19.4% of the women with no CRC in their family and by 21.8% of those with one or more CRC (frequency odds ratio (FOR) = 1.01; ns). The degree of kinship did

Preterm infant behavioral and heart rate responses to antenatal phenobarbital.

The effects of antenatal phenobarbital on behavioral state and heart rate (HR) were examined in a randomized sample of 49 preterm infants > 24 and < 34 weeks postconceptional age. Behavioral state and HR observations were made during a routine care giving procedure on Days 1, 2, and 3 of life. There were no differences in behavioral state and HR responses between control and experimental subjects, suggesting that antenatal phenobarbital did not have a sedative effect on experimental subjects. Infants in both study groups responded to caregiving with changes to fussy/cry behavior and increases

On the relation between object manipulation and stereotypic self-injurious behavior.

Results from a number of studies have shown an inverse relationship between stereotypic behavior and object manipulation. The purposes of this study were to determine whether techniques similar to those used previously (prompting and reinforcement) would be effective in increasing object manipulation under both prompted and unprompted conditions, and to ascertain whether increases in object manipulation would result in decreases in stereotypic self-injurious behavior (SIB). Two individuals with developmental disabilities who engaged in SIB maintained by automatic reinforcement participated. Re

Perinatal fenvalerate exposure: behavioral and endocrinology changes in male rats.

The effects of maternal exposure to fenvalerate during the prenatal and postnatal periods of sexual brain differentiation were studied in adult male offspring. Behavioral (open field, stereotyped, and sexual behaviors), physical (sexual maturation, body and organ weights), endocrine (testosterone levels), and neurochemical (striatal and hypothalamic monoamine and respective metabolite levels) data were assessed. The results showed that there was no change in the age of testis descent or testis weight, nor were there changes in monoamine levels or stereotyped behavior. However, there were signi

Corneal kindling in mice: behavioral and pharmacological differences to conventional kindling.

Electrical kindling via unilateral implanted depth electrodes in rats is currently the most commonly used model for temporal lobe epilepsy, but the use of this model in drug screening for the identification of novel anticonvulsants is markedly hampered by the laborious and time-consuming preparation and the size of the animals. Kindling of male mice via transcorneal electrical stimulation has recently proposed as a cost-effective screening model that may improve the preclinical evaluation of efficacy and adverse effect potential of drug candidates for treatment of partial epilepsy. The influence of corticosterone on serotonergic stereotypy and sexual behavior in the female rat.

The effects of adrenalectomy and chronic corticosterone treatment on sexual behavior in the ovariectomized female rat were investigated. The serotonergic type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor-mediated behavior 'wet dog shakes' (WDS) was measured concurrently. In Experiment 1, adrenalectomy reduced the frequency of WDS following the administration of the 5-HT(2A/2C) receptor agonist 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI) but had no effect on spontaneous WDS. In Experiment 2, chronic corticosterone treatment increased DOI-induced WDS in both adrenalectomized and sham-adrenalectomized rats. In E

[A 40-year-old woman with progressive dementia and abnormal behavior].

We report a 40-year-old Japanese woman who died after 12 years history of progressive dementia and abnormal behaviors. She was well until 1985 at her age of 28 years old, when she had an onset of behavioral change in which she drank much, neglected house-keeping works, and her life style became sloppy. At age 30, she became unable to understand written sentences, and paced up- and down in and out of her house. She was admitted to other hospital where marked dementia with disorientation and memory loss were noted. Slight increase in CSF protein and decrease in the peripheral nerve conduction ve

The modification of breathing behavior. Pavlovian and operant control in emotion and cognition.

The purpose of this article is to bring attention to breathing as a behavior that can be modified by means of Pavlovian and operant principles of control. With this aim in mind, this paper (a) reviews a selection of early and recent conditioning studies (Pavlovian and operant paradigms) in respiratory psychophysiology, (b) discusses the bidirectional relationship between breathing and emotion/cognition, and (c) discusses theoretical and applied implications that point to new directions for research in the laboratory and clinic. Emphasis is placed on dyspnea/suffocation fear and the acquisition

Effect of dorsomedial hypothalamic nuclei knife cuts on ingestive behavior.

Previous findings show that rats with electrolytic or excitotoxic lesions in the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMN) are hypophagic and hypodipsic and have reduced ponderal and linear growth but normal body composition. DMN-lesioned (DMNL) rats also show altered ingestive responses to naloxone. The present study investigated the intrahypothalamic nerve pathways involved in these DMNL effects and the response of the pathways to deprivation challenges by placing knife cuts posterior (Post), lateral (Lat), ventral (Vent), dorsal, or anterior to the DMN or by administering sham operations. 5-HT2C receptor involvement in female rat lordosis behavior.

Adult, hormone-primed, ovariectomized rats (CDF-344) with bilateral implants within the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN), were injected with 0.5 microgram estradiol benzoate followed 48 h later with 500 microgram progesterone. This priming produced rats with 2 different levels of sexual receptivity. Rats with a lordosis to mount ratio (L/M)>/=0.5 were used to examine the potential lordosis-inhibiting effects of the 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, R(+)-a-(2, 3-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-[2(4-fluoro-phenylethyl)]-4-piperidine-methanol (MDL 100,907), and the 5-HT2C receptor antagonist, 5-methyl

Effects of prenatal morphine exposure on rat heterotypical sexual behavior.

Prenatal exposure to morphine inhibits ovarian steroid-dependent lordosis behavior in female rats, and enhances certain components of male sexual behavior in male rats. In the present study, the effects of mid to late gestational morphine exposure on male sexual behavior in females and on female sexual behavior in males were examined in adult offspring. Gonadectomized male rats were injected at weekly intervals with 30 or 60 microg estradiol benzoate and 1.0 mg progesterone and tested for female sexual behavior with stimulus males on 2 consecutive weekly tests.
