In recent decades, the number of lamellar keratoplasties (LKs) being performed worldwide has been gradually decreasing. However, new technical procedures have been developed and microsurgeons must consider modified indications for lamellar grafting. In the period 1946-1995, in the Department of Ophthalmology University Medical School of Debrecen, Hungary 3889 consecutive keratoplasties were performed of which 608 were LKs. We have designed two innovative surgical procedures using the Leeds-Keio artificial ligament to solve the difficult problems caused by the difference in physical properties between bone structure and spinal implants, such as pedicle screw systems, used for treating the unstable lumbar spine. The implantation of an orbital hydroxyapatite implant was complicated by conjunctival dehiscence, cutaneous fistula formation, and infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Pathologic examination of the sphere 2 years after its implantation revealed reduction in the size of the implant, peripheral lamellar bone formation and central necrosis. This is the first report of this constellation of complications with hydroxyapatite spheres positioned in the orbit. The 2-year interval between implantation and removal of the sphere is the longest reported in a case with histopathologic analysis.

The biologic compatibility of ceramic materials has been widely demonstrated, and alumina (Al2O3) has been used extensively in clinical applications for nearly 20 years. In many cases, evidently inert and nontoxic biomaterials may trigger procoagulant and inflammatory responses. Because most polymeric biomaterials accumulate a surface layer of protein immediately after implantation, these adverse reactions may stem from secondary interactions between the host and this surface layer of adsorbed proteins. Sixty-four women requesting first trimester termination of pregnancy were recruited into a comparative cohort study comparing the cervical ripening properties of a mechanical dilator (Lamicel; n = 17), prostaglandin, antiprogesterone and placebo control (n = 15), gemeprost; n = 17) and mifepristone; n = 15). The authors describe a new technique for treatment fractures of the dens. An anterior approach (technique of Boehler) is used. It provides for one-stage fusion and no additional disturbance of C1-C2 rotation. Under AP and lateral guidance the body of C2 is drilled medially, and so are the site of fracture. Then comes the gradual impaction of a conical implant of biocompatible resorbable implant [*], tip cephalad. The biopolymer is used for grafting purposes in all type of fractures of the odontoid process, which permits the latter to be fused without using screws or any other metal implant.

A new method is reported for chemically coating cross-linked albumin onto silicone rubber in an attempt to improve the blood compatibility of the material. Promising results were obtained in an evaluation using both vena cava and renal embolus antithrombogenicity tests ondogs.
