The immunological typing of cell populations in the skin biopsies of 20 cases of histologically proven lichen planus was done using monoclonal antibodies. The Avidin-Biotin-Complex immunoperoxidase technique was used. A predominance of T-helper/inducer cells in the dermal infiltrate was observed by a semiquantitative analysis. Plasma, erythrocyte and urinary selenium levels were determined in 21 sickle cell homozygote patients, 20 siblings with sickle cell traits, 29 parents and in 21 healthy controls with an HbAA pattern. Injuries to the thoracic and lumbar vertebral column are common. They are all the result of increased loading on structures with limited flexibility. The majority of these injuries are related to hyperflexion. Plain radiography remains the mainstay of diagnosis of vertebral injuries. We studied four patients (a mother, her two daughters, and her son) with bullous mastocytosis, or diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis, whose genetic inheritance suggested an autosomal dominant pattern. The magnetic resonance (MR) appearance of carotid body tumors has been previously described. Classically, these lesions are well circumscribed and highly vascular and cause a characteristic separation of the external and internal carotid arteries. The medical records of 64 patients with paraganglioma of the head and neck seen between 1954 and 1984 at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, were reviewed. Lesions were found in the carotid body (n = 24), jugulotympanic area (n = 37), vagal nerve (n = 4), and larynx (n = 1). A hereditary pattern was identified in six patients (9%). A case of malignant lymphoma with a helper activity of neoplastic cells is reported. On admission, a significant number of plasma cells of polyclonal nature were seen in the peripheral blood, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia was seen. The biopsied lymph node showed poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma with marked proliferation of plasma cells.
