MRI Surface-Based Brain Morphometry in Egyptian Autistic and Typically Developing Children.

OBJECTIVES: The verbal abilities of autistic children differ from those of typically developing ones and they also differ among autistic children themselves. Neuroanatomical changes and an abnormal organization of functional networks are expected to accompany such a neurodevelopmental disorder. The aim of this study was to delineate the brain neuroanatomical changes in Egyptian children with autism and to compare them with previous studies in order to add more insight into the global brain imaging deviations linked to autism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five autistic children and 25 typicall

Risk of dysphagia and speech and language delay in PHACE syndrome.

PHACE (posterior fossa, hemangioma, arterial lesions, cardiac, and eye) syndrome consists of infantile hemangiomas of the head and neck along with a spectrum of noncutaneous anomalies. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities have also been noted. Here we describe the association between PHACE syndrome and abnormalities in oropharyngeal development and coordination manifesting as dysphagia or speech and language delay. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 34 patients with PHACE syndrome. Data were collected from prior clinical notes and radiographic studies and the results of a comprehensive

How should children with speech sound disorders be classified? A review and critical evaluation of current classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) form a heterogeneous group who differ in terms of the severity of their condition, underlying cause, speech errors, involvement of other aspects of the linguistic system and treatment response. To date there is no universal and agreed-upon classification system. Instead, a number of theoretically differing classification systems have been proposed based on either an aetiological (medical) approach, a descriptive-linguistic approach or a processing approach. AIMS: To describe and review the supporting evidence, and to provide a critical ev

A model of educational resource use by children with cochlear implants.

We have tracked patterns of use of educational and rehabilitative resources as part of an initial assessment of cost-benefit ratios of cochlear implants in children. Forty-two children with cochlear implants in the Listening Center at Johns Hopkins program of aural rehabilitation have served as our study cohort to develop the measures to be assessed. An educational resource matrix stratifies school setting (residential vs special education vs non-specialized "mainstream" setting) and levels of rehabilitative support (speech and language therapy and interpreter use) to map past and current use

Randomized controlled trial comparing Parent Led Therapist Supervised Articulation Therapy (PLAT) with routine intervention for children with speech disorders associated with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: A total of 68% of pre-school children with cleft palate have speech problems requiring speech therapy. There is a lack of access to regular targeted therapy. Parent training leads to positive outcomes in early communication skills in cleft palate and non-cleft speech disorders. Connected health has been used to address inadequate access to therapy, providing intervention to those who would not otherwise receive therapy. AIMS: To evaluate the speech, activity and participation outcomes of Parent Led, Therapist Supervised, Articulation Therapy (PLAT) compared with routine speech the

Long-term survival of children born with congenital anomalies: A systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies.

BACKGROUND: Following a reduction in global child mortality due to communicable diseases, the relative contribution of congenital anomalies to child mortality is increasing. Although infant survival of children born with congenital anomalies has improved for many anomaly types in recent decades, there is less evidence on survival beyond infancy. We aimed to systematically review, summarise, and quantify the existing population-based data on long-term survival of individuals born with specific major congenital anomalies and examine the factors associated with survival. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Se

Study of Intraventricular Cerliponase Alfa for CLN2 Disease.

BACKGROUND: Recombinant human tripeptidyl peptidase 1 (cerliponase alfa) is an enzyme-replacement therapy that has been developed to treat neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2) disease, a rare lysosomal disorder that causes progressive dementia in children. METHODS: In a multicenter, open-label study, we evaluated the effect of intraventricular infusion of cerliponase alfa every 2 weeks in children with CLN2 disease who were between the ages of 3 and 16 years. Treatment was initiated at a dose of 30 mg, 100 mg, or 300 mg; all the patients then received the 300-mg dose for at least 96 w

Expanding the clinical picture of the MECP2 Duplication syndrome.

Individuals with two or more copies of the MECP2 gene, located at Xq28, share clinical features and a distinct facial phenotype known as MECP2 Duplication syndrome. We have examined perinatal characteristics, early childhood development and medical co-morbidities in this disorder. The International Rett Syndrome Phenotype Database (InterRett), which collects information from caregivers and clinicians on individuals with Rett syndrome and MECP2 associated disorders, was used as the data source. Data were available on 56 cases (49 males and 7 females) with MECP2 Duplication syndrome. Median age

Significant regional differences in Denmark in outcome after cochlear implants in children.

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of the present study were to study regional differences in outcome for a paediatric cochlear implant (CI) population after the introduction of universal neonatal hearing screening (UNHS) and bilateral implantation in Denmark. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data relate to 94 subjects. A test battery consisting of eight different tests/assessments was performed in order to report the level of audition, speech, language and self-esteem. For data analyses of any associations between the regions, Fisher's exact test was used. Potential rater variability within either of the cen

22q13.3 deletion syndrome: clinical and molecular analysis using array CGH.

The 22q13.3 deletion syndrome results from loss of terminal segments of varying sizes at 22qter. Few genotype-phenotype correlations have been found but all patients have mental retardation and severe delay, or absence of, expressive speech. We carried out clinical and molecular characterization of 13 patients. Developmental delay and speech abnormalities were common to all and comparable in frequency and severity to previously reported cases. Array-based comparative genomic hybridization showed the deletions to vary from 95 kb to 8.5 Mb. We also carried out high-resolution 244K array comparat

A survey of augmentative and alternative communication service provision in Hong Kong.

A survey was conducted to understand the service provisions for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in Hong Kong. The response rates of special pre-school training centers and special schools were 59% and 71%, respectively. The response rate of adult settings was 18%. Results indicated that a higher proportion of students identified as having complex communication needs had access to AAC service provision in schools for children with intellectual and physical disabilities than those in special pre-school training centres and other types of special schools. Generalization of AAC se

Dysmorphic features, simplified gyral pattern and 7q11.23 duplication reciprocal to the Williams-Beuren deletion.

We report a patient with mild pachygyria, ascertained during a screening of subjects with abnormal neuronal migration and/or epilepsy, having a 7q11.23 duplication reciprocal to the Williams-Beuren critical region (WBCR) deletion. He exhibited speech delay and mental retardation together to type II trigonocephaly and other abnormalities. The proband's mother carried the same imbalance, though her phenotype was milder and no abnormal conformation of the cranium was reported. She had suffered a few seizures in infancy, as already described in other duplicated subjects. This genomic imbalance, no

High risk of reading disability and speech sound disorder in rolandic epilepsy families: case-control study.

PURPOSE: Associations between rolandic epilepsy (RE) with reading disability (RD) and speech sound disorder (SSD) have not been tested in a controlled study. We conducted a case-control study to determine whether (1) RD and SSD odds are higher in RE probands than controls and (2) an RE proband predicts a family member with RD or SSD, hence suggesting a shared genetic etiology for RE, RD, and SSD. METHODS: Unmatched case-control study with 55 stringently defined RE cases, 150 controls in the same age range lacking a primary brain disorder diagnosis, and their siblings and parents. Odds ratios

Neurocognitive profiles in Salla disease.

Salla disease, a free sialic acid storage disorder, is one of the 36 currently known disorders in Finland that form the Finnish disease heritage. Salla disease leads to learning disability* with a wide clinical variation. Two main categories of the disease have been classified: a conventional subtype and a severe subtype with more severe defects. We present detailed neurocognitive profiles of 41 Finnish patients with Salla disease (19 females, 22 males; age range 11mo to 63y, median 19y). The neurocognitive development of patients with Salla disease was assessed by psychological and neuropsych

A systematic review of early speech interventions for children with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L) are at high risk of problems with early speech sound production, and these difficulties can persist into later childhood. Early intervention could help to reduce the number of children whose problems become persistent. However, much research in the field to date has focused on older children. There is a need to determine if providing intervention during the phase of early typical speech development leads to better outcomes. AIMS: To review the evidence for the effectiveness of interventions targeting speech, delivered in

Timing anticipation in adults and children with Developmental Dyslexia: evidence of an inefficient mechanism.

Developmental Dyslexia (DD) is a learning disorder characterized by specific difficulties in learning to read accurately and fluently, which has been generally explained in terms of phonological deficits. Recent research has shown that individuals with DD experience timing difficulties in the domains of language, music perception and motor control, probably due to impaired rhythmic perception, suggesting that timing deficit might be a key underlying factor to explain such a variety of difficulties. The present work presents two experiments aimed at assessing the anticipatory ability on a given
