Local weak hydrogen bonds induced dipole-dipole interactions in polymer for enhancing photocatalytic oxidation.

Functionalizing organic polymers is an effective strategy for enhancing their photocatalytic performance. However, this approach is currently limited by specific motifs, complex preparation methods, and an unclear electron transfer mechanism. Here, we present a meticulously designed structure of perylene diimide connected with poly (barbituric acid trimer) through self-assembled hydrogen bonding. In particular, the local chemical environment of the two components is adjusted by hydrogen bond-induced dipole-dipole interactions, leading to the emergence of a significant inherent electric field.

Macroscale, humidity-insensitive, and stable structural superlubricity achieved with hydrogen-free graphene nanoflakes.

Achieving solid superlubricity in high-humidity environments is of great practical importance yet remains challenging nowadays, due to the complex physicochemical roles of water and concomitant oxidation on solid surfaces. Here we report a facile way to access humidity-insensitive solid superlubricity (coefficient of friction 0.0035) without detectable wear and running-in at a humidity range of 2-80%. Inspired by the concept of structural superlubricity, this is achieved between Au-capped microscale graphite flake and graphene nanoflake-covered hydrogen-free amorphous carbon (GNC a-C). Such GN

The power of gibbon songs: Going beyond the research to inform conservation actions.

Gibbons (Hylobatidae) are the smallest of the apes, known for their arboreal behavior and stereotyped songs. These species and sex-specific songs are often the subject of detailed studies regarding their evolution, responses to changing environments, involvement in social behavior, and used to design vocalization-based survey techniques to monitor population densities and trends. What is poorly understood is the value and impact of using the science and sound of gibbon vocalization and gibbon stories in education and outreach to complement nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) efforts. We prese

A Wearable Fingertip Force Feedback Device System for Object Stiffness Sensing.

Virtual reality technology brings a new experience to human-computer interaction, while wearable force feedback devices can enhance the immersion of users in interaction. This paper proposes a wearable fingertip force feedback device that uses a tendon drive mechanism, with the aim of simulating the stiffness characteristics of objects within virtual scenes. The device adjusts the rotation angle of the torsion spring through a DC motor, and then uses a wire to convert the torque into a feedback force at the user's index fingertips, with an output force of up to 4 N and a force change rate of u

Highly selective fluorescence turn-on sensor for·thiol compounds detection.

As a kind of commonly-used synthetic materials for many pesticides, thiol compounds, once being leaked, can cause serious harm to the environment and humans. Therefore, the efficient detection of thiol compounds is essential. In this study developed a turn-on fluorescent probe (Cu@Zn-CP) for the highly sensitive fluorescence detection of thiol compounds. The probe was constructed based on a zinc coordination polymer (Zn-CP), whose fluorescence was quenched through the effective doping of Cu2+ ions. After the introduction of methyl thioglycolate (MTC), a rapid fluorescence turn-on response was

4D Printed Non-Euclidean-Plate Jellyfish Inspired Soft Robot in Diverse Organic Solvents.

Soft robots have the potential to assist and complement human exploration of extreme and harsh environments (i.e., organic solvents). However, soft robots with stable performance in diverse organic solvents are not developed yet. In the current research, a non-Euclidean-plate under-liquid soft robot inspired by jellyfish based on phototropic liquid crystal elastomers is fabricated via a 4D-programmable strategy. Specifically, the robot employs a 3D-printed non-Euclidean-plate, designed with Archimedean orientation, which undergoes autonomous deformation to release internal stress when immersed

On the Physiology of the Sensory-Collapse Test.

The sensory-collapse test (formerly the scratch-collapse test) is a physical examination finding describing a momentary inhibition of external shoulder rotation following light stimulation of an injured nerve in the ipsilateral limb. Similar to other physical examination tests designed to interrogate nerve compression, such as the Phalen or Tinel tests, its test characteristics demonstrate variation. There remains speculation about the test's existence and anatomic basis. The literature of mammalian reflex physiology was reviewed with an emphasis on the sensory pathways from the upper extremit

A Suspended, 3D Morphing Sensory System for Robots to Feel and Protect.

Artificial sensory systems with synergistic touch and pain perception hold substantial promise for environment interaction and human-robot communication. However, the realization of biological skin-like functional integration of sensors with sensitive touch and pain perception still remains a challenge. Here, a concept is proposed of suspended electronic skins enabling 3D deformation-mechanical contact interactions for achieving synergetic ultrasensitive touch and adjustable pain perception. The suspended sensory system can sensitively capture tiny touch stimuli as low as 0.02 Pa and actively

A neuromorphic dataset for tabletop object segmentation in indoor cluttered environment.

Event-based cameras are commonly leveraged to mitigate issues such as motion blur, low dynamic range, and limited time sampling, which plague conventional cameras. However, a lack of dedicated event-based datasets for benchmarking segmentation algorithms, especially those offering critical depth information for occluded scenes, has been observed. In response, this paper introduces a novel Event-based Segmentation Dataset (ESD), a high-quality event 3D spatial-temporal dataset designed for indoor object segmentation within cluttered environments. ESD encompasses 145 sequences featuring 14,166 m

How Can I Help You? The Influence of Situation and Hostile Sexism on Perception of Appropriate Gender of Conversational Agents.

Conversational agents (CAs) are increasingly being developed on commercial websites nowadays. We tested in two studies whether gender stereotypes apply to non-gendered CAs. In the first study, participants evaluated whether CAs are expected to display more masculine or feminine characteristics in situations designed to be stereotypically male or female. The sexist attitudes of the respondents were also measured. As predicted, participants perceived that a CA should be more masculine in stereotypically male situations and more feminine in stereotypically female situations. Moreover, we found th

Perpetuating the Gaps: 21st-Century Skills in Students With Learning Disabilities and Their Typically Developing Peers.

This study examined whether there are differences between Israeli students with learning disabilities (LD) and their typically developing peers with regard to their 21st-century skills according to their self-report and whether the differences between the two groups are greater in postsecondary education than in high school-an aim that had not been examined in depth in previous research. Findings suggest that overall (beyond type of learner), in most skills, postsecondary education students reported higher scores than high school students on questionnaires designed for self-assessment of 21st-

Differential specificity of SARS-CoV-2 main protease variants on peptide versus protein-based substrates.

The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro ) holds significant importance as a biological target in combating coronaviruses due to its importance in virus replication. Considering the emergence of novel SARS-CoV-2 variants and the mutations observed in the Mpro sequence, we hypothesized that these mutations may have a potential impact on the protease's specificity. To test this, we expressed Mpro corresponding to the original strain and variants Beta1, Beta2, and Omicron and analyzed their activity on protein-based and peptide substrates. Although we observed differential activity on the protein-based

All-natural environmentally degradable poly (butylene terephthalate-co-caprolactone): A theoretical and experimental study of its degradation properties and mechanisms.

The design and production of materials with excellent mechanical properties and biodegradability face significant challenges. Poly (butylene terephthalate-co-caprolactone) copolyesters (PBTCL) is obtained by modifying the engineering plastic polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) with a simple one-pot process using readily biodegradable ε-caprolactone (ε-CL). The material has mechanical properties comparable to those of commercial biodegradable copolyester PBAT. Besides, this copolyester exhibited remarkable degradability in natural environments such as soil and ocean, for example, PBTCL1.91 lost >4

Protonated carbon nitride for rapid photocatalytic sterilization via synergistic oxidative damage and physical destruction.

Photocatalytic disinfection is an eco-friendly strategy for countering bacterial pollution in aquatic environments. Numerous strategies have been devised to facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within photocatalysts, ultimately leading to the eradication of bacteria. However, the significance of the physical morphology of photocatalysts in the context of sterilization is frequently obscured, and the progress in the development of physical-chemical synergistic sterilization photocatalysts has been relatively limited. Herein, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is chemically

Seasonality of brain function: role in psychiatric disorders.

Seasonality patterns are reported in various psychiatric disorders. The current paper summarizes findings on brain adaptations associated with seasonal changes, factors that contribute to individual differences and their implications for psychiatric disorders. Changes in circadian rhythms are likely to prominently mediate these seasonal effects since light strongly entrains the internal clock modifying brain function. Inability of circadian rhythms to accommodate to seasonal changes might increase the risk for mood and behavior problems as well as worse clinical outcomes in psychiatric disorde

Facilitating the Molecular Diagnosis of Rare Genetic Disorders Through Facial Phenotypic Scores.

With recent advances in computer vision, many applications based on artificial intelligence have been developed to facilitate the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders through the analysis of patients' two-dimensional frontal images. Some of these have been implemented on online platforms with user-friendly interfaces and provide facial analysis services, such as Face2Gene. However, users cannot run the facial analysis processes in house because the training data and the trained models are unavailable. This article therefore provides an introduction, designed for users with programming backgroun
