Behavioral stress modifies hippocampal plasticity through N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor activation.

Behavioral stress has detrimental effects on subsequent cognitive performance in many species, including humans. For example, humans exposed to stressful situations typically exhibit marked deficits in various learning and memory tasks. However, the underlying neural mechanisms by which stress exerts its effects on learning and memory are unknown. We now report that in adult male rats, stress (i.e., restraint plus tailshock) impairs long-term potentiation (LTP) but enhances long-term depression (LTD) in the CA1 area of the hippocampus, a structure implicated in learning and memory processes. Determinants of compliance with iron supplementation: supplies, side effects, or psychology?

Iron deficiency anemia affects over 2 billion people. Particularly at risk are pregnant women and young children. Although distribution of iron supplements is practised in many antenatal care programs in developing countries, it has often been alleged that pregnant women do not take them. Poor compliance arises not only because of patient behavior but also from factors out of the patient's control. This paper presents the results of a review of the literature on medical compliance to determine whether iron supplementation is different from other medications, to assess the known levels of compl

Association of sporadic listeriosis with consumption of uncooked hot dogs and undercooked chicken.

In 1986-87 the Centers for Disease Control conducted an active population-based survey of Listeria monocytogenes infections in six regions of the United States. Listeriosis was reported in 154 patients: one-third of cases were perinatal and the remaining two-thirds occurred in the elderly and immunosuppressed. 28% of cases were fatal. 82 cases and 239 controls matched for age and underlying disease were enrolled in a study of risk factors for listeriosis. Cases were significantly more likely than controls to have eaten uncooked hot dogs or undercooked chicken, with 20% of the overall risk of l

Developmental neuropsychiatry: concepts, issues and prospects.

The empirical findings on the cognitive and behavioral sequelae of head injury in childhood are integrated with others in the literature in order to consider some of the outstanding issues and dilemmas that remain in the field of developmental neuropsychiatry. Particular attention is paid to the apparent nonspecificity of the cognitive sequelae of localized brain lesions in childhood, possible specificities in brain-behavior relationships, the probable importance of age effects in altering the impact of brain lesions, and the threshold above which brain injury may have persistent psychological

Dietary adequacy, feeding practices, and eating behavior of children with Down's syndrome.

The dietary adequacy, eating behavior, and feeding practices of children with Down's syndrome were studied. Half of the children obtained from their food less than the recommended allowances for food energy, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and thiamin; children under six were vulnerable to iron inadequacies. Three-fourths of the children exceeded the allowances for protein and ascorbic acid. Contrary to the belief that parents of handicapped children are permissive, parents seemed to control the food consumption patterns of their children by appropriate techniques. Weight status appeared to be compa

[Follow-up study of school age children having received inpatient treatment for infant atrophy, with regard to their personality development and social adjustment].

In the personality development controlled by complicated and numerous influences we searched for those characteristics which can be made responsible for infantile atrophy. In comparison with children of average development and of the same age we found that in addition to a somatic retardation the intellectual efficiency is impaired in 60 percent of the cases; we were also able to find disorders of the emotional circle. All of these result in the disharmony of personality. In the capacities for adaptation the narrow, familial, environmental influences appear to be of importance in that in contr

A heritable profile of six miRNAs in autistic patients and mouse models.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental pathologies that impair social communication and cause repetitive behaviors. The suggested roles of noncoding RNAs in pathology led us to perform a comparative analysis of the microRNAs expressed in the serum of human ASD patients. The analysis of a cohort of 45 children with ASD revealed that six microRNAs (miR-19a-3p, miR-361-5p, miR-3613-3p, miR-150-5p, miR-126-3p, and miR-499a-5p) were expressed at low to very low levels compared to those in healthy controls. A similar but less pronounced decrease was registered in the clinically u

Mental health antecedents of early midlife insomnia: evidence from a four-decade longitudinal study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition that constitutes a major public health and economic burden. However, little is known about the developmental etiology of adulthood insomnia. DESIGN: We examined whether indicators of psychological vulnerability across multiple developmental periods (psychiatric diagnoses in young adulthood and adolescence, childhood behavioral problems, and familial psychiatric history) predicted subsequent insomnia in adulthood. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from the ongoing Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a populati

Human morality and temperament.

This chapter has tried to make two points. First, the concept of morality refers to a developmental cascade of phenomena whose essential features are (a) inhibition of punished acts; (b) a representation of prohibited actions; (c) the emotions of uncertainty, empathy, shame, and guilt; (d) the semantic concepts of good and bad; (e) accepting the moral obligations of social categories; and (f) the concepts of fairness and the ideal. The inhibition of prohibited actions and the cognitive representation of prohibited behaviors, as well as the affect states that follow violations, appear by the en

Regional white matter development in very preterm infants: perinatal predictors and early developmental outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at risk for white matter (WM) injury and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. METHODS: Serial diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from very preterm infants (N = 78) born <30 wk gestation imaged up to four times from 26-42 wk postmenstrual age. Slopes were calculated for fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) within regions of interest for infants with ≥2 scans (N = 50). Sixty-five children underwent neurodevelopmental testing at 2 y of age. RESULTS: FA slope for the posterior limb of the internal capsule was greater tha

Early postoperative systemic inflammatory response is an important determinant for adverse 2-year neurodevelopment-associated outcomes after the Norwood procedure.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between early postoperative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a marker of systemic inflammatory response, and 2-year neurodevelopment-associated outcomes among survivors after undergoing the Norwood procedure. METHODS: Among 53 neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome undergoing the Norwood procedure during 2003-2009, CRP was measured in 43 patients twice weekly within postoperative day 20. Two-year cognition, language, and motor scores were assessed with Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III in 26 patients (9 deaths

The quality of preterm infants' spontaneous movements: an early indicator of intelligence and behaviour at school age.

BACKGROUND: The quality of very preterm infants' spontaneous movements at 11 to 16 weeks post-term age is a powerful predictor of their later neurological status. This study investigated whether early spontaneous movements also have predictive value for the intellectual and behavioural problems that children born very preterm often experience. METHODS: Spontaneous movement quality was assessed, using Prechtl's method, at 11 to 16 weeks post-term in 65 infants born at <or= 33 weeks of gestation in a single centre. Intelligence and behaviour were assessed with standardised tests at 7 to 11 year

Assessing Pediatric Sedation Using Patient-Centered Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pediatric dental sedation success using patient-centered outcomes overall and for behavior, safety, and treatment. METHODS: A cross-sectional study used existing clinical data of children 24 to 60 months of age undergoing first-time sedations (2015-2020) at a children's hospital. Outcomes included behavior success (Frankl score 3-4), safety success (vital signs maintained within 2 SDs of age- and sex-based norms), and treatment success. Overall success was defined as success in at least 2 subcategories. Descriptive statistics, bivariate comparisons, and multiple variabl

Associations between maternal child maltreatment predict their child's health service use? Results from the I-CALM study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) is associated with lifelong adverse outcomes but less is known about its intergenerational consequences. As these consequences often manifest as poor health, examining health service use provides an objective measure of clinically significant morbidity and healthcare burden in children. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether maternal CM history predicted offspring health service utilisation using an intergenerational dataset. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Multigenerational retrospective cohort study. METHODS: We analysed data from the Intergenerational Childhood
