Molecular phylogeny and ecological diversity of endolichenic fungi inhabiting Acarospora schleicheri (Ach.) A. Massal, isolated from a Chilean Andean zone.

High-altitude ecosystems in the Andes present diverse extreme environmental conditions, yet the fungal biodiversity associated with crustose lichens remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the culturable fraction of the Endolichenic Fungi (ELF) community associated with the lichen Acarospora schleicheri (Ach.) A. Massal, collected from the Chilean Altiplano. Using culture-dependent techniques, fungal strains were isolated and identified through macro- and micro-morphological characterization combined with molecular phylogenetics of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Graham-Little Piccardi Lassueur syndrome and review of the literature.

Graham-Little Piccardi Lassueur Syndrome (GLPLS) is a rare variant of lichen planopilaris (LPP) which characterized by triad of fibrosing alopecia of the scalp, non-fibrosing alopecia of the axilla and groin, and a follicular spinous papule over the body. LPP is a rare follicular subtype of lichen planus which causes scarring alopecia of scalp, and there are three clinical subtypes of LPP including classic lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and GLPLS. Herein, we describe an adult dark-skinned Saudi male with GLPLS who has numerous body follicular papules, complete loss of axillar

Immune cell subsets in interface cutaneous immune-related adverse events associated with anti-PD-1 therapy resemble acute graft versus host disease more than lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: Checkpoint immunotherapy is frequently associated with cutaneous immune-related adverse events (cirAEs), and among those, the most common subtype shows interface reaction patterns that have been likened to lichen planus (LP); however, cutaneous acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) may be a closer histopathologic comparator. We used quantitative pathology to compare the immunologic composition of anti-PD-1-associated interface reactions to LP and aGVHD to assess for similarities and differences between these cutaneous eruptions. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry for CD4, CD8, CD68,

Clinical Evaluation of Dexamethasone Plus Gentamycin Mouthwash Use in Combination with Total Glucosides of Paeony for Treatment of Oral Lichen Planus without Fungal Infection: A Comparative Study with Long-Term Follow-Up.

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa and considered a potential malignant disease, for which a method for complete cure is lacking. The dexamethasone and gentamicin mouthwash, combined with total glucosides of paeony (TGP), was tested in the treatment of OLP patients without fungal infection, with a view to provide evidence that may assist in resolving the dilemma. Methods: A randomized and single-blind clinical trial of 48 non-erosive and erosive OLP patients was conducted, with the patients divided into two groups. Group A was treat

Oral lichen planus and other confounding factors in narrow band imaging (NBI) during routine inspection of oral cavity for early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma: a retrospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Narrow Band Imaging is a noninvasive optical diagnostic tool. It allows the visualization of sub-mucosal vasculature; four patterns of shapes of submucosal capillaries can be recognized, increasingly associated with neoplastic transformation. With such characteristics, it has showed high effectiveness for detection of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Still, scientific literature highlights several bias/confounding factors, such as Oral Lichen Planus. We performed a retrospective observational study on patients routinely examined with Narrow Band Imaging, investigating for bias, confou

Histopathologic study of thin vulvar squamous cell carcinomas and associated cutaneous lesions: a correlative study of 48 tumors in 44 patients with analysis of adjacent vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia types and lichen sclerosus.

A series of 48 excised thin (<or=5 mm in tumor thickness) invasive squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the vulva in 44 patients were studied to determine the interrelationships of tumor type with type of adjacent vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) and lichen sclerosus. The SCCs were of conventional keratinizing type in 38 tumors (79%), warty type in 6 (13%), and basaloid type in 4 (8%). VIN adjacent to SCC was found in 37 (77%) of the tumors. Of these, 19 were classic VIN (51%) and 18 were simplex (differentiated) VIN (49%). All 10 warty and basaloid SCCs had adjacent classic VIN. Of the 38

Hyperkeratotic pitted plaques on the palms and soles.

Lichen planus (LP) and lichen nitidus (LN) present with varied morphology on the palms and soles. We present four unusual cases of palmoplantar LP and LN manifesting as hyperkeratotic plaques with pits. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically. Subtle features like presence of violaceous border suggests LP and plugs within the pits suggest LN.

Diagnosis and Management of Vulvar Skin Disorders: ACOG Practice Bulletin Summary, Number 224.

Vulvar skin disorders include a variety of inflammatory conditions of the vulva that also may affect the extragenital area. Pruritus and pain are two of the most common presenting symptoms in vulvar clinics (). Vulvovaginal symptoms often are chronic and can adversely affect sexual function and sense of well-being. The purpose of this Practice Bulletin is to provide updated diagnostic and management recommendations for the most common vulvar skin conditions associated with inflammation: contact dermatitis, lichen simplex chronicus, lichen sclerosus, and lichen planus. Other vulvovaginal disord

Oral treatment of keratinizing disorders of skin and mucous membranes with etretinate. Comparative study of 113 patients.

This study reports comparative results of the effects of an aromatic retinoid, etretinate (RO 10-9359), on various disorders of the skin and mucous membranes. One hundred thirteen patients suffering from psoriasis, lichen planus, keratosis follicularis, and various other disorders were treated and examined. The patients received 25 to 100 mg/day of oral etretinate for up to 30 months. Patients with erythrodermic psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and keratosis follicularis showed the best response. The conditions of patients with psoriasis vulgaris, palmoplantar psoriasis, and lichen planus also i

[Perineal verrucous lesions].

Verrucous lichen planus (VLP), is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis mainly involving the lower limbs. It rarely affects the perineal area, where it occurs in association with other mucocutaneous lichen lesions. We here report the case of a 51-year old patient with isolated perineal verrucous lichen planus. The patient, who had no significant medical history, presented with painless, verrucous, slightly itchy lesions in the perineal area that had gradually increased in volume over the past 8 years. Clinical examination revealed the presence of multiple firm grayish budding lesions with a rough

Perineostomy: the last oportunity.

OBJECTIVE: To review the technique and outcome of perineal urethrostomy or urethral perineostomy and to identify factors related to the procedure failure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 17 patients who underwent perineal urethrostomy between 2009-2013 in a single hospital. Success was defined as no need for additional surgical treatment or urethral dilatation. We reviewed the clinical data related to age, weight, previous urethral surgery, diabetes, hypertension, ischemic cardiopathy, lichen sclerosus and other causes and studied their association with the procedure failure (univariate anal

POLYPHARMACY, DRUG RELATED NITROSAMINE CONTAMINATION (BISOPROLOL/PROPAFENONE) AND THE LINK TO LICHEN PLANUS/SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF KERATINOCYTE AND MUCOSAL CANCER/ORAL LEUKOPLAKIA: PRESENTATION OF THE FIRST CASE AND UPDATE ON THE NEW PATHOGENETIC VISION.

The association between drug-induced lichen planus - whether oral/mucosal or solely cutaneous - involves a diverse range of drugs, including ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and beta blockers, as well as quinidine, NSAIDs, hydroxychloroquine, antiretroviral medications for HIV, penicillamine, TNF inhibitors, and certain medications for type 2 diabetes. The natural course of lichen planus has been also linked in certain cases to the development of squamous cell carcinoma, affecting both mucous membranes and skin, as extensively documented in the literature. However, little attention has been given to

Dermoscopic Features of Non-Infectious Balanoposthitis.

Background/Objectives: Balanoposthitis encompasses a variety of non-infectious conditions that, in some cases, are risk factors for penile cancer. Clinical signs of non-infectious balanoposthitis are often unspecific, whereas dermoscopic features of dermatoses in the genital area can be altered. Current knowledge of the dermoscopy of balanoposthitis is incomplete. This study aimed to evaluate the dermoscopic features of non-infectious balanoposthitis and correlate these features with distinct balanoposthitis types. Methods: Patients with histopathologically confirmed non-infectious balanoposth

Immunohistochemical differences between normal and chronically inflamed conjunctiva: diagnostic features.

PURPOSE: There is widespread misinterpretation of normal conjunctival fibrinogen. In differentiating between normal conjunctiva and cicatrizing conjunctivitis, including ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and lichen planus, it is important to properly evaluate and characterize the histologic appearance of the structures seen and not base a diagnosis on just the presence or absence of certain features. One feature of conjunctival histology prone to misinterpretation and misdiagnosis is the presence of subepithelial fibrinogen, particularly when the diagnosis of lichen p

Intraepidermal nerve fiber expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide, vasoactive intestinal peptide and substance P in psoriasis.

In order to evaluate more fully the role of neuropeptides in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, skin biopsies were obtained from 36 patients with psoriasis to identify substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Lesional and nonlesional skin was examined from these biopsies and the results compared with those from biopsies taken from patients with a variety of other inflammatory dermatoses, including lichen planus, lichen simplex chronicus, spongiotic dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Also studied was a series of nine biopsies taken from p

New and emerging therapies for lichenoid dermatoses.

Lichenoid dermatoses comprise a significant proportion of dermatologic conditions. The pathophysiologic mechanisms are unclear for many such dermatoses making treatment difficult. Ongoing research into these mechanisms is allowing more directed intervention possible. This article describes some of the recent experiences in the therapy of lichen planus, lichen nitidus, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and graft versus host disease.
